Do you think non profitable college athletic programs should give out scholarships?

I've never understood why athletes of any sport outside of basketball and football are getting scholarships.

I love sports as much as anyone. But why are any track/wrestling/volleyball/swim&dive/golf student athletes getting a free ride when there's nothing profitable for Athletic Dept.?

Just pride to represent in those sports? Cause....we've always had those sports?

With Athletic Depts focusing more and more on bottom line, these type of questions will start being asked.

Not exactly sure.

If people in the band can get good sized scholarships, you're damn right that the other sports should be able to get them also.

was going to add a comment about Title IX

yes that is partially why but could make up for football with a couple teams it doesn't explain the vast amount of sports that give out scholarships including a lot of other men's sports

No, but it has to come from somewhere. If athletic departments only had like 3-4 sports, coaching salaries would be even more crazy than they are now.

Aren’t they on academic scholarships. The athletic department is self funded I thought.

Maybe because the school isn’t trying to turn a profit and those sports can enhance the experience of attending the university? I get with the realignment talk everyone is thinking like a corporation but that’s not the mission statement of any university and some entire programs get shut down due to funding already.

You do understand that there are athletes on academic scholarships also? I know a kid who is a walk-on at that other school that is gets a scholarship due to his academics at Iowa.

Right, but the athletic department isn’t handing out academic scholarships. What you are pointing out is apples to oranges.

It makes a handful of students happy they get to compete in some sport they're good at but nobody else at university really cares about it?

i mean i don't have a better alternative, more so thinking about why they get a scholarship and the engineer or person getting MBA or PHD doesn't get a scholarship.

i guess it's simply cause "people like sports and being active and it creates more balanced culture".

I think you would be shocked with how many people are on some sort of scholarship.

Most PhD’s are either getting paid by the university or getting scholarship/aid. A lot of those sports have fans. ISU seems to love their wrestling, hockey is another big one that doesn’t make money but a lot of people love. Just because you don’t like something or think it provides value doesn’t mean others don’t.

How many athletes get full scholarships? My understanding is a lot of the student athletes in the olympic sports get partial scholarships if they get anything at all. I could be wrong, but that's the impression I have.
