Not sure what caused Bronny’s episode, but heart conditions in athletes, even young athletes, certainly aren’t unheard of (Hank Gathers, Reggie Lewis). Heart checkups should be a main focus of a young athlete’s healthcare.
There was a guy in my hs, great athlete, 2 years older than me. Played bball at a private Iowa college (idr which one, Wartburg maybe) and had a cardiac event on the court and almost died. That would have been in ~1989.
IDK if all hs athletes could be screened, but I would think it wouldn't be impossible to screen all the college ones. They surely do a detailed health screen inbound anyway, right? Can't imagine its height, weight, turn your head and cough, and off to practice...
In reality they shouldn’t. They aren’t at higher risk than non athletes and their age puts them at very low risk in the first place. That’s exactly why it makes the news because the risk is so low.
Clearly Fred is a time traveler who went back from 2021 to the mid 2010's and wound up stuck because his former self was shunted into an alternate universe. You'd think he would have avoided Nebraska, but maybe he was worried about damaging the timeline.

I’ve read enough of your posts to understand you know more about this stuff than I do, but I meant more of a screening to check for underlying conditions, not necessarily a full cardiac workup or anything.
Max Duggan discovering an underlying condition while undergoing Covid screening is the example that comes to mind.
To be fair in a perfect world they would be checked. In the current world with a shortage of medical staff probably not. But you are 100% right that if everyone had access to full work ups the way we give pro athletes we would catch a lot of serious conditions.
And ultimately you’re not going to prevent the freak accidents like what happened with Hamlin, but catching those early could go a long way.
IIRC from Hoiberg telling his story it was a life insurance screening that caught his heart condition. A defect that would’ve killed him had it not been caught, and it was after he played a full career in college and the NBA.
I honestly had no idea it was this many.

Didn't he retire because of the condition or are you just saying he'd already played a long while?
He did retire because of it, but he would’ve been playing with a defect like that for a long time, if not his whole career. Just relieved nothing bad happened while he was playing.
