I thought in 2019, at least to start the game Campbell did not play conservatively against Iowa. Early in the game, they had a trick play that scored from deep, the stadium was going crazy. Then we put together another good drive and had really Iowa off balance until Purdy fumbled at the 19 yard line. Despite that turnover, we had the momentum and were taking it to them, but then the weather delay happened and it gave Iowa a chance to regroup and settle down. Also in 2017, with a gunslinger like Parker, and skill guys like Butler, Lazard, and Montgomery, we were only conservative late in the 4th, Campbell trying to protect the lead, but before that we attacked them all over the field.
I had forgotten '19. How we lost that game I've no idea. And that trick play was beautiful. I agree with those examples.

The last 3 kind of stand out to me as conservative play calling. And losing to them in '21 at home with all the talent we had back, GameDay in Ames... That one still stings.

Obviously we need to fire Campbell. Have a massive buyout. Massive player transfers. Then spend millions more for a replacement. :jimlad:

Campbell has made many changes. Young team. We will get better.
And yet there are a number of people on the board that would do exactly that. Of course joefrog and the crew don’t go to games, don’t donate to the Cyclone Club and don’t donate to the collective. The only thing they know how to do is complain. Still waiting on who they would hire to replace Campbell.

This! The team is going to get better, it basically has to with the inexperience we have at key positions.

If we’re sitting here at 3-1 in two weeks (I think we have a good shot to do so), we’re probably all pretty happy.
Completely agree. It’s not like Iowa kicked ISU’s butts on the field. We threw a pick six and had a FG blocked. Outside of those two plays, the teams were essentially even.

Having said that, I would say the chances of winning against both Ohio and OSU are less than 50/50. It’s possible, but I am not overly confident it will happen.

I'm not sure I'd call the 2001 win at Ohio "convincing." That one was in very real danger of being an all-timer.

Up 31-14 after 3
blocked Yelk FG
Ohio TD (31-21, 11:56)
Seneca INT
Ohio TD (31-28, 5:25)

It took Ennis to salt away the last 5 minutes. 9 carries for 44 yds on the final possession, including a 6-yarder on 4th and 3.

I only disagreed because I played in it and it was never in doubt.

It’s probably less than 50/50 that we win both but I feel confident that we can and will.

OSU also has a sneaky tough game against South Alabama this week. Only 7.5 point favorites at home.

Oklahoma State in my eyes is pretty even with us. They have not looked very good. I'll take us at home.

Sorry can’t justify the oh we play the same style so we will take the 1-7 VS Iowa and get wins elsewhere. Many other coaches find a way to beat similar teams all the time. Nobody is asking them change the offense for 1 week, but the game plan and approach surely can with the playbook they have. You make Iowa seem like they are peak Alabama in this podcast. Yea it’s a good defensive but it’s a slightly above average football team.
Couldn't agree more. I love Blum, but I about turned it off the third time I heard "They do this to everybody". Iowa is a good program with a great defense. They are not unbeatable, and many teams find ways to give them better games than ISU has under Campbell.

Most teams I see in general don't seem to lack urgency with the ball.

I fully expect that Iowa's defense ranking will fall next year when they no longer have one of the easiest schedules in P5 (P4) football.

I also expect their W-L record will slip as well.

They have been the beneficiary of an easy schedule for decades.

I'm stating that this is Kirk's last year coaching. He has the easy schedule which will push him over 60%, He most likely has a job lined up for baby ferentz with the stupid point rule they came up with. He just doesn't have anything for his Son inlaw unless king douche is available.

Add in the 2017 to the 'games we should have won'. I believe we were up 10 with like 8 min left. Park then threw an interception to a D-lineman inside of our 20. Defense also gave up a 40+ TD on screen pass in the final 2 minutes.

2018 - our opening drive went well. Got inside the 1 yard line for a 4th down play, which we were going to go for, but did not due to a false start. Kempt got hurt in the 1st quarter and Noland came in, offense sputtered once Kempt left the game.

2019 - Eisworth had an opportunity to intercept a pass in the endzone late in the game, but dropped it. Iowa kicked a FG that ended up being the game winner a few plays later.

2021 - Turnovers. Probably the most disappointing performance of all the games.

I don't think Iowa turned the ball over during any of those games I mentioned (including 2016). Unreal stat.

Losing to Iowa every year is extremely frustrating, but not the end all be all of a successful season. I would much rather lose this game and then go on to win 5+ conference games and be top half of the Big 12. This team is still very young and should keep improving on offense with more reps. They won't be elite by any means, but if they can keep improving throughout the year and show signs of putting it together, you have a great nucleus for next season. If we lose Saturday to Ohio, then I will start to panic and potentially start looking ahead to basketball and wrestling season..

2019 is the worst loss against Iowa since we were up 14-6 in the 2nd half and weren't able to hold them off. Rose dropped an INT inside the Iowa 30 and we allowed Stanley to scramble for 27 yards on 3rd and 26 from his own 10 yard line. Both of those plays would have sealed the win.

It's only one of the games, but I think that win would have entirely changed the narrative of this series for Campbell.

Looks like we’ve moved from the “we can go 6-6” stage of ISU football grief to the “you don’t waste your money on the same things I do so you don’t get to talk” and the “who could we get that would be better” stages of ISU football grief in a single post lol.

I’ve been around a long time. When that feeling starts creeping in it’s never usually wrong.
