It's the technically correct application of a crappy rule. I think the NFL clarified their rule a while back where an invalid signal still has to be above the shoulders. One of those little details you hope your special teams coach goes over with your returners.

That’s what I think too, probably correct application of a silly/unfair rule.

I'm just saying if it was such a blatant error then why didn't any refs call anything on the field? Seems like they had no idea what was going on either and then decided to review it.
Why not let the play happen, then review it? Or are you a proponent of officials whistling plays dead that could be fumble-6s?

If it actually was a blown call it’s fine to blame the game on that even if Iowa had 8 turnovers and negative total yards of offense.

The thing is it seems like probably a weird but correct call.
Yeah it certainly sucks that it happened but he waved his hand which is all he has to do. So unless someone can point me to a rule that shows it's a blown call I don't get the "controversy" over the call. It wasn't a bad spot or a judgement PI or something

Watched the replay and it sure looked like 3 or 4 Gophers eased up until he spun out of the first tackle. DeJean was waiving like crazy. Heady play by him if he was trying to create confusion and try to get one over, he just got caught. Poor discipline by the Gophers to not finish out the play until the whistle, but blowing up the returner isn’t really an option.

Iowa was still in a good spot near midfield with the wind, plenty of time plus an timeout and a good kicker.

Was planning on watching a Big12 game but TCU is getting destroyed. Currently watching Tech and BYU. Might switch between that and FSU Duke

I think it was the right call but no one would have complained about it if it wasn't reviewed. Announcers could not understand why it was taking so long to review. It wasn't obvious at all to them. On the other hand in Houston /Texas game Houston clearly got the first down at the nine yard line. Announcers were immediately commenting on it but this critical obvious officiating error wasn't reviewed. So how these booth reviewers decide what they are going to review is definitely a legit question.
