If we get a set of refs that allow Tamin & Gilbert to be aggressive, this team is going to be near impossible to beat. Only had three team fouls total with about 3 min left in the first half.

If they get dinged on hand checks the first 5 minutes of the game completely kills how they play defense and flips script.

Refs last night were very forgiving.

Agreed, I'll gladly take an occasionally missed "off the head" out-of-bounds call if the refs let us play the way we want to play.

Yep!

That team deserved a #1 seed. They clearly showed all conference season that they were a top 3/4 team in the country. Getting the worst 2 seed is a bigger screw job than the Big 12 not getting a Bye in this year’s CFB playoff.

There were people complaining in the game thread about the refs and I just couldn't figure that out. I thought we got a great whistle.

Folks, Tamin is hurt. Not sure why Chris Williams keeps saying in podcasts things like “I don’t think he’s hurt” or “I don’t think he’s been hurt”. Yes, he was and is hurt. TJ again reiterated in his presser (the same info he shared in Maui) that Tamin isn’t close to 100%. But he’s not a low enough % that he’s going go sit out… he’s a beast. He’ll have plenty of games where he’ll score (and be counted on to score) yet this year.

My post wasn't meant to be a commentary on whether Tamin is hurt or not. But that ISU doesn't need Tamin to be a scorer like we might have his first 2 years. He can be the 5th option in most lineups.

So as long as he's not hurting himself further and he can play through the pain, ISU can win with Lipsey as he's been playing. I heard ESPN announcers during Maui games and last night focus on Lipsey's lack of scorer being a hindrance to ISU winning. In watching the Cyclones 7 games this season, I feel that is a bad take for the 2024/25 team.

Sure, ISU has a bigger upside if Lipsey can score 15 when needed. But that need is contingent on injuries or foul trouble or a prolonged shooting slump by Gilbert and Jones.

Very possible he tried one on and wasn’t comfortable with it.
Weird thing about tonight is that this one happened 30 feet from the basket.

He’s been getting clobbered all season inside.
He is getting clobbered. I'm a little concerned about his nose. That's two times, hard in the nose, the past 3 games. Luckily it's not broken or he would have to wear a mask.

Obviously it would be more comfortable to play w/o a mask. It would be nice if he could keep from 'sticking his nose out', but that's just the way he plays. Teams may be targeting him now, in the nose. They wouldn't mind if he had to leave the game.

They did have a couple of blatantly wrong out of bounds calls
Marquette traveled a couple times where it wasn't called and it seemed like their guards liked to offensive hook when they'd get near the rim.
Chatfield was called for an offensive foul but it wasn't the ref near the play it was the one near the 3pt arc. I don't know how he could see that play any better being way further away.
The refs did let us play physical though, I'll give them that.

I think my main gripe was the ref with the shaved head. He was pretty bad last night.

Yeah, he made that super late blocking foul after the shot missed and was rebounded. Gave Marquette two free points. Then immediately had a makeup call that did absolutely nothing for us.

The crowd made that known when they showed the replay on the new scoreboard. The ref was standing right there on the baseline.
The crowd had a couple of those replay reactions last night.

The bald ref also missed a blatant double dribble in the first half on Marquette a few possessions after an obvious travel on the same player that wasn’t called.

I think this is the correct answer. We had a noticeable advantage in the paint and TJ exploited it with the presidents. With those two controlling the paint, we needed three sets of quick feet to scramble the back court.

Marquette is a very good team and run a similar offense to what Fred ran while here. They design plays to get open 3 point looks. Milan has gotten better on defense and will continue to get better, but he's not the best defensive match-up against Marquette. He'll have plenty of games to shine this year.

The ability for us to mix and match lineups is gonna make us an absolute pain in the ass to game plan against. I'm here for it.
"The Presidents." I like that!

The call on Lipsey was crazy bad. Players literally do that 15+ times per game. Auburn did this a number of times as well. To make THAT travel call at THAT point in the game - after the officials had just made sure the stoppage of play (from the second Gilbert situation) was extra long and all the crowd momentum was gone and Hilton was quiet - is crazy bad, and it certainly felt like the ref was trying to send a message.

He lacks defense, that's about it. If you don't necessarily need his scoring and Heise can come in and give you more defensively, you do it.

I don’t think that he’s a bad defender at all. Moves his feet well for someone his size. The issue is, when teams are using the high ball screen every time down the court, he gets caught on too many switches. Momcilivic guarding kam Jones is an automatic bucket.
