Well, I knew Auburn was going to have a streak in them. And while I appreciate that, Gilbert kept us in it with a lot of his work, WTF was he doing at the end of the game trying to dribble through three people. As a leader and a senior, you’ve got to recognize how to play smarter when the game is on the line. I’m hoping that he’ll learn from this as well as the rest of the team learn from playing such a good opponent. My son loves watching Gilbert. But I get so frustrated because I feel like he is borderline out of control most of the time.

Didn’t help that Lipsey couldn’t make those free throws at the end. Looks like everything he was shooting was coming up short.

Tough loss to take.
He also had a really stupid foul on his 4th. There is a difference between playing really aggressive D and making a bone headed play. He has to play smarter.

It's definitely not worth overreacting to last night's game. Auburn is very good. Jonhi Broome is one of the best players in the country, and they have a lot of guard and wing options that are all capable of getting hot. I wasn't particularly looking forward to the matchup, but Iowa State proved they belong. Even in the second half, I thought we showed a lot of resilience to both not let Auburn keep their run going to get a huge lead and also come back to have a shot to win in the last 30 seconds.

In terms of where to go from here...

They have to figure out a way to facilitate shots for guys like MM and Jones when the offense isn't humming along and they aren't getting shots in the normal flow. Auburn was making it hard by blowing through screens (the same thing Illinois did last year), but if that's the defensive playbook, Iowa State will need to find the counter.

I know Gilbert's foul trouble made things difficult last night, but it did feel like some of the subbing was odd. For instance, I feel like Jefferson's minutes should have basically been matched with Broome's and matched with lineups to make sure that Jefferson always ended up on him defensively. But it's also early and I know Otz's lineups change up a lot over the course of the season.

Speaking of Jefferson, he is very talented, and I think his passing ability is something that can be used more out of the high post. But his ball handling isn't at the point that he should consistently drive against a defense as aggressive as Auburn's. They definitely should get the ball to him in the post, and I think he's a skilled ball handler in the open court on fast breaks, but in the clogged half-court, it's a different story.

Disappointing loss, but:
Auburn made a 20-4 run in the first 6 minutes of the 2nd half to tie the game.
The Cyclones could've wilted, but Auburn couldn't take the lead until 4 minutes left.
They then went up by 4 and had that lead with 2:07 left. I really thought they'd pull away, but instead the Cyclones responded again and had a lead with 51 seconds left. Tied and the ball with 30 seconds left.

Poor final possession.

My point is this team didn't fold under the first adversity they've faced this season. The players and coaches will learn and benefit from the experience. I just hope they have legs to do it again today and tomorrow. I'm glad Dayton had a very similar game.

Also, seems pertinent to mention, that was Auburn's first lead of the game IIRC

Saw an early NBA draft article and they had Milan listed as a late 1st round pick. I get they are trying to project what they are going to be like in 3 to 5 years, but I just do not see it. The guy is still very streaky from distance. For ISU to win the league and go deep in the tournament we really need him to play like a 1st round pick and he is not nearly consistent as a scorer, averaging 10 per game is not enough, we need to be getting 15 to 18 from him every night.

Iowa State was a 2 seed last year with no good non con wins and losses to a 9 seed in the tournament and an NIT team.
we won't have the strength of the Big 12 conference to fall back on this year. It won't hold as much weight. Need some quality non can wins for our resume.

Another moral victory to add to the extensive collection.

I also agree we should ONLY win games. ;)

I was expecting we'd be the 1st team in the last 50 years to win all of our regular season game and then go on to win the championship.

His lateral quickness (lack of) is a problem. He's absolutely a defensive liability when he's isolated in one v one.

Yeah, I don't see that right now. I don't think it's necessarily his shooting not being consistent; it's that right now, his shooting is still pretty much his only skill. Obviously shooting is important in the NBA, but when shooters get drafted, they still typically have some athleticism or defensive projectability, or are much more well-rounded offensive players. I was hoping MM would develop his offense into this year to be the kind of player that you can run an offense through, but he hasn't shown that yet this season.

The first half was playground basketball. ISU had over 50..... very uncharacteristic.

The 2nd half was more like Big 12 conference play. Make just 1 more FG and ISU eeks it out.

This is a brutal stretch. Potentially Auburn, Dayton, UCONN, and Marquette…. you could easily lose all of those and still be a really good team. Crazy.
