Looks like Brock is done for the night already. Just got to play the opening drive.

Will have to turn my attention to the Jets game. :)

Is the NFL package more widely available this year beyond what it has been in the past (DirectTv or whatever it was through)? Would definitely consider this year between SF and the Jets.

I have regular Spectrum cable and saw they have a sports package for $7/month including NFL Net but I just can't believe it's that cheap.

Seems like starting QBs rarely get more than a series until maybe the last pre-season game when they may play a half.
As much as they have invested in these guys, it's all about getting them to the starting line healthy.

Unless the NFL has changed the rules this season, few of the starting QB's will even be dressed for the last pre-season game, let alone play. I doubt Mahomes is going to be getting any snaps next week, they know what he can do. Purdy is different, they want to see if he is healthy enough to play.

Here is the link. Can get it through Youtube or Youtube TV this year:

Brock was just really sharp tonight, 4/5 and had a really good first drive. Running game just sputtered out inside the 10.

I think most of the intelligent fans of SF, John Lynch the GM, and Kyle Shanahan know Brock is their best quarterback. We all know he does not have the biggest arm, but man is he accurate. He always places it in a spot where only his guy can get it, and he is so good at throwing guys open and giving them yac with an in stride throw.

His accuracy got him the SF starting job, just so sharp. Trey Lance to me is a great option if the goal is to go 5-12, not the best intelligence and just poor awareness and accuracy.

I wouldn't go this far but he does generally put it in spots and seems to be the best fit for what SF wants to do.

Ya. He’s accurate, but he’s not Aaron Rodgers. What he really has going for him is how well he processes what the D is showing and then makes quick and aggressive decisions. He maxes out play calls and has one of the best play callers in the league as a coach.

Having absolute studs around him helps and it's baffling that it's not a more common formula vs. loading your money onto one player to carry the load (Rodgers).

It’s definitely makes for a better ‘team’ to have more of a point guard at QB, but I think it’s a really difficult dynamic to get to as a GM and a gamble. Are you drafting a late round QB every third year and constantly starting someone on a rookie deal? You could strike out on a lot of picks. Plus the GM can look like an idiot when you have a great D and weapons and don’t have a QB to make it work. And eventually if you get a good QB at low dollars, they will want paid on their next contract, which blows up the whole thing.

QB is the most important player on a team, and the hardest position to play at a high level in sports today. If you are a Allen, Mahomes or Rodgers, you want to be paid what you consider to be full value for your skills. There just are not too many teams that have won a championship without having a high level QB, and if you have one, you are going to do everything in your power to keep him. Which means paying him 30 to 40 million a year. It's the price of success, hell, look what the Vikings are paying Cousins, and he is a little above average, but the best they can get.

That is what makes Purdy special right now, he is playing at a high level, and is dirt cheap for the next two seasons after this. The 49ers have the ability to use that money that they are not paying Purdy and go out and get better players at other positions and pay them well. It's not going to last forever, the closer Purdy gets to FA, the more money the 49ers will be forced to pay him if he continues to produce at a high level.

Nobody is playing their known starters for more than a couple of series in the preseason. The only thing that can possibly come from it is an injury that cripples the team's season before it even begins.
They did change their rules in that there's one less preseason game. So next week is it and then they have the first weekend in September off. I would expect that a lot of starters get a quarter or so this coming weekend. And then the rest of the game they'll be trying to decide who makes rosters. It used to be that they had multiple cut deadlines to get the roster down to 53, but now it is all just one day. 8/29 is going to be a busy day.

It’s POSSIBLE to win a superbowl with a game manager/lots of talent around, but it’s a lot easier to do if you have a superstar QB.

From 2000-now, the QBs winning super bowls have been:
Kurt Warner
Trent Dilfer
Tom Brady
Brad Johnson
Tom Brady
Tom Brady
Big Ben
Peyton Manning
Eli Manning
Big Ben
Drew Brees
Aaron Rodgers
Eli Manning
Joe Flacco
Russel Wilson
Tom Brady
Peyton Manning
Tom Brady
Nick Foles
Tom Brady
Pat Mahomes
Tom Brady
Matt Stafford
Pat Mahomes

Honestly, Purdy is probably only more naturally talented than.. dilfer, Flacco, maybe foles and Johnson?

But natural talent is one thing. Brady worked his way from being above average to the GOAT. Purdy absolutely can improve. It’s pretty obvious he improved a ton from his college days to the pros.

Most Super Bowl winners do so with a superstar QB. Now we have to hope Purdy can develop into a superstar. He seems to fit the Brees mold (really smart player from a historically underachieving Midwest engineering school with incredible processing but not necessarily the strongest arm in the world).

Man, NFL twitter is brutal. Every time someone posts something about Purdy, people come out of the woodwork bashing him...saying he's mid, my mom can make that pass, checkdown merchant. I get that he's in a good system and doesn't have a big arm, but he's making it work AND coming off a major surgery. Then there's the Trey Lance apologists who jump at every opportunity to say that their guy isn't getting a fair shake.

Would Purdy be good without a pro-bowl RB, WR and TE? Maybe not, but he's also going to be in the league a long time even if it's as a backup down the line.
