Has anyone purchased a new vehicle lately, the prices are off the wall.

We bought one a couple weeks ago, and yeah, there was some sticker shock. Our 3 year old Jeep (32,000 miles) had to have the engine replaced (in warranty at least), which took about a month and a half. When we got it back, the main LED screen on the dash started going out and we were just done with it. Traded it for a Subaru.

Smart decision... Jeep's are crap. Don't understand why everyone buys them... do a little research.

Not exactly sure.
Hopefully a recent Subaru?

I had a 2012 Forester crap out on me with engine/head gasket issues and I guess it was a trend. Took a chance on a 2018 Forester on too good of a deal to pass up in fall '20 and so far so good but I'm nervous as the miles tick up.

I hate cars.
How many miles do you have? If you take care of it, I wouldn’t even blink an eye of taking it anywhere with 250k miles or less.

I hope all car companies move to the Tesla model, pick it all out online and they deliver it to your driveway. The only thing at the showroom is demo models.
Do you get to test drive it and check it out before handing the check to the delivery driver? Something with 50k Mike’s on it could have issues and have some dings that you can’t see on the pictures.

85,000.

There's no indications of problems, but I keep waiting for that weird shaking that was the gasket issues in the previous car.

was hoping to buy a truck in early 2020 and that went to hell fast. three years later you can actually find trucks now, but they are way to expensive. Which is odd because every other commercial about trucks and it always seems to be "Truck Month" lol
Now I am seeing they are laying off, having supply issues and the Strikes are in play.
i may just have to stick with what I have and be ok with that. Glad I am not needing something the past couple years.

Put a bunch of money in my little car last week because there’s no way I’m gonna make payments on new car right now.
Wise move. Driving my wife's 2011 Equinox with 150K miles. Put new brakes, tires, cat converter in it last year. Reliable. Nice ride. Ice cold ac. Just uses oil which is common with that engine. So $7 of oil every 1000 miles fine by me. Takes me back to my high school car.
The look people give me when checking my oil at a gas station. I've had people come ask me if they can help (make a call for me i guess). When I explain just checking the oil they say "really, why do you need to do that. I wouldn't even know how to do that"
And I've always had a new car about every 6 years. I'm not feeling the urge.

I've often wondered wondered if the auto industry would not eventually migrate to more of an order ahead system. Way less inventory cost and will get shipped to right location the first time. They should be willing to take less margin. Eventually the consumer will realize if they want new they have to plan ahead.

We bought a new Civic earlier this summer for our son, half the trouble was just finding dealerships with inventory that weren't spoken for before they even arrived. I definitely realized quickly there was little point even looking at used, used car prices were insane.

I did a deeeeeep dive on that issue when we bought our new one; the issue was (more or less*) limited to a few years of production. They remedied the gasket issue in 2013 or 14 if memory serves.

*Subarus will tend to have more than average head gasket failures due to their design, but outside of specific years it’s not a widespread problem

I think Subarus are decent cars, but they have had head gasket issues for 30 years or more. The crazy thing is that they have been putting that 2.5 liter opposing 4 in cars that whole time. You would think they would have figured it out by now. (I know those engines are not all the same, but they all have head gasket issues.)

I always buy used cars, but even that has gotten to be expensive. Can't believe the number of cars out there that people want $3-4K for with a blown engine or a transmission going out.

Just spent around two grand on wife’s 2010 caravan with 130,000 miles. Just tough to justify a new vehicle right now and now throw the strike in on top of that. It’s gonna get worse before it gets any better.

I would think so too. I do think the legacy companies (not Tesla et al) are constrained by their historical models of business/supply/manufacturing, so it isn’t easy for them to just “flip a switch” to the Tesla model.

I think used car prices are insane too. Anything 4 wheel or AWD is overpriced. I was looking at used Tacomas last summer and ended up getting a good price on a new one so I bought it. Used with lower miles that were two years old were almost the same price as a new one.

After we sold our handicapped van last month, I started looking for a new vehicle to purchase, we wanted an SUV, really like the Toyota brand, so we have been looking at the new Grand Highlander. We went into a couple Toyota dealerships figuring we could order a new one, and then pick it up when it arrived, we are not in a hurry. Toyota does not take orders for new vehicles; they are allocated so many a couple of times a month and the wait time for the vehicle we want is 6 months up to a year or more. So, I started calling dealerships seeing what they had and could I purchase from them. Most dealers have a minimum $3,000 to $10,000 mark up on the Grand Highlander, or they want to put you on a waiting list, and will do so with a $500 refundable deposit, and then there is no guarantee that they can get you what you want, it's all luck of the draw.

Luckily being retired, I have plenty of time on my hands, and have been scouring the allocation list and phoning the dealers that are going to get the vehicle that we want. It's crazy out there, some dealers refusing to sell me a vehicle because they only sell within a 300-mile radius, others jacking up the price. I never thought finding a vehicle and willing to pay cash was so difficult.
We ordered a Toyota sienna mini van in March of 2022 and got it December 2022. Took forever but we were extremely lucky on price, dealership offered us $10,000 over what we paid before we even left the lot just cuz they were that short on inventory

My 89 YO mother had a 2016(?) Honda Fit last year that had less than 30k miles. She decided to quit driving and you'd think she was holding some rare pink diamond. I was happy to find someone in the family that needed a car.
