I will be having surgery in January to repair my rotator cuff.

I have a hooked acromion that has caused impingement. (Born with it). Add in wear and tear to the rotator cuff. It is my dominant arm.

Wanting to know what I should have on hand to make recovery easier

The physical therapist gave me a flyer for an icing machine that pumps cold water through a wrap. Is it worth the expense?

Luckily I will have help.

I have no idea what they cost but if it's even moderately expensive I would likely abstain, as swelling reduction likely won't be your dominant issue.

Likely the hardest and most frustrating part of the entire deal will be regaining strength, which is the LAST part to come back. First to alleviate will be the pain from the condition itself. You will have pain, but it will be surgical/repair pain that is often less nagging than the pre-surgical pain. Pain, or largely of the absence of it, will be the first thing to go. Next will be the ROM which should improve steadily once cleared for PT. The strength will be the last component to fully return. Many will achieve 75-80 percent strength recovery within 6 months, but (depending on age) the last 20 or so percent often takes a full YEAR to return. I've known many who were extremely frustrated and thought it might not ever come back. When it does it can and often comes quickly, seemingly within a couple of weeks, and often without rhyme or reason.

Just do what you are instructed to do, stick with the PT and exercises, and don't rush/overdo the recovery. The key it's a PROCESS and often a very long one from start to finish. Outside of the rare case where surgery shouldn't have been performed (as it wasn't the key underlying issue) or their are lingering complications, most say this surgery is often one of the best decisions they made and one they wish they had made sooner once it's over.

Best of lucky and may you have a speedy and successful recovery.

Big problem

I do not like recliners. I’m not even 5’ and a recliner is impossible for me to get out of. Fear that spouse will leave me stranded in it.

You can rent a recliner that also has a stand up motorized feature. It’s typically used by the elderly to help them stand up but many post op patients love them. They shouldn’t cost that much to rent either.
