I think gold script on our red helmets would look amazing. Any photoshop experts wanna take a crack at it??
I, too, would like to see how that looks.

Edit/additional: If someone can do that AND combine it with full uniform of Cardinal-White-Gold (helmet-jersey-pants) - the 3-color theme doesn't always work well, but in this case it might.

For white helmets, I State actually works cause the cardinal and gold pop on the white. Gold script Cyclones on cardinal helmet (ideally with stripe) would be sweet.

Another tiny detail I really liked about the white out helmet was the large black player numbers on the back. Always think thats an under appreciated element
It was kinda throwback-ish - stripe & block numbers on the back (except, the "Cyclones" script helmets all had a tri-stripe... & was school colors...)

The same helmet from 1987 to 1994

You'll also notice, except for the first two years of this helmet when the jerseys had similar sleeve stripes to what we have currently, for the remaining years of this helmet we had some version of UCLA-stripes

Also of note, going back to '46, we MOSTLY wore gold/yellow helmets (just a handful of years of red/cardinal helmets & one year of white) - obviously, this trend ended in 2005 (oops, 1995!) & we've only worn one gold helmet since (right?)

I thought from the start of the 1995 season until now there's been only one game with a gold lid...

I'm sorry, that was a typo, yes 1995, not 2005 & yeah, I could only think of the throwback game (5-stars) - it's sad we didn't have a gold helmet to wear with the McDonalds jerseys (GGW would have looked awesome back then, especially with the CGC pant stripes & cardinal to white socks)

Half the NFL has vintage looks that are 10x better than their "modern" versions.

Atlanta Falcons (either their 1960s throwbacks of their 1990s "Dirty Birds" era)
Dallas Cowboys (as I've always thought their 1970s "Dandy Don" look was their best)
Denver Broncos (the classic "Orange Crush" look can't be beat)
Detroit Lions (the new ones are okay but the Sanders era look was their best)
Houston Texans (new ones are a slight downgrade from their original look)
Jacksonville Jaguars (their 1990s throwbacks from this weekend were gorgeous)
Los Angeles Rams (there was absolutely nothing wrong with their classic look)
Miami Dolphins (the 1972 undefeated look should have never gone away)
Minnesota Vikings (the new ones are okay but not as good as the throwbacks)
New England Patriots (either the Brady era look or the gorgeous white-red-white throwbacks)
New Orleans Saints (their new ones are okay but not as good as the originals)
New York Giants (their new ones are neither throwbacks nor an intelligent, modern design)
Seattle Seahawks (their navy look is drab, go back to the blue/green/silver all the time)
Tennessee Titans (went from a unique design to a generic dark blue team, blah)
Washington Commanders (the gold pants help but this was still a downgrade)

A bunch have teams have went back to classic looks and been better for it...

Buffalo Bills
Cincinnati Bengals (most of the way)
Cleveland Browns
New York Jets (either the 1990s update of the 1960s look or their modern update of their 1970s look)
San Diego Chargers
San Francisco 49ers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (either their red/pewter or even better the orange creamsicle)

Everybody should just do what these teams did and admit they had it right back in the day.

The problem with going back to throwbacks permanently is throwbacks popular because they're unique. If you go back to a throwback as a permanent uniform, within 2-3 years people are going to start wanting something else, and you've blown the "uniqueness" of the throwback uniform in the process.

I love you, @jdoggivjc, but that we need bad designs most of the time in order to appreciate just how good the good designs are when we occasionally see them is a pretty silly take on this matter.

Plenty of teams have classic looks and have never went away from them...

Baltimore Ravens (maybe not as hoary as some of the others but they haven't changed since 1999)
Chicago Bears
Green Bay Packers
Oakland/Los Angeles/Las Vegas Raiders
Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts
Dallas Texans/Kansas City Chiefs
Pittsburgh Steelers

...and these are consistently rated as the best-looking teams in the league. I don't think the fact the Chiefs haven't changed their look since the 1960s is any impediment to merch sales.

Packer fans don't need a ****** modernization to appreciate how good their look is.

Just adding a visual aid for helmet history. It isn’t 100% up to date but close

But, there is a difference between being bored with a uniform & offended by a uniform - boring > hideous

The Jets new uniforms are relatively boring (two colors including white; a couple stripes; block numbers; no TEAM logos/wordmarks) - thank goodness they replaced the previous uniform with this boring one

Their current set is definitely an improvement over their old actively bad one.

But they've got such a better one they've already got lined up as a throwback...

The Jets should look like they did during Super Bowl III at all times. Period.

The earlier "modernization" of this look had the wrong green.

This look with the correct shade of green is boiinnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggggggg.

I'm not suggesting I prefer the design elements used in the 2000s-10s compared to more classic elements. In fact, I greatly prefer the more simplistic uniforms teams are using in both the NFL and college. I've long hated those design elements from the 2000s-10s and I'm glad they're finally disappearing.

Take what the Lions did this offseason. They could have gone back to the uniform style they wore in the 1980s and early 1990s and called it a day and most fans would have probably been fine with that. Instead they took some of the elements from those uniforms and created a new uniform concept that IMO looks a lot better than what they had in the '80s and '90s.

Patriots kind of did the same thing - instead of straight up going back to their throwback 1960s-80s red jersey, they kind of did a modified version of it and kept the navy as the primary home color.

Then there's the Falcons. Absolutely their throwback is far and away better than what their current standard uniform is... but if I'm being honest I prefer their 1970s-'80s (red/red/silver) and 1990s (black/black/silver) looks over their 1960s look (red/black/white)

As far as the Bucs... I'll stand on this island alone but I've always preferred their red and pewter look over their creamsicles - which I think is the most overrated look in the history of football. Not to mention it's people embracing one of the most losing identities in the history of pro sports.

I LOVE the creamsicle uniforms - oddly, as a child I liked the Buccaneers b/c of their uniforms - but, for sure, after five years, the fanbase would almost certainly be clamoring for a new uniform/colors

For sure, it's great when a team can bring modern & traditional elements together

I agree that should be the standard look.

I've seen the current "standard" uniform (that has the Sack Exchange-era helmet logo) - what was the prior "actively bad" uniform? I could do a web-hunt but I figure you'd find it more quickly. Less effort for me, too! :D

Lock up your mother...

I think this one was an attempt to have a tasteful update to the "Sack Exchange" uniform... which turned out to be a pitstop on the way to just adopting the Sack Exchange look as their full-time one.

The Sack Exchange/current look is okay. Not great not terrible. It is boring and feels like a generic USFL uniform. Their Broadway Joe/Super Bowl III look is just so iconic I don't know why you'd leave it.

We agree strongly that the post-2000 design clichés are disappearing.

Thank goodness.

The Lions' modernization of their 80s/90s look is pretty good.

Their home silver/blue/silver look is great. The problem is the other looks.

The lack of striping on their blue pants annoys me, though, and so does them pairing their blue pants with blue socks to give the dreaded "yoga pants" look. They need white or silver socks.

Their black alternatives are an abomination, but we live in a fallen world.

Patriots kind of did the same thing - instead of straight up going back to their throwback 1960s-80s red jersey, they kind of did a modified version of it and kept the navy as the primary home color.

The Patriots' new look is an attempt at a compromise that tries to do both but ends up doing neither. You're neither wearing the look associated with six Super Bowl victories and the most decorated player in the history of the franchise (and heck in the history of professional football) nor are you wearing the classic white/red/white "Pat Patriot" look every Pats fan I've ever talked to has wanted the classic red back.

Their propensity to wear silver/navy/navy with the new design and navy socks with the navy pants makes me mad, too. Their home pants should be silver and their road socks should be white.

Then there's the Falcons. Absolutely their throwback is far and away better than what their current standard uniform is... but if I'm being honest I prefer their 1970s-'80s (red/red/silver) and 1990s (black/black/silver) looks over their 1960s look (red/black/white)

I'd be good with *any* of those throwback looks over their new ones.

As far as the Bucs... I'll stand on this island alone but I've always preferred their red and pewter look over their creamsicles - which I think is the most overrated look in the history of football. Not to mention it's people embracing one of the most losing identities in the history of pro sports.

I'm good with either. The Bucs' red/pewter is a fine design though somewhat a generic 90s look but, yeah, it's associated with two Super Bowls now and has no problems with it so I'm fine with it.

I think the creamsicle is unique and fun but I'm not clamoring for it. There are probably 15-20 teams in the league I'd want to change the uniforms for before we get to the red/pewter Buccaneers.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I'm just not a big fan of gray (or whatever color this is) uniforms. Especially once the players start sweating into them.
