A lot of people go to college that don’t finish, get something worthless, or go to a bad college. Costs are out of control but a lot of people do get scholarships, almost everyone I know that went to a private university got one.
Do you think non profitable college athletic programs should give out scholarships?

I think you have to look at how many students you lose from not having athletic programs. The NCAA requires schools to carry x # of programs to maintain D1 status. If you don't offer those scholarships how many students go elsewhere because they want to go to football and basketball games at the highest level?
Some schools give out theatre scholarships, one of my friends got a full ride to Michigan playing the oboe. There are also quidditch and esports scholarships.

Why would the athletics department pay for something like that? They are already keeping the rest of the Iowa State Center afloat.
Nearly all athletic departments are lucky to just break even. I think schools believe it provides a public face for the school. Non-revenue sports are part of that and since the NCAA says scholarships can be given, schools have to give out scholarships to be competitive. Women's non-revenue sports are better funded than men in an attempt to balance out football.
you keep mentioning you know someone. your handful of outliers do not represent the entire college student population. but congrats to your private school buddies.

What were you trying to accomplish with the original question? You want the AD to fund non-athletes or what? It’s better than the money going to the fired coaches fund.
Someone getting a $500 scholarship is still "on scholarship". Now if you want to discuss Full Ride Scholarships that's a completely different animal.
Fine I’ll hold your hand. 73% of TCU freshman get merit based scholarships. Want to know how? Just by simply applying to the school, that’s it. That’s all they have to do. It’s like that for every legit private school I know. Almost no one pays full cost unless they are way below standards.

Can confirm. My daughter with her very mediocre 2.8ish GPA was offered an "academic" scholarship to a small private college (Monmouth) when she was looking around. It was equal to about $18k iirc.
Love my daughter but she was anything but a standout student at that time (anxiety and other mental health stuff). She got better and now has a Masters!
You're correct. I worked with the swim team at ISU and they had nearly 30 on the roster but I wanna say like 15ish scholarships. A few walk-ons like any sport, and then the coaches spread those scholarships around by quarters and halves.
It was sort of like those graphics where you get $15 to make your best lineup, then it's tiers of players at $5, $4, etc.
