Red Bull show again although Perez has a 5 second penalty.

Question for long time F1 fans (I am admittedly one of those people you don’t like who has become interested in the sport for the first time because of Netflix ;))…

Does the absolute domination by Red Bull - and Max in particular - make the sport more or less appealing in your opinion?

Like does it make F1 fans watch in awe of the accomplishment or does it kind of make it boring in a way with what seems like every race over before it starts?

Real action is in the midfield, not up front. Teams 2-5 is where the juice is. I would love more competition at the top, but it’s been this way for a while (outside of 2021) as Mercedes won the previous 7 championships and it’s been all Red Bull since.

Still love F1 and find it plenty entertaining you just have to know where to look. And there’s the aspect of the off the track drama (even if it seems like more of a soap opera at times from an exaggerated DTS). It is still the pinnacle of Motorsport.

If you’re looking for more passing across the grid with more of an open chance at wins for any team, check out Indycar.

Magnussen a little bit of an idiot today. Two 10 second penalties he took. Bearmen did great in his first race too. He’ll probably get an opportunity next year to be on grid.

Magnussen had a couple early mistakes but the dude had a great race down the stretch and really helped his team out. Kept the rest of the pack backed up and allowed Nico to capitalize on points.

Thanks for a thoughtful answer and not roasting me if I’m sounding like a total amateur.

That’s kind of what I’ve gathered. One thing that I’ve found fascinating relative to other sports is the fierce competition over 2-4th place. Or even some of the other teams just being happy to get points.

For me I completely ignore Max, aside from giving him and RB the respect they deserve. 2-20 is pretty competitive so that's what I'm watching.

In theory, RB and Max domination should hirt the sport, but, it’s more popular than ever. I don’t like it either, but I can’t help but be in Awe of Max’s ability as a driver as well. I don’t necessarily think he’d win in another teams car, but I don’t think any other driver as his teammate at RB would beat him either. He just has that drive and focus to win that puts him a step above others on the grid.

I am just an auto racing fan, I’ll watch just about any kind of road race, no matter what kind of cars are out there, so, I’ll always tune in. As others have said, it’s the rest of the grid that is exciting to watch. I also like seeing the different strategies play out. And with F1, the no commercials and lack of long stretches of yellow flags that really help.

I like Indycar a lot as well, but the commercials and yellow flags lengthened so everyone has a chance for a pit stop can be mind numbing at times.

I’m obviously simplifying some of those seasons a bit where there was still very much good racing happening. Red Bull just nailed the development coming into the new generation (2022) where a lot of the other teams had to really iron out some wrinkles and have been trying to catch up ever since.

Also, I don’t think anyone here is going to judge new fans because of DTS. I got sucked in back in February of 2020 just before the pandemic when we had our first child and my paternity leave coincided with the Netflix release. Two weeks later the pandemic hit and I was watching and reading everything historical to the sport since they weren’t racing until July that year.

Appreciate everyone’s thoughts here. I never really watched auto racing of any kind. I find F1 to be really fascinating once I was initially exposed. Think it’s cool in a way that it’s obviously a lot about the drivers but also the engineering of the cars. That’s definitely unique for sports. Might try to start learning more about it and following along more.

A single place in the constructors standings is millions of dollars at the end of the season. I just put Max on ignore and watch the rest of the field. I was also drawn the fact that they make significant upgrades/changes throughout the season. McLaren started like dog **** last year and was competing for podiums by the end.

Good listen, passing on for anyone interested in some more technical things:

Here is an honest question - What makes Max/elite drivers so good? Like I figured at this level, where there are only 20 guys, that the best of the best wouldn't be separated by a lot. But it seems like Max is a lot better than the next closest driver. I mean no matter who was in the other RB I think he'd still beat them.

Max is elite, but also they've been so good at qualifying that he has a lot of races where he gets clean air and clean track from lap 1 and when you're that fast it just snowballs in F1.

He needs someone to step up and give him a good run again to cement his legacy IMO, obviously an all timer but exactly where he ranks among those.

We've really only seen him win one where he had a clear competitor and he definitely looked more human in that year. Even in Mercs dominant run Lewis had Rosberg for a bit, and then Vettel would get a good enough Ferrari every once in awhile to give him a fight.
