There is such a huge jump from small school Minnesota high school basketball to Big 12 basketball on the defensive end. Offensively im sure he would hold his own out there, but defensively that transition is going to take time for most people. And to the people saying he faced top level competition on the AAU circuit, youre correct, but the defensive intensity there isnt even close to the next level, even though the talent is similar. Eli will be fine, there is just a transition period. Thats normal.

And you know what he also might not be fine at this level and that’s okay too. There are so many opportunities out there now and basically no restrictions.

I think the Grill comparison is a good one. Grill played way more minutes as a freshman, but that was only because the team was absolute garbage, and we were down to 6-7 guys at times.

Eli is an exceptional athlete, but doesn't have a great jumpshot, just like Grill at that stage in his career. Eli is probably ahead of Grill as a ballhandler. Eli can make the same transformation as Grill did. He just has to put in the work. There will be plenty of opportunity next year with Gabe and Holmes moving on.

Lol. Grill’s experience level alone makes this not true.

You mean some highlight videos with hardly any decent defense being played may not dictate how a major college career goes?

For the record Grill still terrifies me when he dribbles. But as others have mentioned, his ball handling as a freshman was as bad as I can remember. Guy wouldn't even face the rim when he caught half the time. Certainly not the case now!

How many coaches do you see playing someone like Eli in that situation in a conference game?

I can't think of a time where a coach didn't wait until about the 2 minute mark or maybe just a tad earlier if it's like 40 pts.

8 minutes. Long time. Don’t take chances with that much time. I’ll leave it TJ to figure out amounts of playing time. Not some random poster who thinks our 10th or 11th man deserves a minute or two more of PT. We blew an 8 point the previous game in about 2 minutes. So maybe 4 minutes left in the game I would look to put in Eli. Believe Eli played 3 minutes.
Lol yes Eli entering the game would automatically mean a 30 point lead would vanish and Otz would sit and watch it happen. Just think maybe the lead might grow? This 4 star recruit when ISU offered; then injured dropped to a 3 star. Yes he would stand there and just hand the ball to the opposing team.

Freshman Naz was on a good (though not great) team that pulled a #10 seed. He was behind quality guards/wings like Tyrus McGee, Will Clyburn, Chris Babb, and Korie Lucious.

Freshman Grill was on an awful team (especially after Haliburton went down, which is when Grill received the majority of his minutes) with two playable guards -- Tyrese plus Bolton. He couldn't manage to beat out Prentiss "Stepback" Nixon, Terrence "Bustorama" Lewis, and freshman Tre Jackson for minutes.

Freshman Eli is on a team projected as a #3 seed right now stuck being Kalscheur and Grill playing the best basketball of their lives and with the best SG play we've seen since Naz and Matt graduated plus Jaren Holmes, a grown man who looks like he should have finished college in approximately 2003.

Their minutes are inversely proportional to the quality of the teams. Put freshman Naz or freshman Grill on this roster, and I would imagine they'd barely see the court just as with Eli King right now.
Grill was better than Jackson even then, certainly had a lot more upside.

Yes, consider the difference in practice opportunities as well. Because Grill’s freshman team was not good, it’s reasonable to assume Grill got a lot more run in 5 on 5. King is probably watching from the side most of the time.

If you're going to reply with this kind of hyperbole at east tell us how often you see coaches clear out starters with 8 minutes left in the game.

with a 30 point lead? You would think Watson, King, Ward would see a few more minutes. Mix them in. Save the starters. Like the Center rolling his ankle in meaningless minutes. With Kansas up next. Do you really think a 30 point lead would evaporate in 8 min? That the scholarship players are that terrible? Comon give us a break.

It’s weird how people don’t ever think past the obvious in high level athletics. There’s a plan. There’s always a plan. Having your main guys lose 8 minutes of conference game time isn’t part of the plan. They are working towards a goal and those minutes are more valuable for the team.

And like I said, it’s a two way street. If Adams gives up on his team with 8 minutes left in the game and empties his bench (nearly a 1/4 of the game which no coach would do), then TJ would respond appropriately.

yes the plan, oh the plan thanks for reminding us all of the plan. now what if #21 breaks his leg instead of rolling an ankle in Meaningless minutes for the number one inside presence going into the Kansas game. Would you still be preaching about the plan? Wait a minute; are you talking about the Amway plan? Spin some circles. Comon man.

This is some little league middle school 'everyone shines' November thinking.

Go ahead and name one coach that you've seen do this in an early January game with a whole bunch of things in the works like ISU has.

I'll use my own hyperbole: should a player just not play at all since they could get hurt at any time? How do you know Osun's minutes were meaningless? Are they not looking to improve? If it were a close game he could still get hurt, no?

I’ll let you handle the fantasy land what ifs. Seems like you’re unhinged enough that you would be really good at it.

You’re basing your anger off something that didn’t happen.

That's it. No practicing, no warming up. Nobody move.

This has to be a family member who never gets out of small town Minnesota or something.

Jared and Blum said on the most recent podcast that TJ and the team were a little salty at the way Adams and Texas Tech didn't call off the dogs during the rout in the Big 12 tournament last year.

Hence, TJ keeping the hammer down was a bit of payback. Run up the score on us, run up the score on you. That might seem petty, but I like the mentality of "nobody ***** with us unpunished."
