This was NOT expected before the season - this would be viewed as a Top 5 ISU defense against a Top 5 Marquette offense, however it's the other end of the court that is the elite matchup, with ISU's offense and Marq's defense being unexpectedly great so far this year.

That 17.3% Steal rate is bananas - and will be a real problem for our guards. They have 3 players averaging over 2.5 steals a game. For reference, Tamin was #4 in the country at 2.7 steals per game last year.

Whichever set of guards can take care of the ball while running their offense will win this game.

The pace will also be very interesting - both teams are the same, playing really fast on offense (top 20 in offensive possession length) and really slow on defense (bottom 30 in defensive possession length)

I'd love to see us get some defensive identity back. I'm willing to attribute the defense in Maui to the weirdness of the gym, format, etc. Those always seem to be high scoring games. But I think we are capable of guarding at a much higher level starting tonight.
I think the offenses get the better of the defenses tonight - and that Marquette's defense isn't as good as their numbers show so far - and this is another game in the 80s. ISU 87-81.

Love Gilbert but this is a game where he cannot over dribble into the lane.

Number 4 Kentucky went down last night number 5 Marquette is going down tonight clones win 79-71

Going to be a dog fight. Been really impressed with this year's Marquette team. They've whooped purdue & beaten georgia & Maryland on the road already. Keshon vs Kam will be awesome.

Will be a close game and exciting to watch.
I think it comes down to Momcilovic hitting early shots and gaining his confidence, and Gilbert utilizing his teammates and not overdribbling.

PS, Has there been a Fran Fraschilla sighting this year? Love it when he calls our games.

One advantage is Smart has coached in Hilton so he can prep them for it even though actually being in it is something you can't practice for.

I'd guess they go after Gilbert and Lipsey early to create foul trouble, which imo is the most important aspect of a first half.

He was far from the only one doing this a week ago and hopefully they've worked through and whatever was causing the defense to be leaky over the last few days.

The dribbling thing did seem to be better vs. CU but CU was much softer on passing lanes and Marquette won't be.

Ill take Hilton 85-81. Hilton takes this game over the top for us. I think the game comes down to Good Lipsey or bad Lipsey. Hope he is 100 percent.
I was just curious and was seeing quite a few seats for sale for this game on Seatgeek.
