OK, I will give you preseason rankings. Those are BS.
But if you beat the #10 team or whatever mid-season - they were considered #10 at the time the game is played. Kansas State was ranked #24 at the time the game was played. The history books have literally always given teams credit for, ya know, beating ranked teams on the day they played them.
Unfortunately, none of this matters. Agendas and narratives matter. It is easy to spin ANY of this sh*t a million different ways.
"Iowa State has a top 20 win on the road @ Iowa, huge win! Along with another top 25 win against K-State - Iowa State is a very good team"
"Iowa State has 0 wins against the current top 25 - Iowa State is not a legit team."
"Illinois got a nice ranked win against Kansas in the non-conference - great non-conference win helping to prove they deserve to be ranked NOW in the CFP."
"Kansas is sub-500 - what a terrible loss for Iowa State!"
"BYU beat SMU before they were hitting their stride, so it doesn't really count as a ranked road win."
