Gotta make layups. Gotta make free throws. Gotta make at least a few of the wide-open threes.

HOWEVER, I would also love for Iowa State to be allowed to "defend" the same way other teams get to -- illegal screens, hacks, holds, shoves, etc.

It’s an easy thing to complain about, but we don’t even attempt to guard that way. We aren’t athletic enough. Instead of trying to adjust the way he recruits/coaches he’d rather complain about the way games are officiated.

It's an automatic whistle every time, and that's based 95% on ISU's reputation of not being physical at all and 5% the actual play in question.

I didn't want to say it before because I'd get flamed for it but I really don't think we looked all that great in the 4 games before UNI. I have a feeling this will end up like '22-23, just replace Joens and Soares with Brown and Crooks.

Come into the season with sky-high expectations, fall flat, then when expectations are completely gone win the Big 12 tournament, expectations return and lose in the 1st round of the NCAA turnament.

Maybe things will turn around by Sunday but I'm not gonna hold my breath.

All night long UNI had players moving to essentially create a moving “wall” at the top of the key. Each time I saw it I wondered how it wasn’t considered a moving screen, but…not being an official I can’t really say.

I hope you haven't just jinxed Audi into the fate Soares suffered.

Audi needs to become a better and more willing passer down low. Have to make teams pay for their double and triple teams. Can’t just force up wild shots hoping to draw fouls.
agreed, but our passing in general needs improvement. When your team is slow, you have to be quick and smart with the basketball. Quick inside out and making the extra quick pass. Seems like we have people just dribbling the ball all over the place and all we typically do is through risky lob passes into the post.

Our offense is basically Emily Ryan dribbling around in circles and just hoping something happens.
This is how I initially knew things were going badly. If Em is dribbling that much our offence has broken down. If it happens a few times, Bill should really take a time out for an inbound play to hopefully get a quick bucket.

Having watched the team this year, the ball and player movement has been quite good. Ball screens effective. Crisp passing. Putting the ball where the defense can’t get it. And Crooks passed out quite well. Last night none of that was true. Told my wife early that UNI had Crooks flustered. She was being beat up and got away with it. What cost us the most was second half production by the rest of the team disappeared. And the bench…woof…nothing there last night. The most consistent player on the team was Hare.

I imagine every team is going to see how effective UNI was against Crooks and try the same thing. Heck Chicago State and Southern tried the same thing, just didn't have the players to pull it off.

Last night was just how some nights go in basketball, but it sure was disappointing to lose to what on paper should be the least good WBB team in the state.

Laaaaaaame. You want to be a top 10 team? Act like it. You can’t get your girls up to play? That’s your problem. Getting waxed by a Mo Valley team without their only post player is unacceptable. I don’t care “how hard it is to play them.”
Agree. That's why I liked playing the UNI and Drake games in MBB and don't mind UNI in football. Huge test of your mental strength. All the pressure is on Iowa State, you're going to get the other team's best shot and they're not going to be intimidated to play you. Are you going to shrink up and play scared/not to lose, or play to win, be aggressive and play like you're capable in an uncomfortable game?

I like those tests early in a season. Same reason I'm looking forward to the game @iowa this year. Let's see what we're made of. You don't get better by shying away from tough games.

I was glad to see Bill's offensive creativity shifted from the "get Ashley the ball and get the **** out of her way" offense to the "watch Emily dribble for 20 seconds then hope she figures something out before the shot clock expires" offense. Really creative stuff...

The lack of athleticism is hard to overcome. Perimeter shooting is great, but basketball is a hard game when you don't have anyone that can go around their defender.

This...... and a unpopular opinion that Jackson should be running the point. The ball stays in Ryan's hand too much with her back to the basket. In the long run, her coming back will hurt this team. Brown needs to be the focal point, which will open things up for Crooks, but we'd rather have a PG dribble 15-20 seconds off the clock with her back to the basket. Iowa is going to destroy us.....

I'm no basketball expert, but I have to disagree with Fennelly's post game comments. Terrible defense lost this game.

The leading scorers for UNI were predictable and ISU gave them open shots and hoped that they would miss. That is no way to play D.

UNI was the aggressors. They came after Crooks and didn't care if they fouled, take her out of the game which they did very well.

We had no plan for McDermott. We didn't switch or switch well on screens, we didn't stay with her on D. Hardly any fouls on her and no hard fouls to get in her head.

ISU is soft.

The team I saw last night wouldn't beat anyone with aggression and a good scoring threat.

This loss isn't about UNI, it is about ISU.

Again, I'm no expert, but I really did not see the same game Fennelly described.

I usually get crucified for trying to educate people on the rules, to the point I've almost given up on it, but I'll give it one last try.

What you describe is not illegal. The term "moving screen" has led to a lot of misunderstanding, and officials have been trying to get that vocabulary out of the game. A screen is only illegal if the screener causes illegal contact. There is no such thing as a "moving screen" without contact.
