On the Hawkeye messageboard...

"Iowa got robbed on that wave call. Your player was waving off the players."

The response: Ironic, eh?

He pointed with his right arm and is making a downward motion with his left, I've never seen anyone attempt to make a fair catch like that before. I guess it's the right call however ridiculous it might be, but his intent was clearly to get his own guy away from the ball.
Glad we're all on the same page now. Gain a single first down afterwards, and this is a non-issue.

They should get a special team coach to get those issues ironed out

He’s easily one of my favorite hawks of all time for that.
Agreed. It's marvelous. Plenty of players trade insults with opposing fan bases. McCabe does it with his own fans. It's just a beautiful statement on both him and all of Hawkeye fandom.

Hassel is the voice of reason nowadays

I can be the Hawk hate voice all around, I hate when people say this. Yeah, if you played better the game wouldn't have come down to the end. Every team in every close game ever can say that. But it did come down to that and doing enough to win is doing enough to win no matter what the margin is.

But I love that even a god awful offense would have been enough to win that game and they still came up short.

You are misunderstanding the rule they enforced. It was not a fair catch signal. If anyone says that, you would be correct, it was not..

It was an “invalid fair catch signal”, which is when the referees determine an arm motion may be confused as a fair catch signal, which puts the coverage team at a disadvantage.

That is enforced the same as a fair catch.
I'm not misunderstanding the call, it was probably the right one. I'm responding to posters on here who seem to think his intent was to call a fair catch or deceive the other team.

I don't think that was his intent at all, in this case it doesn't matter either way though on his intent.
