Agreed. And this is the reason you draft a rookie QB, so you can sign/retain impact players in other positions. It McCarthy ends up being legit, they'll have a few cheap years of good QB play with top flight talent around him.
Yep - a solid QB on a rookie deal is better than a top 10-15 guy on a veteran deal.

Now, McCarthy has to be at least solid.

Just saw the breakdown of the contract. His cap hit this year is $ 8 million and next year is $15 million. So Minnesota should still have plenty of cap space to use after this season. It definitely goes up after that, but by the time we get to the 2026 season, the cap may be significantly higher. $40-60 million more is not out of the realm of possibility

Assuming JJ receives the full $140M, and if JJ averages 120 catches per year:

Each catch would be valued at $291,666

For the record, I'm fine with this contract, but wish it wasn't so back loaded heavy on the cap
Don't worry about that too much. Not terribly likely that he'll play those last couple years on the contract, as it's written. Restructures, extensions, or even a trade can change those numbers, a lot. He's got two void years in the end. They can convert salary to bonus, and spread that cost over those years to free up cap space.

Jets' cap number won't be 38M in 2026. They'll restructure his deal at least twice between now and 2028.

Agree 100% this is why it was mandatory to draft a rookie QB. This team's window of winning starts next year when they have top 1/3 in the league cap space.

Projected 2025 cap hits for QB1, WR1, WR2, TE, and LT is $55,019,619. With a $260M projected 2025 cap, that represents only 21% of the cap going your QB, his top 3 targets, and his blind side protection... Even more impressive when you consider 19.7% of the 2024 cap is tied to 3 guys not on the roster (Kirk, Hunter, and Davenport).

Those later cap numbers as a % of the salary cap is right in line with what the top non-QB's have been getting for the last decade at least.

Certainly no reason to panic yet, but listening to various Viking pods, the news coming out of rookie camp re McCarthy is far from confidence- inspiring. Have to keep in mind this is Minnesota media we’re talking about.

I don't have immediate high expectations. I assume he'll start as the #2 or #3 QB and hopefully Darnold is good enough that people aren't clamoring to put JJ in. Now if we get to midseason, Darnold is struggling and you start to hear rumors of the Vikings looking for non-roster QB options, that would be a problem.

Who have you listened to?

I've listened to Alec Lewis and Ben Goessling on various podcasts. They haven't said anything derogatory about JJ. They both said you can see the arm talent. The ball just comes out differently when he throws. Goessling said he's been pretty good with the deep throws and throws that have to be threaded into a spot on a line. It's the short and intermediate touch throws that he's been having trouble with...that can be easily fixed.

I mean it's so early in the process I don't know how anyone can really critique him at this point. Not to mention the press is a mile away at practices they're allowed to attend.

Wait until about midway through training camp and see what the reports are...

I've heard Darnold has looked really good...but people have pointed out that he's looked great in the past until the pressure is on in games.

What are your expectations for JJ? To start the 1st game of the season? To start sometime during the middle of the season? To start once the Vikings are out of playoff contention? For me, I don't expect and hope JJ doesn't play much at all this year. I hope he doesn't start or play much until next season - 2025.
