I’m pretty sure the only new movies I’ve seen since the last Oscars were All Quiet and Glass Onion. Both were amazing and I’ll be rooting for All Quiet at the Oscars

Everything Everywhere All At Once is a trippy ride, but if you go with it it’s really quite good. All four nominated performances are terrific - here‘s hoping the Bagel with Everything smiles down upon them. :D

I really liked Top Gun: Maverick - it’s a really good motion picture. It’s not going to win, but good on it for being nominated.

Amazingly for me, those two are the only major nominees I’ve seen. I used to try to see every movie with a major Oscar nomination, but it’s getting tougher to do. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, The Fabelmans, Tar, and Elvis are definitely on my list. I also am curious about All Quiet On The Western Front, The Whale and The Banshees Of Inisherin … however, I just can’t rouse myself to have much interest in Avatar: The Way Of Water (sorry, James Cameron, it wasn’t that good the first time, and implanting the dead villain’s memories/personality into another being just so he can continue his Ahab-like revenge journey isn’t selling me on this one).

I have seen “The Banshee’s of Inisherin” and “All Quiet On The Western Front” of the nominated movies. Banshees was good, probably be even better after a second watch (just like “In Bruges” was), but All Quiet imo, is a top 5 war movie ever made. I’ve never seen the original though. The story telling is phenomenal. I need to read the book, but the movie is just masterful story telling and a must see for everyone. It truly depicts the complete unnecessary reasoning and horrors of war.

I liked the 2022 version a lot better than the 1930 version of All Quiet (although it’s been 10-15 years since I’ve seen it).

I loved the book too and have read it several times. FYI, the 2022 movie isn’t faithful re the plot, but I think it is entirely faithful to the themes

The book was really good read it a long time ago, it might still be on the shelves at my folks somewhere.

Glad Top Gun is getting some run. It really was a great movie. Sometimes they overlook action movies to concentrate on movies that nobody watches or that are any good at all. Mavrick was next level

As usual, there were some shocks and snubs in major categories. Overall, I like the noms but honestly, I thought this year was just 'ok' with great movies.

I LOVE all the adoration for Everything Everywhere All At Once. We saw it way back in May I think and knew it was going to be up for a ton of awards. Ke Huy Quan is a lock to win supporting actor and I find that to be just the most awesome of things. I grew up loving him as Data and Shortround. Just a good comeback story. I think Yeoh wins too but could go to Cate the Great in Tar.

No one has heard of the movie Causeway but Brian Tyree Henry getting a nomination is glorious.

Andrea Riseborough's campaign is going to be talked about for years. She literally didn't get nominated in ANY other group like the BAFTAS or Golden Globes or SAG the entire year but got nominated for Best Actress for the biggest...the Oscar. This campaign was all ground support and word of mouth from major celebrities. Cate Blanchett and others wouldn't stop saying how Andrea's performance isn't just one of the best of the year but of all time. She just kept gaining more steam and she made the cut. Fascinating story. Movie looks great too.

Booooooo for not nominating Weird Al original song “Now You Know”. It’s not even a parody, better song to actually listen to than the Rihana and Gaga songs.

VIsual Effects is really interesting because Avatar will get all the hype but both The Batman and Top Gun Maverick in my opinion have more impressive practical effects. The best since Mad Max Fury Road and there was a lull for years that really bored me. All three are worthy in majority of years, I think you have to give it to Maverick if you really care about pushing the boundaries of realistic film making. A movie like Way of Water is an incremental improvement (certainly better effect than Marvel movies) but imho movies like Fury Road, Maverick and The Batman are a critical intervention of something that has gone off the rails spiraling into boredom.

I’m surprised Elvis got as much as it did beyond Butler’s performance. It has several amazing sequences and the editing and visuals are incredible, but in some ways it’s not even what I’d consider a good film. Tom Hanks is really bad, the decision to frame it from Colonel Parker’s point of view does not work at all. I think it could have been epic but it kind of sucked.

Good info on AQOTWF. I will have to check it out.

Based on the way you described the film, it sounds like they captured the spirit of the book. I think everyone should read it. To me, it's one of the most important books of the last hundred years.

In fact, didn’t Hanks get nominated for a Razzie for the worst performance of the year? And then A Man Called Otto got zilch from the Academy today (I thought Hanks was very good in a challenging role there).

I think a lot of Academy voters appreciate incredible practical effects and that’s why Maverick and Fury Road both got best picture nominations…also the expanded nominees allow for it.

Almost no films will ever get the budget to do something close to the Way of Water and trying to imitate it with less resources results in a bunch of Gumby looking crap. IMHO the real breakthrough cinema experiences lately are more like Everything Everywhere and Maverick…even though I enjoyed Way of Water.

There is a magic to capturing something “real” in a lens that still can’t be recreated with green screen. Maverick was such a wild ride because the action seems real, you are there. The original 80s Top Gun used great real footage but when watching it now you’re constantly aware it’s edited footage. Maverick looks real (because it mostly is real) and you feel like you’re in the aircraft because the tech to shoot a hi res film has gotten so small. I could watch behind the scenes stuff for Maverick or Fury Road all day, it’s nuts what they did.

If that was a great portrayal of Parker…they were absolutely insane for making him as big of a character in the film as Elvis.

I feel like I could cut Elvis into a jaw dropping amazing 60 minute film by reducing the Parker in it. As it is, 5/10 for me. It’s Jar Jar Binks level distracting.
