I'm telling you guys, and I've been telling ya, I just have a rotten feeling in my gut about the trajectory of the football program. Between NIL and the disaster that last season was, momentum is seriously against us right now. Campbell probably should have got out while the gettin' was good a couple years ago, because I doubt he will ever be as hot a commodity like that again. If they go even 6-6 this year, he should look for a greener pasture. Until Iowa State and our fans get serious about giving to NIL, the expectation for us should be bottom 3rd in the conference. I hate to have such a gloomy outlook, because I love Iowa State and eat, drink, sleep, and breathe Iowa State, but it just seems like there is a glass ceiling in football here. Campbell would have had a legitimate shot to be our version of Kirk Ferentz if not for NIL I truly believe. Spread offense and Air Raid is what did McCarney in, NIL will be MC's demise.
Last year was a rebuilding year, particularly on the offensive side of the ball. We all expected that. This year should be viewed as a stepping stone for the next few years. Being realistic, 6 wins this season would be adequate. But I think we all want to see improved play from the OL this season. That's the short term goal I personally see.
The long term goal would be a team that consistently wins 8 games a year and be in contention for the conference title every few years. Can CMC get to that level of sustained success? Maybe. But keep in mind that's the same objective most schools have as well. I think CMC has the capabilities to achieve that level of sustained success, but they will have to recruit well particularly on the OL to have such sustained success IMHO

From everything I've heard, CMC and his family absolutely love it here. It is certainly true that his name is not as hot as it once was, so where the heck would he go? A lateral move would be stupid because he has incredible job security here.

He's not going anywhere. Our football scheduling is about to get easier too with the round robin going away. Matt knows that.

I appreciate the optimistic take and hope you are right and I am wrong. I am just not finding a lot to get excited about the outlook of this season and the next few. Recruiting is leveling off, performance on the field has suffered really the last two years, Matt turned over half of his staff this year, we are at or near the bottom in NIL fund gathering, and on top of that the great unknown of the gambling allegations. That is enough to take the wind out of my sails, and starting to feel a little too familiar to some of Matt's predecessors.

The changes to the makeup of the conference are certainly about the best thing going for the program right now, I agree.

We’ve never had an advantage in recruiting and IMO, coaching at ISU, you have to think outside the box. NIL is the shiny new toy but look how many thousands of kids a year enter the transfer portal to never get picked up then essentially ending their college football experience. Look at the mass exodus of transfers from A&M and Miami.

I think Campbell’s approach at NIL is to retain talent and build from within then be picky and choose-y when it comes to adding transfers. It’s tough to bring in a ton of transfers and expect the team to gel right away - which is one of the many reasons why I believe Colorado will stink again this year.

If you’re going after kids who are only chasing the bag, those aren’t the types of kids you want within your program, IMO. And I think we’ve seen that in football and men’s basketball for sure, which is why we didn’t get that basketball transfer from Nevada that ended up at Tech

I don’t think glass ceiling means what you think it means

Nice post within a "welcome new commitment" thread. Do you go to parties and toss a turd in the punch bowl too?

Welcome Cael! Just so you know, theres zero worries about Campbell. From what I'm seeing, CyintheNorth believes Coach is firmly entrenched in Ames.

The coaching changes should bring improved development, especially in the Oline.

CMC recognized changes needed to be made and made them. If Clanton is the answer to the Oline then we will be fine and so will CMC.

The defense is fine and will be for the near future.

Damn Debbie, you are a breath of stale air.

I know you are a fan, a great fan. But maybe keep this type of thought to yourself until it actually happens? It ain't happened yet. Re-boot your faith, man.

Not only is this not happening, but to do it in a recruit welcoming thread. Bad form.

Welcome Cael!!! That's a big name to live up to in Ames. :)

Cael Sanderson
Hopefully he follows the same path and goes undefeated his whole college career.
No, this is not happening. It would be too hard on Cyinthenorth!

On the other hand, I'd be up for it!

Cael, pay no attention to that man behind the curtain. Welcome again!
