I think you were supposed to think it was a countdown to lily saying she's pregnant. Up to and including Lily getting out of the cab, so you get hit with a sack of bricks when she says his dad died.

There were also a few instances of Marshall and his dad not connecting, right? Something like "Oh, I'll just tell him later", and/or not answering a call. Those, plus the countdown, tripped it for me.

That death was so brutal and gruesome I quickly lost interest in the show after that. Maybe made it one more season.
Same with me, one more season to be exact. I was never sure if the story lines were becoming too far fetched by then, or if it was that gruesome murder of Glenn, but that moment was kind of the breaking point for me. I watched til the end of the following season I believe, where the protagonist group finally get the best of Negan. I think I tried to dip in and out of maybe one more season after, but it was no longer appointment TV as my interest had waned.

Negan was a great character FWIW, I think Jeffrey Dean Morgan played the role really well too. I don't blame him/the character for ruining the series. If nothing else, Negan, the villain, kept me around as long as possible after he savagely murdered Glenn.

Henry Blake was a shock. We didn't have the internet or inside info.

He was a loveable character and then.....dead. (Which is what I assume will be said about me when I slip the surly bonds of earth)

The backlash was so big that he did a guest skit on Cher's show about a month or so later.

Dr. Mark Green's death on ER was pretty bad even though you saw it coming

This one hits even harder once you have kids. A conversation recently led me to youtube that episode and watching him connect with his daughter, learn to accept his fate and be positive is something else. I will forever associate Over the Rainbow with that scene.

Screech in Saved by the Bell reboot

Hear me out.

In season one they mention he lives on the International Space Station, just to kill any possibility he could show up on the show. I mean they launched his @$$ into space.

Then the actor dies and in season two there’s a show where they all just talk about him but give no details about how he died.

They killed him, had an episode about it, and simultaneously refused to have him in the show or give any detail about how he died. I mean he’s already in space, give him a heroic astronaut rocket accident or don’t address it all.

Andrea getting killed by the gang when Jesse tries to escape in Season 5 of Breaking Bad.

Also Nacho sacrificing himself in Better Call Saul

She’s a very rare purely good genuine adult character in that season. Probably her and maybe hank/Gomez but even hank is flawed.

Testifying
After seeing some Sons of Anarchy posts, there were a lot of sad deaths on that show.
