They keep games close into the 4th quarter, and then they make a couple of key plays and avoid the big mistake.
But they didn’t make the plays. They relied on MSU to make the plays. You can’t count on a 15 yard punt. And then off of that 15 yard punt, the tipped pass floats in the air and is an easy interception for MSU’s LB and he somehow botches it.

The defense forced key three and outs. They benefitted from a shank for the first field goal. Then on the second the special teams delivered a punt return for a TD. I would say that was a big play in a game where neither team could score.

And down the stretch it was MSU making the big errors and dumb penalties. Iowa avoids the costly mistakes in crunch time.

Gotta get over that 25-point mark, that’d a no-brainer.

I mean, actually making it a two-score game is a no-brainer, too, every coach in the nation is going to kick the FG there.
Ya. I know. But I am still gonna rag on them for it. The announcers wondered about it out loud, when it was obvious what was happening. And mentioned the 325 immediately after so it was definitely on their minds.

This is true. Whatever you think about Iowa getting lucky - and they get lucky more than just about any other football program in America - they also rarely make mistakes that hurt them when it really matters.

They got the punt return for a TD because the MSU punter kicked a line drive punt to the middle of the field away from his coverage. It would have been a joke had DeJean not housed that punt.

Not sure how anyone else feels, but this college football season so far is lacking in craziness. This week was a snooze fest of games for the most part. We need a weekend where there is some chaos.

Exactly. Iowa avoided the mistakes down the stretch, MSU didn't, and the hawks did just enough to take advantage. That to me is a great example of winning in the margins.

I blame the new clocking rules which have shortened games and limit comebacks/craziness.

Between NIL and realignment it's only going to get worse.

I think less parity and less craziness is the new normal. With NIL/portal and the “Power 2”, all the talent is concentrated in blue bloods or their conference mates.
