This year's team is DEEP..... that will help tremendously when foul trouble becomes a factor, not to mention other advantages that come with a loaded roster.
Heise is probably 8th-ish in rotation. He had a great game last night.

If folks are wanting more coverage, Matt Norlander and Gary Parrish talked ISU in their pod this morning: . Parrish has ISU as his #3 team in the country right now, after Tennessee and Auburn.

Nojus is a stud, even as a freshman, and if Tamin has to miss some minutes, it'll let him definitely shine.

And that's not to mention that maybe out best defender and ++ athlete is sitting on the bench not getting into games. If Demarion is needed, he'll be ready.

And in conference play later in the year. Keep fresh legs and we can go far.

I'm wondering if the staff saw some trends on Cam Jones of him picking a moment lateish in games to start to take over and then input the plan into making the switch.

And MU's staff may have underestimated Heise's ability to guard and disrupt; I don't recall him being put in that role in Maui or it wasn't highlighted as much.

It helped that overall ISU seemed to press the perimeter a bit more as the 2nd half wore on.

I think MU also got tired after their burst.
I ABSOLUTELY noticed that at the under 8 timeout. They came out with soft legs in transition.

I don't see it as being carried by Gilbert as much as he is just establishing himself as a go to star. Last year our team could have really used a closer/go to guy. I think Jones and Gilbert both started becoming that towards tourney time. Now it feels like we have that guy. Jones is ahead of last year and just a step behind Gilbert. I'm confident that Momcilovic will still be there, then we are seeing Jefferson step up while also seeing Heise's potential.
I thought Gilbert definitely had that star quality/closer mentality the second half of last season. The difference this season is that Lipsey has been a zero pretty much shockingly so Gilbert has had to take on more of a scoring load.

But you're right, others will start chipping in more and Lipsey has WAY more to give so it's not alarming by any means, just an early season observation. Team is in a really good place when they're taking Auburn to the brink and comfortably beating Marquette with a team that's not firing on all cylinders yet. The upside is incredibly high with this group, easily the most complete Cyclones I've seen in my 30+ years of watching. Gonna be a fun ride this seaosn.

What a luxury to have your 8th man play defense like Heise. Add in he went 3/3 from the floor. Look out!

You can see that Otz is able to match up this season with his roster. Heise played 21 minutes and matched up perfectly against Marquette. Conversely, Momcilovic on played 17 minutes. Nice to have quality depth.

Some understandable growing pains, but his time is coming.
There were a couple times last night where he passed up an open 3 to drive to the basket. Part of his growth will be learning when to shoot, when to drive and pull up, when to drive all the way. One play in the second half particularly, he passed up the 3, drove, passed up the wide open elbow jumper, and continued into the teeth of their bigs, missing the shot from the block

This isn’t a knock on him but what’s been with Milan this year? He’s had a couple really good games and then he disappears. I was really hoping he would come out firing this year and that really hasn’t been the case. We need him to get going a bit.

Some were 'concerned' about Milan not having a big night.

Give me a team that can score 81 and win by 11 against a good team without two big contributors like Lipsey and Milan having to do much scoring.

He needs to shoot more. He's not a good defender. He's not a great passer. He's not a great off the dribble. He's not great driving to the rack.

He's great at putting up shots. Take your longer twos and three and shoot them. His value is in shooting and scoring, and if he's not doing that, then he's delivering very little value right now. It's okay to miss. Just shoot.

Beyond the win, I think there's a lot to like about last night. There's still a lot of ceiling to be explored, with Tamin's struggles and MM not being a super consistent performer yet.

The main thing to me, though, is that the defense returned last night. Not so much in forcing turnovers (though Marquette is a low turnover team, and there were some key steals in the last 5-10 minutes), but especially in two-point defense. In the Auburn and Dayton games, they were getting easy looks at the rim by getting through ISU's double teams, which amounted to 59% and 69% two-point field goal percentages for them. Last night, it seemed that we were a bit more select in terms of double teams and hard hedges and focused more on making sure that no one got an uncontested look at the rim. It resulted in 6 blocks and a 41% two-point field goal percentage for Marquette, who is at 59% from two for the season.

There will be times when both strategies are useful (more aggressive traps and steal attempts vs. more of a straight-up defense) but last night it was beneficial against a seasoned team that wasn't going to turn the ball over a ton. It also helped keep Marquette's free throw rate way down compared to the games in Maui.

Van Pelt’s show after Duke-Auburn had lengthy highlights of our game.

ESPN sucks, and it really sucks our game was on ESPN+, but I'm also tired of our fans' victim mentality where it's to the point where we're making **** up.

Could coverage have been better and more extensive? Sure. But the making **** up to feed the narrative makes us look like whiny losers.

It was the third game with highlights on the Van Pelt show...
I watched Van Pelt and Sports Center after the Auburn-Duke game, but
obviously missed SVP showing highlights. I do like to hear national figures discuss Cyclone games and it disappoints me when a game like last night receives minimal coverage.

Heise played FANTASTIC defense on Kam the final minutes. Swung the game
It was, I want to go back and watch those 5-6 minutes, he just shut him down.

It really came out of nowhere, because while Heise has been solid and played well on the season, I don't think we've seen him do hardly any "on-ball" defending this season, so his ability to shut down an elite on-ball scorer that way, and to keep him from where he wanted to go, was unbelievable.

He did pick up his second turnover on the season last night - so he's now at 8 assists, 5 steals and 2 turnovers on the season.

One aspect of his game we haven't seen translate yet to the game is rebounding - he and Jefferson won all of the preseason rebounding contests in practice. I'd expect to see him become more of a presence on the boards as the season goes on

Milan had 24 last game.
This team has several ways to score. It's not possible for everyone to score 15-20 every game. I guarantee Gilbert will have a game in which he's in foul trouble and/or just not scoring. Having Jones off the bench is great and having 2 bigs who can score moves this team to another level. Scoring in the 80's against Auburn and Marquette, 2 excellent defensive teams, demonstrates how good this offense is.

My guess is that the coaches have challenged him to be more multi-faceted in his game this year. They want him to shoot more, but they want him to be more than a catch and shoot guy. I think he's been challenged to take his defenders off the bounce and score at all 3 levels. And he's still learning how.

He lacks defense, that's about it. If you don't necessarily need his scoring and Heise can come in and give you more defensively, you do it.

Winning a top 5 game with our starting point guard and sharpshooting forward being non-factors shows just how good this team is. Marquette didn't play a bad game and they couldn't miss from deep. Once Marquette tied things up in the second half our guys went nuts and quickly put the game away. These guys are exciting and fun to watch.
