He won’t win a title but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he is a mid-AA.

Iowa lineup is pretty solid.
Correct. But I think his odds of ever winning a title drop dramatically if he were to go back to football after this year. So I guess I was just thinking out loud that he’s not going to win this year and it’d be odd to go back to both sports and make it a much longer shot for the future too

I wonder if seeing what Gable is doing doesn’t impact Keuter’s decision?

Keuter has the potential to be the best wrestler in the world. If he can put on 25 pounds and win a couple NCAA titles, who’s to say he couldn’t go make an NFL team even with a few years off?

The problem is I don’t think he can put on 25 pounds. He is not built to put on weight. He has been in the Iowa FB weight for a year and barely bigger than he was after his Senior year.

That may be true. I’m also surprised how little weight he’s apparently put on being at Iowa, presumably doing nothing but eating and lifting for the better part of 12 months.

Looks like he’s not giving up completely on football. I almost read that as Keuter going all in for one year, then focusing on football for his junior and senior years
My guess (just a guess) is he is pretty far down the LB depth chart and probably wouldn't see much playing time anyway. He can wait a year to see where he stacks up on the depth chart in 2025 and possibly get an AA on the mat before deciding what's next for him.

Exactly this. All of Iowa's linebackers are back and he wasn't going to get very many snaps anyway. Might as well punt on the year and see what kind of future you can have in wrestling. Kirk will take him back in a heartbeat next year.

Talking to people that have been in that room, it doesn't sound like Iowa wrestling has the best lifting program. I am very thankful we have Durbin at Iowa State

Gable is $795,000 experiment

if it works McDermott looks great

if not, just another player who didn't work out without much financial consequence

I don't follow much 4 and 5A football, but was Keuter a monster on the field? Seems like his wrestling accolades far out weigh his football ones.

For those interested, this answers a lot of questions. He mentioned being behind in the depth chart and this upcoming season not looking good essentially. He mentions that Gable getting into the NFL without experience played a part and going back into football after a wrestling career was an option. He also mentions not being able to pack on weight because when he isn’t in football practices/season he’s wrestling and doesn’t have the luxury of getting bigger. I think him punting on the season to wrestle also means being in the weight room getting bigger, almost like a grayshirt.

Not having a 220 class is hurting Keuter in wrestling. He obviously has the frame to put on weight but that's difficult when you're burning calories for 2 sports.

I mean, technically true but you could add several weights and say the same thing. Not having a 118 hurts guys. Not having an unlimited hvy hurts guys, Pretty big gap between 84 and 97. Probably some guys hurt by not having a 190

I hear what you're saying, but he doesn't have the luxury of putting on bad weight for the time being like a full time heavy would. 90 pounds is a huge class gap

It is, but the fixation on adding a 220 is weird. That might be a good thing for Kueter, but wow that would be an insanely weak and shallow weight class, while also weakening 97 and heavy.

What we’d end up with is 3 watered down weights to help 2-3 real tweeners.
