Yeah. They make pizza toppings, but Tyson used to have a good number of value added plants including several in Iowa that would take raw product and press it into nuggets, or patties, pork tenderloins, breakfast sausage, etc. I think Jimmy Dean might be a Tyson label.

Keep in mind that a value added plant like that is subject to many of the same demand issues that a slaughter facility would face, but may be able to operate at higher margins due to the nature of what they produce.

I don't think that Perry plant is that old, I think it opened in the 90's. Tyson wouldn't want to surrender a modern facility with water treatment and a trained workforce if they thought it was a short term thing. The pork complex has been pretty messed up for about 6-8 months. This might be a sign they expect that to continue? They've been losing money in their beef facilities for a good while, but demand in the beef sector is much better so it keeps moving out the door. I think the fresh pork market is just pretty backed up right now, so that's where you end up closing the doors.
Used to be oscar meyer in the 80's. Dad put my mom through 4yrs at state while raising 4 kids. Oh the good ole days

Sad state of affairs. I was an inspector there in the mid 90’s. They used to process breeder sows periodically, not sure how much they weighed. The plant was pretty old and janky 30 years ago. As far as retrofitting for some type of new production, I also worked at Land-O-Lakes turkey plant in Ellsworth in the late 80’s. They closed and I think a bagel manufacturer from Ames moved production to that facilty.

The last time I visited that plant would’ve been late ‘18 or early ’19. I knew the plant manager from his time in Waterloo. Great guy. He retired shortly after I was there. The fact he kept a strictly one-shift facility that size open as long as he did is a testament to his leadership skills. The huge addition was probably about 60% done at that time and he gave me a tour. Very influenced by Swedish and Danish technology. Nothing wrong with that. I think his retirement played a large part in the closing. Crazy how that can happen.

Also, Burke’s is unrecognizable compared to probably 4 years ago. Just freaking huge.

You are correct that a bagel manufacturer moved into the old LOL facility in Ellsworth.

Not sure how long it was operational but my guess of 10 years seems generous.

My grandmother retired from the LOL facility.

Can’t tell from prices in grocery stores…
IMO pork is a great value right now compared to beef. Everyone knows beef is sky high right now.

RE pork, I continuously see boneless 1.5-2.5 loins for $1.40-$1.65/pound.

I also just bought 3 “Iowa bone in chops” for a total of 2.9lbs for $10.99. They were priced per pound and sold individually.

Well over 20 years I think. I know the USDA veterinarian who was the IIC there.
Are you referring to the facility under LOL or as a bagel factory?

My comment of “generous for 10 yrs” was referring to the bagel plant.

I know the facility as LOL was a long time. A few high volume turkey farmers at the time, in less of a 15 mile radius from Ellsworth.
