Has anyone purchased a new vehicle lately, the prices are off the wall.

This is just crazy. Seriously crazy

"The percentage of drivers spending upward of $1,000 a month on payments jumped to an all-time high of 17.1% in the second quarter of 2023 compared to 16.8% in the first quarter, according to a report by Edmunds"
Something will eventually crack. It always does. Then the economy restarts. It always does.

I've often wondered wondered if the auto industry would not eventually migrate to more of an order ahead system. Way less inventory cost and will get shipped to right location the first time. They should be willing to take less margin. Eventually the consumer will realize if they want new they have to plan ahead.

Last spring a couple of salesmen (different dealerships/vehicle brands) said they look for it to eventually go this route.

I got super lucky with the timing of our car purchases. We have a 14 Focus and a 19 pacifica (both purchased new). With covid we drove a lot less than usual, so both are under 80k miles. I'm planning on running those into the ground. The focus has been a tank with zero unexpected maintenance. The pacifica hasn't been much worse (1 electrical issue fixed early on).

The pacifica was somewhere around 37k in july of 2019. From what I've heard it would be ~55k for the same van today.

Before kids, my wife and I would buy a new vehicle every 5 years and run them each 10 years. That cycle will for sure stop with these 2 vehicles. Hopefully the next vehicle purchase will either be electric (sedan?) to replace the Focus or a used car for the oldest kid (in 8 or so years)

I found the exact truck (‘22 model) I wanted in fall of ‘21 and ordered it. Took delivery in January and absolutely love it.

I was really hesitant to buy new due to the cost, but I discovered a loyalty program Tread Lightly that allowed a significant discount off the purchase price.

We bought a new Civic earlier this summer for our son, half the trouble was just finding dealerships with inventory that weren't spoken for before they even arrived. I definitely realized quickly there was little point even looking at used, used car prices were insane.
That’s what I was shocked to find. People listing 2-3 year old used cars with 20-30k miles for the same price as a new car. Bought a Crosstrek earlier this year. Took about 6 weeks to get what I wanted, but not a big deal.

Son turns 16 soon and has been looking for something under 10k. As long as you aren’t too locked into makes and models there are decent cars out there.

But to the point above was art a place listing a 2020 RAV4 with 30k miles for over $34k. WTF?

We have a 2015 Rav. Bought in 2016 for $24k (If I remember correctly)

Seeing listings with higher miles for $20k all these years later.

I'd be fun to pick up a Bolt with the government incentive, but they are all listed above sticker. Which is straight garbage.

Read thread and immediately walked into garage to tell the Das Audi he'll be around for awhile.

Looks like that purchase in spring 2016 is going to be my last easypeasy auto purchase. Was a used 2015 A5 dealership car that one of the managers had. Only 4K miles and priced to sell because it was a coupe and everyone wants an SUV, pickup or mini-van. Was also surprised when they gave me good trade in value on my 12-year old A4. The worst part of this thread for me might be color selection. I am notoriously fussy about the car color.

Maybe my next car will just be Uber rides. Wonder what that would cost per year versus buying, fueling and insuring a new $50,000 car?

Just finished putting new plugs and ignition caps in my A6. Did new brakes/rotors 2 years ago. Mine is sticking around awhile.

I worked with a person who only rented cars. They'd deliver her a new one every couple of weeks. She claimed it was cheaper than buying.

She had no maintenance costs. Always a newer vehicle that was clean and ready to go.

Hopefully a recent Subaru?

I had a 2012 Forester crap out on me with engine/head gasket issues and I guess it was a trend. Took a chance on a 2018 Forester on too good of a deal to pass up in fall '20 and so far so good but I'm nervous as the miles tick up.

I hate cars.
It's a 2023 Forester. Love it so far

I know we get cheap rentals through Hertz for work so maybe it pencils out.

My friend drives a 1997 Honda Accord so he rents all the time for any trips outside the DSM Metro.

Hopefully dealerships get the axe soon. Car companies can make more money at the same time consumers pay a lower price if we get rid of them.

Prices are high because car supply is down due to slowed production rates of new vehicles compared to pre-pandemic. Car companies are essentially colluding to ensure inventory remains constrained so their margins remain fat as long as possible

Unbelievable, but I got up this morning, turned on Game Day, and started looking over the allocation sheet for the vehicle that we are looking for. Found exactly what i was looking for in Columbia S. Carolina. Got the dealership on the phone, and they said it was available and just came in yesterday. They asked where I was calling from and when I told them Iowa, they said they like to sell local. I told them my son lives right outside of Columbia, and could he come down for a test drive. Call my son, he was free and drove down, tested the vehicle, and we started haggling over price. They started out at 75K which did include taxes, I told them we cannot afford to pay that much, we went back and forth and finally agreed on 68K, tax included out the door price. Son put down a thousand dollars to hold it, and I will fly down on the 25th to sign all the paperwork, see the grandkids and drive it home.

Glad this is over, and it's been a pain in the butt, but at least gave me something to do, and now I can sit down and watch the Clones and have a cold one.

last bought the wife's main vehicle our '20 Palisade new in '19, got it for a little under MSRP at the time due to discounts, currently at 74k mi on it and just had a full service (all fluids) and brakes done on it. Just replaced my old work beater '03 Grand Prix with 170k mi on it with a '17 Buick Lacrosse with at the time 75k mi (84k now) on it in May. Got it for a good deal for it being almost fully loaded, missing the moonroof which I don't care for anyway and the adaptive suspension group. both of them should last us for a decade still. the Palisade to get a comparable trim has gone up a bit, but the Lacrosse I wouldn't be able to replace now at all with every manufacturer besides the luxury brands dropping the full size sedan.
