I've heard a rumor from some people "close to the organization" from back out East that the new ownership hates "Commanders" and is going to do away with it as soon as they can.

Redwolves or Hogs or Warthogs or Redhogs are the clubhouse leaders.

The gold pants for this year was a first move in that direction (all they could do so quickly).
I think he really wants to go back to Redskins but he knows he can't get away with it.

I kinda dig Warthogs....

I ******* love the sport-specific Cy logos. Back when I was a kid (sigh), my grandma had a Cy keychain that was the Cy basketball mascot (as full character, not an image on something). The basketball logo especially has always been my favorite ISU logo. Definitely going to pull strings to get a pair (not to wear, just for my collection).

I think he wants "Redskins," too, but knows that ship has probably sailed.

I think the game now is to get as close as you can without actually doing it.

I love this, but I think they'll stay away from anything with any racial ties. It could be done perfectly with great intentions, and they would still be susceptible to criticism about profiting off a segregated unit or something along those lines.

I think they could get away with and in fact promote the fact they went from a literal racial slur to the "Redtails" or the "Red Tails" to honor the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen.

It sounds like the nonprofit associated with their legacy was willing to work with them, too:

Sure, they probably want some money out of the deal, but the Commies' new owner paid $6.2 billion for the team. He can afford to make a donation to that nonprofit and write it off on his taxes.

I don't think anybody is going to object to a name that honors black WWII aviators. They can stick to the aesthetics of a WWII fighter like a Mustang, too, which should make for fun design concepts.

I'm partial to the Redtails, that logo would be awesome!

Red Tails doesn't roll off the tongue well for me. I do like honoring the Tuskegee Airmen though. But what did they have to do with Washington DC again, if anything?

Just "Mustangs" would sound better. Paint the tail red to honor the T Airmen, if they wish, but Washington Mustangs sounds better than the Washington Red Tails. Neither are perfect.

I know it doesn't have 'Red' in the name, but I'm not a fan of any name with 'Red' in it, other than Redskins. Red Tails is probably the best I've heard so far. Redskins is better still, but I guess that's not going to happen.

"Washington Mustangs" would be a very fetch choice.

You can still lean into honoring the Tuskegee Airmen without relying on the negative connotations of the "Red-" prefix relative to the old name. You can still design your look and iconography around the WWII fighter aircraft and color everything the burgundy and gold you want to keep.

A team in Washington kind of sort of makes you want to lean into some cliché patriotic name, and that's certainly the case with the Washington Capitals and the Washington Nationals. "Mustangs" is a pretty patriotic name in context, though -- it's honoring the premier fighter aircraft of WWII, its design and its mass production being a triumph of American engineering and manufacturing that helped win the war.

The only downside I can think of is the NFL has a lot of horse names as it is...

Broncos
Colts
Chargers

...but only two of them lean into the equine aesthetic. The Chargers are themed to electricity.

I think Warthogs is the best option. It leans into the history of the team with the great O-Lines of their 80s and 90s super bowl teams, know as The Hogs. And they still have a military tie in with the A-10 Warthog.

The best part for Washington fans, is adopting that name would piss off Jerry Jones to no end!

What do you mean by 'fetch choice'? I've not heard fetch in that context before.

Do mean that it is a 'stretch', or it is 'reaching'? Or do you mean it as a 'good' choice?

I live in the DC area - and most of the people I know that are actual Commanders fans (many fans of other teams out here) hate the name Commanders and the new uniforms they've been wearing. Truthfully, a lot of them want it to go back to Redskins (but know they probably won't). And there are numerous native tribes that have asked them to do it as well. One has even filed a lawsuit to get it changed back (not that that will work).

I think the hope is that they will change the uniforms to look as much like the old ones as they can (without the logo) and come up with some name that honors the franchise past, while also something patriotic since we are DC.
I should add that the thing they care about the most has happened. That scumbag Dan Snyder is gone and never coming back.

Warthogs seems like the best historical name for the Redskins, besides Redskins. It connotes a large acne, or a dirty pig, to me though. Neither are appealing.

I LOVE the Mustangs idea. Could really lean into some cool military iconography from that era and would immediately become one of my favorite NFL themes. Now if only we could get the Ravens to rebrand as the Blackbirds and utilize the SR-71...

Did anyone read the comment from "New Yooper"?
Yeah, I read it.

The "old" photo of Robert Jones depicts the correct shade of Cardinal. The "new" photo of Milan does not (too red).

But if these are throwbacks, maybe the intent wasn't to do so. And if so, these new unis hopefully are used on a limited basis.

Back in 2020 there was a story of a 'trademark squatter' and that person owned the trademarks for 'Redtails', 'Redhawks' and 'Americans'. In order to use any of those names the sports team will have to pay the owner of the trademarks.

Is the Bob Jones actually red the "correct" shade? I always thought that red was a little too dark, especially when it gets wet with sweat.

I think the "old" picture of Robert Jones has some lighting effects. Under brighter lights, similar to the throwback pictures, last years home jerseys' shade of cardinal is much lighter.

I think the new red on the new unis closer matches the new football unis. I think the new football unis pop more on TV and in pictures. Looking back at the previous football red it looks really dark now. Maybe that has more to do with no white in the uniform.
