I love ya man, but...

You are leaving yourself wide open on this one! Haha

I will defer to your judgement, of course. But we might benefit from giving a few more OL players some reps. It couldn't hurt. Don't you think?
Shows you how much I know. I just wish we could find a way to make the OLine a little more effective.

I liked our play calling a lot more than the Ohio game...that said, it's hard to take anything away from this win because it was

a) at home and
b) Oklahoma State is probably the worst or second worst in the conference

I hope the Cyclones prove me wrong against OU....I'm not expecting a win by any means but being more aggressive on the play calling would be nice. Running game is still non-existent.
OSU is bad, hands down. BUT,

Before this weekend, OSU was allowing 20 ppg. 9 teams in the Big12 are allowing 20 ppg or more currently post week 4 and ISU plays 5 of the 9, with OSU being 1 one of the remaining 4. My point to this is ISU will have opportunities to win games, possibly even 6. Whether they take advantage of those opportunities remains to be seen, but I feel like I can confidently say OSU will not be the worst defense ISU sees this year

The possibilities are truly limited. We will win or lose our remaining games.

Watching a bit now on a lunch break.

Jackson is the best receiver especially at getting downhill after the catch.

I think Baylor is worse. Houston too, probably, but we don't get to play them. Hoping we can steal 4 wins between Kansas, BYU, Cincinnati, Baylor, and TCU. Not really giving us a shot vs OU, Texas, or Kansas State. Texas is possible upset pick, depending on what happens between now and then to them and their morale. If they suffer a loss or two they may not want to get off the bus for a mid-November game in Ames. For now it's a penciled in loss. I don't think we stand a chance @ K State or this week @ OU unfortunately. Rocco gets his first true hostile environment in Norman, and for some reason I am feeling vibes of 2002 when we went into Norman ranked #9 and had a Heisman hopeful QB leading the charge, only to get spanked embarrassingly on national TV. This OU team isn't as good as that one in '02, but you could probably say the same about this Iowa State team vs the '02 ISU.

It’s a bummer we miss Texas Tech, WVU, and Houston. Those, along with ISU and OSU, are probably the worst teams of the Big 12

Like I said in a previous post.........if the 2017 version of Matt Campbell shows up to call the game this weekend, I give ISU a decent chance of winning. I really do.

Now if last year and this year's version of Matt Ferentz show up.............ISU has no chance.

And if Matt Campbell and not Matt Ferentz had been coaching against Iowa and Ohio, IMO there is a very good chance ISU is 4-0 going into Norman.

They probably would have thrown the ball more against Iowa and Ohio if they would have liked our match-ups better. Thats what the game plan is based on. I don't buy the argument that Campbell is afraid to open the offense up, the staff just knows we don't have the players to be successful playing that way against most teams.

I call bs on the bolded. Daniel Jackson is just one example that the WR room might be deeper and more talented than what many fans have realized. I think it's the coaches (CMC) reluctance to get away from the game plan and scheme of using multiple TE sets and heavy personnel the truest reason we have not seen more production out of the WR room. I think it is an area where the coaching has really screwed up sans having Kolar and Allen on the team. Players, formations, plays, getting preached but not practiced.

Defense had a bad game. Bowman over threw 3 wide open recievers for tds. Lots of wide open recievers all over the field yesterday. Leaving Bacon on Nixon without safety help was inexcusable.

I really only recall one egregious break away like you are referring to here. #5 Purchase had a rough day.

At the end of the day....we won........
Worst OKY ST. team I've seen in a long time....but.....we won!!

Dumb question.....
There were 2 songs I really liked after the Juicy Wiggle....any idea what they are called...
Would like them on my play list....

I honestly thought they were a tick better than the team that beat us with Gunnar Gundy and one-armed Spencer Sanders last year. They always have good young talent at the skill positions somehow. Lost a few receivers in the portal last year, but appear to be fine at that position IMO. That RB Ollie Gordon II is only a SO, he will be one to monitor the next couple years.

I am probably hardcore drinking the Koolaid here, but OU did not look that good. They needed 3 turnovers to beat a Cincy team that lost to Miami OH. We will have by far the best defense they have faced all year. I do not anticipate winning again in Norman, however, ISU has been a tough out for OU the last few years, and I fully expect us to give them a game, if the offensive gameplan is similar to this one. If its back to the Ohio gameplan, give me OU by a landslide
I am a bit nervous about the game this week. I have chalked it up as a loss in my head already, so I don't think I can be disappointed necessarily.

Have not watched a single snap of OU this year. Are they loaded with 4 and 5 star talent on the D-Line? If they are, I expect a long, futility laden day for the offense. Could be as ugly as Iowa looked vs Penn State. Worried about a repeat of the '02 game, not that I think OU will go off for 49 points against our defense.

Tech is a weird animal. The talent on that roster alone should put them in the top half or even third of the conference. They might finish with the worst record based on what we've seen so far.

Here's my dump of thoughts:

1) Gameday atmosphere - MUCH improved. I've been critical of the gameday experience since I went to WVU 2 years ago. They managed the crowd so much better than we did back then, and this past Saturday was the first time I thought we did a great job. We played hype music at the right times and let it go right up to the snap (just like WVU did). The band was actually rocking much better than I remember as well. The crowd was far from a sellout (weather, etc) but was as pretty darn loud when it needed to be. Concessions were super smooth - probably the fastest concessions I've ever experienced. Entrance was no problem. Grade A from Jamie.

2) Our coaches did not have a great day. There were a number of mistakes that fall on coaching. I'll give them a C-. It was glaringly not good.
2a) The play where we were going to go for it on 4th and short (I think in the 1st qtr). You could tell they were trying to get a play called, but communication wasn't good enough to go ahead with it. I'm not saying the delay was bad (it wasn't). But you could tell that CMC wasn't happy with the inability to get a play in to attempt that 4th and short.
2b) The long TD where Caleb Bacon was trying to cover their RB. It was super easy to see exactly how that play was going to go down before the snap. They motioned the RB out of the slot to the far sideline, when #50 went with him, it was obvious. It could have been an execution problem on the D where the safeties were supposed to shift in that case, but either way the D was not setup for that play. So possibly Heacock, possibly Fryler?
2c) Why in gods name do we show our formation after a timeout? There were at least 2 occasions where after a timeout, we'd line up for a play with 20-30 seconds on the tv timeout clock. FFS just stay in a huddle until the ref winds the clock - don't give their defense all the time in the world to line up how they want.
2d) Don't punt the ball with 20+ seconds on the clock when seemingly the previous 3 plays were all about killing the clock. That was really dumb and is on the coaches.
2e) There was a play earlier in the game where Becht changed the play at the line to a run play on a 3rd down. The defense knew exactly what was going to happen. That's again on the coaches. If you're going to audible to a run, it can't be that obvious. Now to give credit, we did use the counter to that later in the game and it worked beautifully.
2f) there was a sequence when we had a TV timeout. Heacock got the entire team together in a huddle. CMC was obviously chatting with the coaches in the box. I don't know if it was necessarily a bad thing, but it was interesting that if you didn't know, you'd think Heacock was the head coach at the time. Yes, we were on defense - but it was both offense and defense in the huddle. Best case scenario, CMC was working out some of the issues mentioned above with the coaches upstairs.

3) Norton's injury. I'm calling BS that it was a stinger. His reaction was that of someone who knows he's injured and will have a long recovery. I've seen it from many people who for example have gone through an ACL reconstruction only to injure it again. It's possible it's not as bad as Norton thought, but I personally would be surprised to see him in the next few weeks. It absolutely looked like a significant shoulder injury.

4) Daniel Jackson was the biggest difference in this game compared to the rest of the season. Noel had a good game too (but he did have 1 drop), but having Jackson was a big difference. On his TD catch he had a FILTHY move at the line that made his defender fall down. He also had a number of nice routes to find space. If defenses are going to take away the downfield TE and Noel, it's huge to have Jackson step up to be a 3rd option.

5) Becht IS the next Brock Purdy. I know many are going to balk at this, but I'm comfortable saying it. Purdy might have more wiggle and has the pump fake, but Becht might actually be more accurate. He's at least as good at seeing the field and is at least as accurate as Purdy was his freshman year. Becht probably even has a quicker release and a touch better arm strength. Regardless of who has the edge in specific categories, Becht IS 100% as good as Purdy was his freshman year at the QB position. A guy at the WVU game 2 years ago was lamenting that WVU didn't recruit Becht (his dad played at WVU). That guy was right.

6) We're missing 4 of the 6 players who got caught up in the gambling deal. Grant Treiber, Isiah Lee, DeShawn Hanika, Jirehl Brock. All would help with leadership and depth. Sauser I don't think would have played, but who knows with the OL.

7) Special teams is 1000x better than it ever has been under CMC. Yes we missed a couple FG's last week - I don't care, it's still that much better. There are still some details to be worked out there, especially snap/hold on the FG unit. But seriously what a huge breath of fresh air to NOT be scared of kickoffs, punts, punt return, etc.

8) Coach Nate S. called a pretty good game. I loved the RB screen, even though the execution wasn't great. Same with the QB run on 4th and short even though it didn't work. Flea flicker, hell freaking yes (by the way, that 100% should have been defensive holding on that play on BOTH cornerbacks). Again I don't care that it didn't work, but when you're so predictable that you may as well be giving the opposition your play calls, you HAVE to make these types of counter calls. Some won't work out and that's okay. It's like taking a deep shot that doesn't work. Even if it doesn't work, the defense has to think about it and that can open up the inside run (that we need to use super sparingly).
Lots of agree with this.

I'm not quite ready to say Rocco = Brock. But I have been calling him a "poor mans Brock Purdy" for a few weeks now. Maybe by November I will say "upper middle class mans Brock Purdy".

WRT special teams... you gotta win 2 of 3 phases of the game to win. CMC basically didn't even try to win on ST until last year, and it really did cost him a lot of games. Now if ISU is up against a tough defense or a juggernaut offense, (or your defense just has a bad day) you can maybe win on ST and still win the game.

Fair, balanced and knowledgeable post. Good job. You are correct on Norton. Unfortunately, I have extensive stinger experience and I find it highly unlikely that was a stinger.
We thought it looked like a dislocated shoulder. Source - my daughter and gf have both dislocated their shoulders and they both thought the way his arm was hanging looked exactly like that. Whatever it is, hope he heals fast, they need him.

No more defense optional stuff going on.

Clock management with a 2 TD lead in the 4th quarter was really bad. We ran a hurry up QB sneak with 30 seconds on the play clock and then punted with 22 seconds on the play clock. Not to mention there were other plays where we snapped the ball with more than 10 seconds on the play clock. This is not what winning teams do.

Both TX and OU seem to have legit defenses. The Texas DL will be the best we face all year, much better than OU or Iowa even. Both are somewhat susceptible to over the top passing, however, our lack of ability to run and the lack of separation our WRs get can mitigate that. It's going to be critical we keep seeing development as the year goes on.

Tech & WV are higher than us in Sagarin. Tech is higher in SP+ too, they are MUCH better than their record. Buzzsaw game at Wyoming and fought Oregon tooth and nail in Lubbock.

Houston is warm wet dumpster juice though.

I know you have been down on our WR room, but have you seen any reason to change your viewpoint on that over the past few weeks? Huge game from Noel and Daniel Jackson breaking out a bit being indicators of us perhaps being wrong or at least a bit mistaken?

I think there are absolutely reasons to be hopeful. I tried to preface my prior comments with the context that route trees, play calling, development, and separation were our problems, not purely a raw talent deficit. While I do think we lack some depth in the WR room, the route trees were a bit more crisp against OSU and the play calling was clearly better. I'd like to see continued development because quite frankly I don't think even the coaches know what we have for talent with that group because they haven't been developed over the past few years.

The staff loves the idea of establishing the running game to open up the passing game as this also helps limit possessions and control the game. However, I think there is some recognition that we may need to switch things around and get some 10-15 yard passing game established to open up the run game. We just don't have the line to come out of the gate and run up the middle 2 out of every 3 downs.

Regarding 2C, I think it is because it also allows us to see how the defense is going to line up.

Regarding 3, my first impression was broken collarbone with the way he was holding his arm (been there, done that).
i second the broken collarbone prediction (also been there, done that)

WV is better than I thought; I also thought Brown was on his way out.

Look at their schedule - they still have Cincy, BYU, and OkSt at home - should get 2/3 there. Road games - at Houston, but also TCU, UCF, OU, and Baylor. Might get Houston. So lets say 3-5 rest of the way.
Avoids Texas and KSU, that's nice.

Tech otoh... I still think they are a good team, but their schedule is a lot lot tougher. Even getting to 6-6 will be tough; they play both KSU and Texas. Have to go TO BYU.
