I guess I’ve never understood why anyone gets annoyed by when other people leave. It’s not like the players are trying to leave at that time. There are different levels of investment, but at the end of the day it’s entertainment for all of us. If some want to leave early, it’s just kind of a whatever for me.
I get it if we're getting blown out or vise versa, but if you're going to come to a game with the plan to leave early, even if it's a close game, why even bother buying tickets in the first place? On top of that, no way the geezers leaving early make it back to their car fast enough to listen to Walters' call on the radio either.
If you leave with 30 seconds to go(if the outcome has been decided) and jog out to your car you still are able beat the traffic and can zip right out. That's the best strategy for watching the whole game and not sitting for 15/20 minutes in a parking lot.
I’m not saying I personally think it’s the greatest decision. I just don’t particularly understand being so annoyed by what other people are doing. Unless there’s a stream of them blocking your view. I’d get that…
I will also say some of this may be on the university (to an extent anyway). Hilton parking is SO bad. On the occasions I have left early for some reason, I noticed I’m home about the time Eric is finishing his interviews. Normally I’m just exiting the lot or perhaps leaving Ames.
Right. The people leaving with 3 minutes left and running from the door to C6 in 9.9 seconds aren't geezers.
This isn't and has never been an old person event. I know...I'm guilty because when I was younger I participated a few times.
Never won any medals but gave it the ol college try.
It's not just during beatdowns of scrub opponents. It's also during the one-possession games against Kansas. Game situation doesn't matter to these folks. It's all about the race to (1) the concourse wall and (2) the parking lot.
Nothing screams "Hilton Magic" like people scurrying out of the lower bowl with 4 minutes left in a game that hasn't been decided.
I'll give an example from a time that stands out to me. In 2016 we had Buddy Hield and #1 Oklahoma in town and we were either up 2 or down 2 at the final media timeout. I watched hundreds of people grabbing their coats and headed for the exit as the flag guy ran around the upper concourse. In what was shaping up to be a historic win, why even consider leaving that early?
Right…but I guess what’s the alternative? Locking the doors until the final buzzer? Having those seats empty for the entire game? Guiding those individuals to a conference room as they’re leaving to give them a lecture on why it’s bad for them to do what they’re doing?
I guess not worrying about it seems like the simplest solution to me. No matter where you’re going, you’re going to find people who go/do the same type of thing as you for a different reason. Some people go to the state fair to eat, some to see animals, some to see ugly cakes and butter cows…and then there are some of us who really don’t like the fair…
The best alternative is for there to not be an inner concourse where people can gather and watch. That's what the seats are for. If people are going to leave, then they need to leave all the way.
RE: Leaving Games Early:

I was at a UCLA @ Stanford football game back in 1995, and I was sitting in the Stanford donor section (as a guest). ON MY ROW, one person arrived late in the early 2nd Quarter for whatever reason, and another person left a bit later in the 2nd to go to a Water Polo Match! FWIW, I stayed for the whole game.
To be fair, I did leave the St. John's game with a little under 5 minutes to go with a 9 point Cyclone lead (after seeing the Flag Guy run round the concourse). I wanted to beat the traffic back to DSM a bit, and at that point, only bad things can happen.
It was a good decision for me, but I'm a Boomer and getting older and just don't GAF as much as I once did. / sarcasm. That being said, if the game was tight and undecided, I would have stuck it out and dealt with el traffico.

That was a Big Monday game if I remember right, so it was probably about 10:15 at night.
I'm not taking a side on this, I'll only leave if a game is out of hand, but I don't have a very long drive either.
People do this stuff at concerts all the time so I don't know how this is different.
Lol, welcome to society. You know how many concerts I've been to where people have paid a couple hundred bucks for tickets then get too wasted to even remember anything?
Not my thing but if people want to blow their money then miss half the game it's their business.
Look…if you want to propose that, more power to you. I mean, I guess I get finding it confusing or maybe mildly annoying, but in my mind that’s on those people to worry about what they want to do, whether they should spend their money tickets, etc. I don’t buy the notion that it somehow waters down Hilton Magic, as I doubt those are the fans yelling loudest anyway.
But I guess I’ll also just add this. My father-in-law leaves everything early. He’s in a hurry to get to a place early and he’s in a hurry to leave. It’s probably some form of mental Illness. His wife gets kind of annoyed, and his one daughter for sure does, but again it feels like that’s on them to either live with it or encourage him to go to a counselor. I can’t really imagine as a non-invested third party really getting worked up about it…
I have a policy of sticking it out to the bitter end. My family gets a little irked at times, but my older family were the ones that taught me this, so I blame them. I still have incredible strategies for getting out of the parking lots and town for both football and basketball games. Am I some of the first people to leave the Ames city limits after games, more than likely. Do I have to walk a bit to get to my car, yes. Will I do this when I get to be 80, not sure. I am young enough that a bit of walking is OK but who knows what will happen when I'm older and care that night is coming or I can't walk 1/2 mile to my car.
I sure hope when I'm older that people cut me some slack and appreciate that I had been buying tickets and coming to games long enough to have earned the right to do whatever I want with my tickets including, leaving a little early or not using them (while trying to give them to someone else to fill the seats. I too feel that completely unused seats are a waste when we are more or less sold out.)
Let's cut those folks some slack, they probably have their reasons for doing what they do and are probably contributing as much (or maybe much, much more) as any of us to the financial support of the athletic department.

Yep we are old and have left a game early twice. Once was a football game when I was eight months pregnant and thought I was having contractions that turned out to be Braxton Hicks, once when husband was sick, both were in second quarter. We were still firmly entrenched at that freezing cold Texas Tech game with our feet in the snow to the bitter end.I am the exact opposite. I have NEVER left an event early in my life. I like watching things after a game and not feeling rushed by lots of people behind me. That first Campbell year that had so many losses and the students would all be gone so the team started singing to the band was a great idea that they kept up even in the good years.
We have a two hour drive and have gotten home very late for the night games but if we are going to commit the money and time we will see the game through. I understand why some leave early. I am more annoyed by east stadium rich middle of field people that seem like they are out tailgating 80% of the game, but it’s really not fair of me to judge other people’s circumstances.
When we go to basketball games, it’s usually a break game that is on a weekend and again are in no rush.
