Been reading about the cholesterol thing. They aren't so sure about that anymore, especially if you eat good fats like fish oil, avocado, olive oil etc. If you eat a keto diet, fat is necessary to get you through the day without carbs.
Nobody in rural Iowa is eating that stuff. They could sell 52oz. cups of gravy there.

Anyone who tracks calories and watches their weight knows that diet is more important than exercise based on the simple math. You can work out for an hour and a half and burn 1200 calories and blow it all eating some slices of pizza and cheese bread in about 5 minutes. That said, I find exercising regularly makes me feel better, improves my mood, and helps motivate me to eat less and eat better food when I do eat. So there is some residual benefit beyond just the simple calorie math IMO.

I've said this for years. Diet controls your weight, but exercise controls how good you feel.

I can understand the problem with getting healthier food in rural america, but I don't buy the notion of not being able to get outside and find a place to walk, run, or bike ride. My favorite running is when I get to go back to my in-laws and explore the country roads. Obviously have to be on a higher alert for trucks, but mornings out there doesnt get much more beautiful.
I think the rural food issue is tied to poverty. Anyone who can afford to water their garden has one in a small town. Farmer’s market twice a week with actual produce. Of course unless you have a big freezer you still have a problem part of the year.

It sucks, because I’m not hating on people for being fat or wanting people to feel bad, but there are no good excuses. You can make whatever excuse you want, but no places have become less hospitable to exercise in the last 40 years, and good foods are probably more accessible.

The truth is that the bad habits are just also easier to feed (no pun intended), and many people have chosen to be more sedentary and to eat more sugars and processed foods. If you live in a rural area, you can easily have a large garden. That’s exercise and food that is better for you and tastes better honestly. But it’s work to get outside and do it…and it’s also more work to cook/prepare it the right way…

There's also probably no way to actually burn 1200 calories that fast, so it's more like you workout for 1.5 hours and burn 400 calories, and then eat a single piece of pizza for the same amount of calories. I think the average person doesn't realize how quickly you can consume 2000 calories if you're not paying attention.

You would be surprised how fast you can burn calories by switching up the way you workout. I’ll do a hard leg workout for about 45 minutes to an hour and burn 700 calories, and then do an incline walk at a fairly decent pace and burn another 3-400. You have to really push yourself though to get there. Most people when they workout are just half ass moving around to the workouts or not truly hitting them hard. If you make a workout kick your ass you can burn quickly.

Anyone trying to lose weight should absolutely lift weights. You get the calories to continue to burn even after you are done as the muscles repair themselves. I try to get people to lift with me all the time who are just walkers or runners.

As someone who travels to Wisconsin frequently, I'm going to call BS on their ranking of 28. People in that state are FAT! You can't drink 24/7 and eat German food (and fast food-Culvers) all day long without putting on the lbs.
Lambeau Field on Sundays is #1 on the obesity list and it's not even close.

It's anecdotal, but I'm pretty sure these kind of lists are mostly based off "what your state politics are" and/or the health care options in the state. Blue states generally rank, red generally low (with the exception of Utah ranking high and New Mexico ranking low).

I live at the intersection of Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and there's no difference on any side of those lines (if anything, Wisconsinites are the fattest), and the states are all kind of in different spots on the list. That said, I don't spend enough time in Minneapolis or Milwaukee either. It does seem that urban populations are thinner as a general rule though.

People are definitely more fit in Colorado and Utah. It's part of the lifestyle. It's pretty obvious there. And people are definitely less fit in Louisiana (again, it's part of the lifestyle). Minnesota? Nah. That's a reflection of having one of the best hospitals in the world I suspect.
As someone that has lots of friends and family in both the twin cities and Madison as well as rural SE Minnesota and western Wisconsin I can assure you there is a big difference. There is even a difference in rural northern and NE Minnesota vs southern. Access to and the desire to do year round active hobbies plays a big role.

Yoga too.

Agreed. Don't worry about cholesterol. Cholesterol is in every cell in the body. Most of the cholesterol in your body was made by your body, not ingested. Cholesterol is essential.

Want to avoid/reverse obesity and the chronic diseases rampant today, the diseases making most people fat and sick? Avoid Omega 6 fatty acid, specifically lineolic acid, like the plague it is. Avoid all seed oils and anything fried in seed oils, avoid all fake/processed foods, avoid chicken, pork (all fed high Omega 6 diets which winds up in their flesh). Eat ruminant meats - beef, lamb, goat, etc. Eat only real food, never fake/processed food. Simple. But not easy.

I have no clue where the avoid seed oils things comes from, but I’m fairly positive that has been debunked.

Also, there is nothing wrong with eating pork or chicken, either. This seems like some of those extreme “health” people you see on tv basically saying you can never eat anything it will kill you.
