If Omaha wasn't going to play defense, he was never going to play big minutes for us. Player ratings are what they are. He has raw talent for sure but I'm not sure he's a five star McDonald's level player. Offensively yes, defensively no. Not from what I saw. I think he's a great kid and I hope he finds a place with a system he fits better.

Wasn't he suppsoe to be really good on defense but his offense was extremely raw and his weak point? I can't imagine TJ even going after him at all if he didn't play defense.

Scammed? Lol.

That's right, I forgot that Omaha's whole pitch was that he was a Nigerian prince, who just needed to clear malware from your computer, pending the receipt of a money order.

It was all smoke and mirrors to get him that McDonald's All American label. And the coaching staff was in on it too.
Scammed might not be the right word, but extremely dissatisfied and disappointed fits.

We were fed a line of bs from recruiting services for years and fell for it. Never again. I'm just going in with mentality that guys like Nojus and Pierce might never play here, that way we don't get our hopes up.

You didn’t answer any of our questions? In your opinion what would have been an appropriate ROI from Omaha this year?

Sounds like you needed or wanted results from Omaha rather than the overall team's success?

What part of recruit evaluation ever made you think it was hard science? There are evaluation misses every single year. And it doesn't just stop there. Look at leagues like the NFL and NBA. They pour gobs of money into scouting and the hit rate for a first round pick in the NFL is about 50%. It's even worse in the NBA.
If you were of the opinion that recruiting rankings are anything more than an educated guess, then that's on you, if you feel dissatisfied. A player underperforming their recruiting ranking is ALWAYS a possibility.

Well, I guess I expected a consensus 5 star and the best player we've gotten since Fizer to putup a little more than 6 total points in Big 12 play.

I wanted team results first and foremost, but I was expecting him to be a part of it. Some of us here in the Des Moines area had been following the kid since he was 14. It's a major letdown.

So you thought not being good enough to even get minutes against Florida A&M and going about 5 weeks without playing at all was within his range of outcomes?

My pre-season preview magazine had him 3rd team all Big 12 and a starter.

TJ and staff tried to make him a 5, which he is not. So my opinion is ISU misused him.

I am hopeful he goes to another school and tears it up to prove all the doubters wrong.

Not sure why that is confusing.
At the beginning of the season he was coming in for King at the 4, but he struggled against horrible competition. He didn't play the 5 until Ward got hurt.

I've seen people on here say he should be a wing, but there is no way a person could've possibly watched him play and thought he could be a P6 wing this season. He may get there, but he wasn't close this season. Stretch 4 was the opportunity for him this year based on him and the team needs, but it didn't work out.

I think people forget how the rotation started this season at the 4, which absolutely was Billiew playing significant minutes. Then the next phase that started around Orlando was just play King every possible minute he could, with Milan sliding to the 4 on occasion, and maybe Watson a few spot minutes. Watson was really still a spot minute guy most of the year.

Maybe he'll end up being really good. Maybe that will be as a wing. I don't know. But he wasn't going to help ISU in a major way this year, and it could be that he doesn't want to play the 4 here. So be it. Good luck to him.

Look, everybody expected a lot more out of Billiew this year. What did you want the staff to do? They have a season to coach, so this idea that you get a bunch of in-season player development is just not realistic. Guys get better with reps, especially freshmen, but the player has to show they should be on the court first. He didn't do that. That doesn't mean he won't become really good, but he needs a monster offseason. It wasn't going to happen in-season.

If people think you take a guy that clearly didn't belong on the court after the first several games and just keep force-feeding him minutes because he's a big-time recruit or has a high ceiling, I'm glad you're not coaching. He wasn't ready to contribute big minutes on a good team this season.

He got the first crack at minutes at the 4 behind King, and he didn't demonstrate that he was ready. And that doesn't mean anyone expected him to be mistake-free, or not have some bad moments. But the staff saw the same thing that I think most people watching saw. He wasn't close. Maybe you keep playing him 12 plus minutes a game he eventually gets there, but there's no guarantee of that, and you can't put games in jeopardy to find out.

Other than playing ISU I hope he has a lot of success. I pull for in-state kids, and by all accounts was a very good teammate and kid.

Clearly it was in the range of outcomes, because that's what happened. There doesn't have to be some grand conspiracy. Maybe he didn't pick things up the way they thought he'd be able to. Part of recruiting rankings is projection. Maybe Iowa State's older, more seasons bigs were just better in our system. Maybe he just wasn't as good as the evaluators thought. Regardless, he's not the only player to underperform compared to their recruiting ranking. He didn't make waves in the locker room and didn't cause trouble outside of it. He seemed to be enthusiastic and wanting to be there. I'm sure he envisioned this year playing out a lot differently than it did, but that's just the way it worked out.
It doesn't have to be anything but that. There's no scam. There's no conspiracy. No foul play or negligence. It just didn't work out the way people thought it would. There doesn't have to be someone to blame.

I think he has all the physical tools to be a great defensive player, so perhaps the evaluation doesn't take into account how well they learn a defense. Seems to me that he got confused with the switching/hedging/helping and it doesn't matter how talented you are if you're not in the right spot.

Funny part is I don't even care where he goes. I hope he does well. However, if he goes to one of our rivals. I am not even mad. In fact I see them as taking a player that can't hurt us. That is what I saw out of him. A guy that would thrive in a Wayne Morgan type system of just running non stop. Maybe Bucky ball down at Samford he would be awesome. However, at WVU, Iowa, Kansas. I don't see him hurting us at all.

Yes Horman was limited on offense, but as a sophomore averaged less than .5 of what Jones averaged as a 5th year senior. Horman was almost double Jones' average as a senior, both were great Cyclone players, but this team would have been better with Horman on it than Jones. Horman was just the better player, every stat points that out.
Disagree. Last thing we needed was a big man shooting 43%. Jones shared his minutes with Ward. If he played more and shot 12 times a game, he would have put up similar scoring numbers to Homan. Jones was a consummate team player. He shot 59% this year which is best on the team this year.

Jones was a great team player and he hustled like hell, but he had no offensive game at all, none. His game was getting a rebound and putting it back up, or getting the ball in the middle of the lane and shooting it right underneath the basket. He shot a team leading 59% because all his shots were within 3 feet of the basket.
The team would have been much better with a player that when he catches the ball at the free throw line who can either drive to the hoop or turn and shot a 15 foot jump shot. It thereby opens up the lane allowing our guards to dribble drive and either score or dish it off for an open three.
Now if you are playing Jones 10/15 minutes a game that is fine, but he started the entire year, and averaged 22 minutes a game. In every game Jones was our 5th scoring option. The kid was great and served his purpose, but if the staff cannot find someone that will produce more from the minutes he was getting, we are going to be in trouble.

The State of Hockey
Illini twitter seem to think they have a really good chance at Omaha transferring there
I'm fine as long as he goes anywhere that we don't play. I want to able to root for him and that would be hard if he went to a big 12 team. My guess is he goes down to mid majors. I wouldn't be mad if he went to Drake.

How about this…one for one trade. We get Proctor and Iowa can have Omaha.

Just because ISU benefitted doesn’t change that the system has ruined what college athletics had been. When the pro sports have more restrictions on transfers and salaries, it’s a problem IMO.

What the system is doing is penalizing the coaching staffs that can identify and develop talent by having that talent leave for better funded programs.

I agree with you in many ways but ISU has gone to the last 2 out of 3 sweet 16s and had a good look at an elite 8 but couldn’t get over the hump.

I’m more than happy with this system because we have had a lot of success with it. We are poised to have a lot more and we have the right guy and staff to navigate us through it. I’m gonna enjoy it.

Its been reported repeatedly that TJ like many coaches meets with each player individually after the season, and talks to them about their role on the team for the next season, and what they have to improve on to get more playing time. I am sure that with Omaha he was told unless he can improve his basketball skill set greatly, that he would not be getting a large increase in playing time. No matter how athletic the kid was, his BB IQ was very low or very slow, it does not matter, he wasn't going to get the playing time he wanted, and made the decision to leave. Sometimes it happens, kids are ranked too high or too low, the ranking system is not perfect, as we all know.

I really doubt that Omaha is going to move on and become a star player at another school, he might, but I would not bet on it.
Not sure why some people just cannot admit that he was greatly overrated as a basketball player, wish him luck as ISU goes in a different direction player wise.
I love the Darlinstone Dubar comp he was getting on the most recent Blum and CW pod. Similar athletic profiles and skillsets seemingly. You could see how both of them could become dynamic players during their true freshman years, but ultimately struggled to stay on the court and looked a bit confused and lost when they did get to play. Dubar removed himself froma situation where it was made clear he wasn't going to get the playing time he wanted, so he moved on to Hofstra and has been a good if not great player for them the last few years. Now he has a shot to use his covid year somewhere on a bigger stage. I could see Omaha's career playing out similarly.
