Not a good sign for the future of Hilton magic when the "Ensure" crowd comes out in force while the non stop, big balls, all mouth Gen Z. crowd doesn't because....

it might snow
it's too late
I need to check my phone

This isn't a new problem... Even during Hoibergs run at Iowa State there were a lot of games that were poorly attended by the students. College kids just have way more things to keep them busy compared to when we were in school. This isn't an Iowa State problem.

Pollard needs to cut student tickets 25%.

If this were a case of them not being loud and cheering and bringing energy, I wouldn’t be upset. A butt in a seat is good enough for me.

Just simply not showing up to a game because you’re busy on Fortnite or whatever the case may be is unacceptable.
I see we’re throwing out every possible dumb take imaginable on here.

Could it be that maybe there were a ton of undergraduate night exams going on Wednesday night?

When you have a designated section for students and 500 are missing, it's more obvious when they're missing. Now when it comes to regular ticket holders, spread out 500-1000 empty seats it doesn't look so bad.

Overall, the students have been fantastic this year. It could always be worse. Back in the Mcdoormat days both ends of the balcony were student section and those were always empty or sold to the public because they couldn't even fill up for KU or Iowa.

Watching on tv last, crowd looked good, not wall to wall packed but looked good.

If there was no one at the game and we won every game would people care?

Do we still oversell the student section? The empty upper deck of the student section has been a problem forever, but we seemed to have it figured out it in the middle of the Hoiberg years once it started being oversold. Perhaps the demand isn’t there anymore to do that though.
Yes, it's still oversold. Students were turned away from the Texas game. My sister in law was one of them and she attends pretty much all games including last night

In order to attend games you must wait in line to get inside Hilton.

False. If you want to sit in the first 4-6 rows, you wait in line. If you just want in the building, you can roll up whenever you'd like for 90% of the games.

I was a student for the first 4 hoiberg years and never missed a game. The balcony of the student section still would be less than half full for games like TCU, OU, OSU, etc. it was similar then too.

There were Math 195, Math 196, Math 207, and Phys 231 exams Wednesday night, that’s a ton of classes all on one day. Physics 231 by itself is a huge course.
Was thinking it was close to exam time for courses with two “midterms.” I think the Calculus courses all have tests tonight which could impact a lot of people as well. It’s almost like people don’t understand the primary reason to pay a buttload to attend a university. Also weird to want to grab student section when the rest of the place isn’t even sold out.

Well at least we made it pretty far into the season before a student section call out. I say that’s progress.

And no, it wouldn’t have filled up if you sold general admission tickets an hour before. There was still unsold tickets with all those promotions.

Bad weather, late tip, not rival or big name team (don’t care if they were top 20) and the team in a slump gets you that.
For yesterdays game you are correct, for Saturday against OSU? I guarantee the general public could have filled in a lot of seats in the student section. Again, this is a problem for most games. Also, the weather was fine in Ames last night. A bit windy, but who cares? If wind keeps people away, then we’ve really gotten soft.

How many Saturday evening tests were there last Saturday for the OSU game?

Physics 231 is part of core engineering courses. A lot of students have to take that class. If I looked at the night class test list correctly, Calculus I, II, and III, all also core engineering, have tests tonight. Those classes weed out a lot of potential engineers.

That was physics 221 when I was there. Math 165, 166, 265 were the calculus classes for STEM fields. Throw in chem 167/177 and you have got the ill-prepared, prospective engineer sweating .

It was also 221 when my kids were taking it, at least the older ones. Not sure when it switched but that’s what the catalog says now.

That's kind of my point, those classes are geared towards engineering majors (it appears). While there are many engineering majors at ISU, there are also many non-engineering majors at ISU that did not have those tests last night.

The Student Section attendance was pathetic.

When I was a student, you could not get a ticket. It was sold out regardless of the day/time/opponent.

I'm coming down for the OU game next week. I plan on yelling like crazy.

My roommate in college once took a Chem test in 15 minutes in order to make it to a game. She did about as well on the test as she would have if she had taken the two hours. She’s been gainfully employed for 30 years. Do you know what one of her favorite college memories is? It’s not the many tests she took at night.
