How to continue Jack Trice's legacy in future years?

Was there much said on the broadcast about Jack?

I haven’t watched the broadcast but all my sons were livid about how horrible it was.

Clueless about the game on the field and the legacy of Jack. Mentioned he died after a game but nothing about how. And the call of the game was flat out wrong frequently and all five of them concluded announcers were not there.

We have it recorded but after talking to them, not sure I want to bother.

Will add that Hawk social media is just loaded with dooshers making fun of the uniforms.

I think it’s probably just better to reflect on the amazing personal experience we had that day. Went early and walked around campus past the location of the funeral, visited the statue by Beardshear, and read everything in the display at the library. His widow’s letter in her handwriting gets me every time when she mentions the Campanile bells ringing three o’clock as he died. Went to the stadium early to see the players warming up and not missing anything pregame. Also to make sure we got those beautiful posters. Wonderful halftime by the band, so fun. Doesn’t Seneca always make things special, as well as Coach Mac? We always stay until the game is over and the band is done, and we had lots of company even though the game was not in question.

More Trice stripes! Loved the unis last week and hope to see them more. They'd look great when we go all black!

It may not be possible with current jersey cuts, but I've photoshopped the current standard uniforms with a very subtle - almost the same shade - full size stripes underneath the chest number.

We don't need an activist and wish that terminology didn't exist. Just a present day success story that had dedication and perseverance that would embody the Trice attitude expressed in his letter. Better if it wasn't an athlete since most college athletes will never see the pro ranks.

Because Jack was on the field as an equal with white players, some fans viewed him as an "activist" - the historical term was often "agitator." Think of the Mizzou letter saying Jack couldn't play because of the political question.

I ask, what was the political question?

It's what "uppity" Black activists such as Du Bois were calling for. Yes, dreaded equality for "the colored man." Some fans were upset. Why couldn't people keep politics out of sports. It wasn't the time or place.

Northern teams often had to bend to racist southern teams, because there was a legitimate question around the safety of their Black player, or because leaders didn't want to appear as if they were being activists. Appeasement and separation was better.

The tragic thing?

Black people often had to choose between being an activist and being killed for it, or appearing to endorse appeasement to save their lives. Jack knew he needed to do more for his race and he played without regard for his safety on the football field, so he could show the white race that he belonged, that he was an equal.

He died.

This is where I hope some ISU fans don't lose sight of the true historical meaning behind Jack's letter and only offer facile support.

I like the idea of having the first game of October always designated as the Trice game, home or away. And have it be just an alternate helmet. And then have a full retro uniform tribute game every five years.

And as for a helmet, what about a Trice stripe helmet alternate that has the Trice stripes chevron very large and at the front of the helmet and going way back kind of like the Michigan helmet design. Maybe it’d look bad but might just be cool. Can someone create that graphic?

I mocked up a bad version of one many months ago, will see if I can find it.

Alternatively, I think they could use white letters to spell AMES on the black helmet or cardinal helmet very easily

That is correct. All FS1 and FS2 crews are remote.

I do like the idea of having a Jack Trice Legacy game every once in a while. My Idea would be every 4 years. This allows every 4-year player to at least experience it once a college career. Though i wouldn't be mad at every 5 years. It would also be nice to make sure it is a night game but i know we don't have control over that.

Just wanted to add, I was at the game but supposedly they didn't talk about Jack's letter until the end of the game which probably most people tuned out by since the outcome was all but assured.

Yeah it was at a time that probably had the lowest viewership. Really disappointing

Not the “Jack died after a football game — so sad” version, but “Jack was a pioneer in the sport who dared to show up and do his best in a deeply, openly racist era, and paid for it with his life” version.

The KKK was alive and well and very active in Iowa during the 1920s. It wasn't just a southern thing.

I think it’d be cool to set up some type of scholarship program for former players who didn’t graduate for whatever reason to come back (either in person or virtual) to finish their degrees. Many young people are only focused on the athletics side of their time here and I worry once their eligibility is up, we don’t do enough to encourage them to finish school. Perhaps a dedicated position to reach out to those who played but didn’t finish their degree so those players are aware of their options.

He said they hadn't been talking about it and that the next step of the Trice legacy would be moving beyond athletics. On one side, I find this disappointing because it's our best story to tell and athletics is our most visible platform to tell it. On the other, I agree with Jamie in that the core of the story is racial equality and it should be embraced completely by the entire university, not just athletics. I hope that both things can happen. Some sort of annual/semi-annual recognition, and a more broad buy-in throughout the university.

It doesn't get said much, but it's impressive that a overwhelmingly white state/university has such a story of embracing racial issues and pushing them to the forefront. To me, its one part of what it means to be "Iowa Nice" - we accept people regardless of their race.

I also think there's a very clear fracture between the AD and the Jack Trice Foundation (AKA George Trice) and doing more to tell ALL of Jack's story is a way to work towards mending that.

I don't know any specifics about that, but at the same point don't doubt it. Jamie had nothing but good things to say about George Trice during the interview. I would assume that the situation absolutely is a tricky one to navigate.

I had that thought...with the announcers not local, i'm assuming they don't do near the prep work/time with staff. Maybe they do a zoom call the day before now? But I know when they are on site it seems they hang out around complex, watch practice, meet with sports info folks, etc.

I'm not an insider or anything but go comb through the JT Foundation Twitter account and it's not hard to pick up on.

A while back he posted a poll about that asked "If the 5-bars Iowa State uses did not stand for or honor Jack Trice specifically, would you still support or buy it?"

That felt to me like a thin veiled attempt to make a point about the proceeds going to the Foundation instead of the AD, or something along those lines.

I think this is the right take honestly…and fully agree with Kagavi’s take above. I think you want to be really careful about how you carry Jack’s legacy forward…and making him into something he wasn’t. Realistically Jack did very little on the football field (from a performance standpoint that is worth remembering or celebrating). It’s Jack’s character that stands out. He had an opportunity to do something others weren’t/didn’t and he full embraced it with courage. Then he was basically murdered…fully realizing the worst possible outcome of his courage. His courage should be fully celebrated and embraced by our school…and everyone really. We don’t want to turn it into what we did…or celebrate with a VEISHA type celebration (sorry Chris), because then it just hits the wrong note.

This is why I feel what Iowa has done my monetizing “The Wave” is so tragically stupid. The wave should be about kids who are sick (and sometimes dying)…taking a moment to honor them and the journey they’re on. It’s not about how awesome a fanbase is for waving.
