I usually park in public grass lots so this was my first time buying parking in G6. Is it customary for people in the pay lots to show up an hour before and expect to get a spot?

We got there around 2:30 for tailgating, around 530 or so there's numerous people just coming in trying to squeeze in between some cars that had already been there all afternoon.
I mean yeah some people have other things going on, which is why they show up an hour before the game. We've had to do it twice this year because of our kids soccer. People also park like total assh0les so there's that aspect too.

Well, they've paid for a spot in that donor lot, so yes -- they can show up whenever they'd like and expect a spot to be available.

If they had to squeeze in between cars to find space then that's on (a) whoever is directing parking and (b) people who feel the need to spread out and take more space than they should.
The parking attendants are something else...

Got scanned in and lot number applied to the window like usual, drove in aways when I had one of the “cammo dudes” jump in front of my car and try to tell me I wasn’t “checked in”, which of course I had been. I told the kid I was and said look at the giant “B4” on my windshield. Gomer still didn’t believe me so I got out of the car and ran down the girl who was scanning in permits and she got him straightened out. I don’t know who is supervising these junior ROTC kids but they need to get on the ball or get lost.

Yeah they seem to do more harm than good, just messing up all of the parking and sending people over and over into areas that are full.
