Milan looks like a more polished niang.

Ward/King/Biliew remind me of those good Baylor teams, where they always had like 5 dudes that are 6’6+ and long, and good athletes.

Lipsey looked good, Gilbert seems like a walking bucket/dribble drive.

I think there’s a bit of a drop off with Curtis Jones and more so with Pav, but they can definitely improve.

BRE played fine. If he gets 15 minutes a game it’ll be fine. He is a serviceable backup C/rim protector. He really isn’t that bad at the rim, although his FTs need to improve.

I’m excited to watch the improvement throughout the season- Monday was a GREAT start.

Well especially since this is only on ESPN+, all you do is rewind both to sync up at the same time. Normally the ESPN+ broadcast is delayed around the same amount that the Varsity broadcast is, 10 seconds.
I've done this with regular youtube tv broadcasts as well.

So both my TVs have a soundbar mounted on them with an HDMI cable into the TV.

Is there a way to use the soundbar with the phone or computer audio instead of the TV audio?

Maybe I can link them via Bluetooth to a phone or computer? I haven't tried so far.

I've always turned my sound system off and just played the radio broadcast via my phone to a bluetooth speaker. I bet you could link them via bluetooth to your phone, that would probably work great tbh

Have you used the Varsity app? I use that and then sync it up to the broadcast

Isn't it usually delayed by quite a bit?

Has Walters gotten better at mentioning the score occasionally?

I watched the game again last night.

A few thoughts about Pav's limited minutes...

-- he looks really small relative to the other scholarship Cyclones
-- didn't seem particularly quick or athletic... more on the UW-GB level than the Big 12 level
-- that being said, he impressed me with his PG skills
-- didn't seem to be exclusively hunting his shot... looked like he was trying to get others involved
-- he was getting guys good looks and easy bunnies under the basket... they were just missing shots

I don't know if he has much potential as an off-ball SG right now (even if he did hit 40% last year). He might be a serviceable PGs in spells, though, but I can imagine him being picked on as a defender by Big 12 coaches and bigger, faster guards. But he might offer enough quality PG play to be Lipsey's backup.

This is The Way.

It takes a little finagling, but once you figure it out its cake. Although one time I got the varsity feed behind too far, and couldn't get it back to real time (forwards). Might have been a me problem though.

Yeah for some reason I thought he was taller. He looked pretty small. Nice having him as a deep bench option at the moment. He is certainly a better ball handler than anyone we had on last year's team outside Tamin

Yep, around 10 seconds, which is why I rewind the ESPN+ broadcast back to sync up

Gotcha. If I do that the CF thread will make even less sense.

When I can only follow gamecasts/scores it's funny seeing ISU have like a 10 point lead throughout while you'd never know it in the Game thread.

1st half
ISU 34
Opponent 24

CF: This team may not win another game.

Month: December.

There's always one dude on the WRNL discord game thread who exclusively listens to it on the radio, so if there's a big play coming he'll let us know 10 seconds before it reaches tv lol

Pav's lack of size is apparent and was coming out of High School thus not having the P5 offers. Honestly he is small for Wofford compared to the upper classman and ended up being was very successful once he got on the floor.
Curious if he's a "gamer" and his feel for the game allows him to overcome his physical limitations. I know his shot will translate and want to see more of the rest of his game tonight hopefully early off the bench mixing with the starters. Game 2 is time for some lineup experimentation.

I wish there was an efficient way to just hear our p-x-p guys as the audio commentary.

John and Eric and CW are much more knowledgeable about the Cyclones and the Big 12.
They have apps for that.

After last night I think the defense will be much better than it has been.

How can I say that given the defensive prowess of last year's team? Those efforts came at the expense of a LOT of fouls as we had to play overly physical due to the natural lack of athleticism. This year we are both longer and more athletic and I saw no drop off in the intensity that's defined this team over the last few years.

There was talk Momcilovic could be a defensive liability but he performed much better than I expected on that side of the ball. With better effort and athleticism down low (more King, Ward and Bilieuw) and more length and athleticism on the wing (Gilbert, C Jones, Momc) we don't need to be as physical to play good defense. We have a greater ability to move with the opposition, disrupt passing lanes with our hands, and rotate/recover when beaten.

One of my biggest criticisms of Otz last year was his overuse of BRE at the expense of minutes that could/should have went to King and Ward. King in particular is a better offensive player, rebounder, and transition force while Jones was a better one on one defender on the block (largely due to his denial efforts). It was clear early last season King was a better player and deserving of more minutes. Additionally nobody on the team has a greater impact without the stats than Ward. The dude is all over the place defensively, blocking shots, altering shots, altering passes etc. Looking at the box score his stats look weak but when you watch him play you see how much he disrupts. I think he has a lot of potential on pick and rolls/lobs to the basket, something we saw at the end of last season.

Probably my favorite part of last night's game, outside of Momc's shot, was Otz demonstrating he intends to use zone as a weapon this year. We came out in a zone variation and it put potential of length and athleticism on full display. I thought Otz underutilized it last year, often with the wrong personal, and usually chose to deploy it only when we were in foul trouble. To be honest it often looked sloppy and poorly coached, which was disappointing as I felt Watson, Lipsey, Ward and Kal could have played some lights out zone. It looks like he recognized the potential of this lineup to play it and it should be both effective AND help keep us out if foul trouble. Something that was a massive issue last year.

Simply put, I think this team will give up more points but will maintain or possibly improve on its efficiency numbers. More points will mostly come from more possessions due to a massive increase in offensive efficiency. Combine that with less foul trouble, better transition play, and a deadly zone and I think this team will be better defensively.

This team has the potential to be the best Iowa State team since Fizer and Tinsley. Gilbert has a chance to be a star, on both end of the floor. Super pumped for the season.
Because everyone else had stats? :jimlad: Just messing with you.

Gilbert reminded me of all of those Baylor guards that seem so good at attacking the bucket full speed but can always get the soft-high-off-the-board layups over bigs.

Exactly. Those nimble types that could always get to the lane with speed and get to the basket through any opening.

My big question is: how did this win differ from our season opener against IUPUI last season? At the time, many including myself were over the moon about how we were able to finally just put away a non-conference opponent, even if they rank amongst the lowest of the low.

Foot in mouth, I take it all back… I’ll just sit back and enjoy this season as it unfolds. Massive win tonight, even if it was against “just Lindenwood”.
