So your saying we need to hope there are hundreds of not thousands of kids that get caught up in this mess so that every school is equally disadvantaged.

Or better yet, we need some kids at Bama, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State and USC caught up in this scandal and punishments will magically get minimized.

Instead of a "covid year", everyone gets a "draftkings year"...

Rules are rules and in this case its about one of the most nefarious things out there. Gambling will suck them in and next thing you know they are either being pressured to do something bad or they are so over their heads in debt that they start making really stupid/risky bets. Gambling needs to be 100% against the rules for all athletes.

You've watched too many movies. I understand there are outliers, but most people are making small bets to entertain themselves. This isn't some illegal ring run by mobsters. It's student athletes betting on sports in the same way that the rest of society is legally gambling on sports.

Slippery slope. Say an ISU football player is tight with an Iowa player, and he learns through hearsay that a lot of Iowa players are playing injured.

Imagine in this scenario that same player bets on Michigan playing Iowa that week knowing some knowledge of undisclosed injuries.....

Now - if it's an Iowa or ISU football player betting on golf or the superbowl or nfl, yeah I don't think that should be a wild multi game suspension, definitely not.
Betting a game because you have an inside track on info isn't illegal though, that happens all the time. Just because a player is more likely than the general public to have connections shouldn't make a difference. Members of the betting public will be all over the spectrum as far as their level of inside info or lack there of.

Ban the players from betting games involving their own teams. Ban point shaving. Anything beyond that should be just fine.

But gambling these days isn't about going to your shady bookie that has ties to the mob. Sports gambling is done via app with little communication between you and the corporation running the app. They have more at stake to make sure to keep the appearance of legitimacy than any of the players. They're not going to pressure players to affect games as that puts their multi-million dollar enterprise at risk.

I honestly don't even care about the football aspect of it at this point. We're going to suck anyway, and if we've got guys that are this stupid, let them suffer the consequences. I'm more concerned about MBB... I think we could be pretty good this season and do not want to lose any key pieces there.

What really ticks me off though, is it appears that the Iowa Gaming Commission is the only gaming commission in the entire U.S. that decided to investigate the college teams in their state? What an Iowa thing to do.... punish their own athletes and make them look bad.... while the Alabama's, Georgia's, tOSU's, etc, etc just skate by looking like angels.

It really does look pretty stupid. Is it just a way for the NCAA to make a power grab?

This entire thing is so stupid. Everyone just letting Iowa schools fall on their saber in hopes it will quiet down.

Yeah. Still not sure how the Iowa schools are the only ones that are caught up in this. Did the state provide some level of investigation that no other state did, or what? Cause I don't believe that Iowa and Iowa State athletes are the only ones across the country that has put down a few bucks on games.

Hard saying when we don't know the extent of the allegations. If it's the under age thing, whoop-dee Doo Bazzle.

But was this as a result of reporting by the state or voluntary reporting by the athletes? Cause if this came from the state, there's no way SEC states are going to report similar violations.

I love how some think online gambling is new. It's not. I knew college students off shore betting online when I was in college 20 years ago, and you didn't need to be tech savvy to do it either. If I remember right lots of people were using World Sports Exchange (WSEX) at the time. What's new is LEGAL online sports gambling. Lots of people have been gambling online for decades, and I'm sure that includes student athletes. It's just easier to catch now that it's legitimate and can easily be monitored.
It’s ubiquitous now, it wasn’t then. The ease with which a college athlete or anyone can bet now is much different than it was then. I doubt more than a few on this board remember or have even heard of WSEX (although I’m intriqued by the name). Now you can’t go a day without seeing multiple ads for Fan Duel or Draft Kings. I just did a google search for “online sports betting sites” and this popped up. The access 20 years ago is nowhere near what it is today.

I thought we didn't have any basketball players involved?

You have a good point in your second paragraph here. Although we need to hear more before speculating.

As to your first para, I am hoping you will be more positive this year. Not just for basketball, but overall. It will be good for your well being! Why not wait until we actually suck before saying we suck?

Deal! I will try to wait until we actually suck before saying we suck.

I don't say that going into every year though. There are years I've gone into quite optimistic, but usually we suck those years too.

Great! Progress.

Although I am not always positive, I know positive energy is a good thing, and generally uplifting.
