Best helmet of the modern era?
Ha! I thought the same thing. The script is much better on this helmet, but it's not that big of a difference. I'd like to see a gold script on the cardinal helmet. I'll say it again, but our cardinal helmets are the best part of our uniform.
Sometimes you have to go back to go forward.
To be fair, we’ve been awful at some point with all of our logosThink this must be them rolling out that Cyclones logo as an official word mark. I don’t mind it, and it looks great on the white helmet. Although I can already hear my dad complaining about how we were awful with this logo in the 80s and 90s.
You're not wrong. The crowd that doesn't want to use objectively good logos because of the era are ridiculous. Here's the Coach's & win percentage for each logo.To be fair, we’ve been awful at some point with all of our logos![]()

Walking Cy - Duncan - 18-24 - .432
Iowa State Tornado - Criner - 16-24 - .405 & Walden - 28-57 - .335 (total .352)
Cynado w/ blue - McCarney - 56-85 - .397
I-State - Chizik - 5-19 - .208, Rhoads 32-55 - .368, & Campbell 57-48 - .543 (total .435)
Campbell really saves the I-State era which would be .333 without him.
But point being, none of our last 4 logos saw a lot of great success, so just go with what looks good. Frankly I like having a lot of variety of retro logos, just wished we'd use something with a tornado in it more frequently, but not the Bugle.
Cant explain it but I love the 81-82 ISU with the lines. It's so stupid but I've got one of the mini helmets with this logo at my houseI appreciate the records research, and the general point.
But if we're focusing exclusively on helmet logo, Duncan didn't use Walking Cy (used only in 1967, to my knowledge). These were Duncan-era helmets:
Iowa State can use any of their old logos right? Or did we sell the rights off? It just seems like the athletic department bought rights back to this script logo and is using it on everything now or something lol. Looks great.
I never saw a game in person or on TV while they were wearing those helmets, I only ever saw highlights. But I agree with you, for whatever reason I love that helmet!Cant explain it but I love the 81-82 ISU with the lines. It's so stupid but I've got one of the mini helmets with this logo at my house
Very good point, I just pulled up the logo history and the wiki for ISU football. You're not wrong. The crowd that doesn't want to use objectively good logos because of the era are ridiculous. Here's the Coach's & win percentage for each logo.

Yeah, that one ALWAYS catches my eye when a bunch of old logos/helmets are shown.Cant explain it but I love the 81-82 ISU with the lines. It's so stupid but I've got one of the mini helmets with this logo at my house
While this is spectacular, no way they break out a new helmet like that for an away game.Gold pants, and gold helmets!!! And, with the Cyclone script logo.
My dreams have come true!
