Somewhere Iowa
He’s one of the major reasons I’m an ISU fan. I was 8 and listening to that big 8 championship on the radio and it’s my first memory of cheering for a team to win. Those seniors then came to our high school and played a game against some locals. He was the first autograph I ever cared about.

Nailed it. I was at the KU game in Allen Fieldhouse his senior year and fans around me went out of their way to tell me what a great player he was. Keep in mind until that time pre Floyd, ISU was not a place where talent went.
Phog website has a very nice thread going on Dedric.

I think Floyd leaving might be a bigger what-if for ISU basketball than Hoiberg leaving. The way he was recruiting towards the end they were setting up to have some monster teams.

And they both made the mistake of going to the post Jordan Bulls. Floyd is the better coach Imo.

He and Pete Taylor are linked forever to me...I can still hear Pete saying over and over again. "Willoughby for three....GOOOOOD! Dedric Willoughby!"

"Over to Dedric, 3 on the way....gooood again!"

It just rolled off his tongue, like Pete was created to yell the words Dedric Willoughby.

Damn it I was doing OK reading thru this thread till you you brought up Pete. Love JW but Pete will always be my #1 announcer.

Great player and one of the most humble, truly nice guys. Sucks! I used to run into him back in the day at Tazzles.
Saw him outside at Jack Trice a few years ago. Pointed him out to my friend and said, “That’s Willoughby!” Dedric yelled out to us that it was good to see us. Like we were old friends. Great guy!

JW is a major reason I became a cyclone for life.

That's awesome! I'm guessing that is who you grew up listening to call the games. Pete was mine many hours of hearing him call games before everything was on TV.
I'll still listen to JW and turn the TV announcers off (not Fran F. though)

I think we would have been similar to what OK State was under Eddie Sutton. If TF would have stayed 20 years he would have won 500 games at ISU and went to a couple Final Fours. He was always looking for a better job though.

My first favorite Cyclone when I was less than 5. Made me an Iowa State fan. Made me proud to wear the cardinal and gold. This one just ******* hurts.

Rest in Power, Dedric. My life is different because of what you did in a Cyclone jersey.

I know coaches usually don't stay long now, but I sure hope Jamie can keep TJ around for a while. Here is hoping Allison keeps wanting to stay in central Iowa.

Major typo by me (multi tasking):

PT is a major reason I became a a cyclone for life.

EH and JW are really good!

Growing up listening to PT is my earliest ISU memory. Loved that guy.

Wow, tough thing to read earlier tonight as I was resting after work before my weekly pickup basketball game. I was in the stands as student while he was hitting big threes. Those Kansas games were awesome environment. 47 is way too young

He was an absolute killer on the court with a smile that was genuine and not cocky…everyone we played against knew he was our offense and he still torched them..a genuine good person
