My theory is that Bama's war-chest isn't anything close to what people think it is. Instead players were committing to Saban and his legacy. Now that that is gone, they expect money and it's not there.
Your theory is correct.

It’s been whispered by some the most plugged in college football insiders for the past year or so that there was a “Nick Saban discount” that players took to be coached by him.

Now they are saying it out loud and it’s kind proven to be true.

That being said. Bama has a large enough fan base that is passionate beyond comprehension that it wouldn’t surprise me if the raised some funds between now and the next portal window. If they get the funds they could go shopping.

While he is going to “put a QB” in the NFL, did he and his staff really develop Penix? Penix was a household name already while he was at Indiana. Granted, he brought Penix in, but I struggle to give him much credit beyond that.

The successor to Penix at Washington was supposed to be a 22 year old transfer from Mississippi State that Mike Leach recruited/developed.

Now…yesterday…Austin Mack announced he is following DeBoer to Alabama (if I’m not mistaken). 4 star recruit. We’ll have to see how that works out.

DoBoer was Penix's OC/QB coach at Indiana for a year, would assume that's why Penix went to Washington (once Deboer became head coach). He essentially coached Penix for 3 years.

Is Alabama spending as much as Texas, Georgia, Ohio State? No of course not. Is money the reason they are losing all of these guys however? Also of course not.

Money matters, but players commit to coaches too and Saban was the biggest draw of them all. I guess I don't see why this is surpising to anyone. The way things are structure (which sucks by the way) is that if you're good and you have a coaching change, you're going to get decimated and so are several others in your wake.

I would venture to bet that Alabama will be one of the most active in portal acquistions in the spring. In the wake of Saban retiring DeBoer is going to loose a ton of talent... and Fisch will lose a TON from UW because DeBoer left... and Arizona will lose a TON from Fisch leaving... and right on down the food chain. Alabama will be the best positioned to restock the cupboard of that chain, but it's still brutal on a roster.

We're probably in a window, until something changes, where mediocre programs can't afford (or think twice about) firing coaches because you'll lose your whole roster and not have the funds of the high end NIL spendings to do anything to restock and be stuck in a world of hurt.

Crazy they were saying Downs is the highest paid person on the team.

Now they are Zeroing in on QB Julian Sayin

After getting Will Howard.

Its beyond out of control.
Think that Michigan title drove the Ohio St. boosters/fams & coaches nuts. Think they are in "whatever it takes" mood for this upcoming season.. Day better get it done or he may get launched.

The outgoing Bama transfers have to be all about money. There is no reason to doubt Kalen DeBoer at this point. He's going to put a WR in the first round of the draft. Bama's best WR Isaiah Bond transfers out. He's going to put a QB in the first round. Bama's elite five star freshman recruit QB Julian Sayin made it 9 days. He just coached his team into the national championship game. His best safety Caleb Downs and starting LT Kadyn Proctor transfer.
Yeah those guys all make zero sense. I’d get it if the coaches were reversed and Saban scared them off but I find it hard to believe Deboer came in and was abrasive. This is where I think going through the spring and seeing what happens would be prudent.

The transition costs have become much greater, that’s for sure.

Scrolling Twitter/X is giving me that vibe. At least the young and passionate fans are adhering to this. It's B1G title or bust for OSU in 2024/25. Not sure they have the QB to make that run..
