Did ISU kill another promising coaching career?

No Campbell did it to himself.

Campbell was the one that didn't think he needed to replace Joe Houston as Special Teams coach following 2018 season. Houston went to Alabama and then Patriots where he is currently. Not having a ST coach has coast us a ton of games 2019 to present.

Campbell also didn't replace other quality assistants that left:
Alex Golesh was the Recruiting Coordinator/ TE coach, now OC at Tenn.

Jim Hofher was Passing Game Coordinator through 2017 and was replaced by Joel Gordon (disaster). Hofher is currently the Director of Advance Scouting at LSU.

Not to mention look at the Stadium, Crowd support and the facilities. Jon Heacock hasn't had a problem plugging in new talent to keep the D rolling. Why have the Offense (this yr) and Special Teams (since 2019) been in a complete tail spin?

One thing I see posted is a lot is our record breaking recruiting and I want to put something in perspective. Not to be a pessimist because I think we're trending in the right direction, but because it's talked about as being a huge reason to be optimistic.

Recruiting rankings:

2020 was 48 with a transfer rank of 131.
2021 was 60 with a transfer rank of 76.
2022 was 50 with a transfer rank of 111.
2023 is currently 33 with a transfer rank of 91.

2023 currently ranks 7th in the Big 12 but is closer to 9th than 6th. We have only one player in the Top 600. Only 2 offensive linemen and no running backs.

Some promising kids but we have a long ways to go to say recruiting is "great".

With that said, we really need to hope we can keep developing Norton, Noel, Sanders, Gaines, Essex, Dean, etc. They're the ones that are going to determine how quick this rebuild happens.

Campbell has basically undone all the progress made since he was hired this year. We’re starting 0-9 in the face and in a conference that’s going to lose its two premier programs.

Thank god for TJ.
And I don’t think 0-9 is a normal part of a rebuild. Very alarming if that happens, which I have a hard time not seeing that at this point.

Hop in a time machine to 2019. Find a way to get Golesh the offensive coordinator and don't bring Manning back.

Yes, having the speed at UCF and now Tennessee helps him as the offensive coordinator but my god, his play calling and offense at Tennessee is fun to watch. We had him til 2019 when Manning returned and Golesh left at the end of the year to go to UCF.

Now, maybe that is a coincidence but seeing that he took an OC job, clearly I think he felt he was ready and after what he did for Tight ends up from 2016-19 with Kolar, Dylan and Allen - man do I wish he was back here

This times one million.

Now go back and do 16, 17, 18, 19 etc when Golesh was here. And I don't care about rank the guys in those classes built what CMC built here. It was a struggle to replace what Golesh started here

We have a STUD QB currently committed. Other than that we’re still going to lack talent at WR, OL, and TE. Our RB room doesn’t have nearly the depth people think. Defense has some promising talent if it doesn’t get poached by NIL.
The offensive line is the major issue in the program. Not sure if it’s talent or coaching or both.

It’s never as bad as it seems nor as good as it seems. We are young. Having said that, the NIL storm that is brewing does scare me.
In this new age of college free agency the coaching staff that figures it out will succeed and those that don't will fail.

1) Head coach has to look at his staff and make aggressive action. A coach which can make adjustments on the fly.
2) Hire Iowa’s special team coach ( and one of their best recruiters).
3) See 1 & 2

Nothing to be optimistic about. The good players will transfer for better NIL deals. CMC will stick with Manning.

I said the same thing tonight. Questions ar WR and TE. A RB room that needs to stay healthy, an OL that maybe ahsnt ever been that good without great blocking TEs to help. I think the D will be very good again and STs that will be better. However, the offense has soooo many questio marks going into 2023. Hit the portal and we all need to kick into NIL.

I think we are learning a tough lesson about “depth”. While it sounds great, it would appear in our case it’s more a lack of people separating themselves than quality depth.

We need a few game breakers. That’s really the long and short of it.

Paul Rhoads dug his grave by having old buddies and terrible offensive assistants. Bill Bleil, Messingham, Pope, and others were just toally ineffective at coaching and recruiting.

Campbell is at an important cross roads right now. If he stays married to Joel Gordon, Myers, and Manning - that could be a tailspin he never comes out of.

I think almost everyone on offense could go outside of Nate Scheelhaase. I think he is safe b/c of his young coach starpower and he's an ace recruiter. Either elevate Scheelhaase to OC, or go find a great OC in the market this winter. In the new big 12 we have to be so much better on offense than this.
