A lineman’s helmet making it no good seems totally rational to me. The ground doesn’t since the defense can return it off the ground. Just glad to know real rule. CF genius found it faster than google search.
I'm curious if it's ever happened before. I guess it must have if they made a rule against it. I've never seen it.

Seems great if the defender sticks his leg in front of the ball on purpose. Seems dumb if an offensive player basically dribbles it off a leg or passes it off a leg.
I'd take it one step further. A defender should be able to use his feet to defend a pass. Make kicked balls legal.

Agree though, when an offensive player dribbles it off a players foot, it drives me nuts when it's called. The player dribbling made the mistake, not the defender.

There are lots of irrational rules. The one I always hated is that fumbling out of bounds in the end zone results in a touchback for the defense.
so dumb. should be offense ball at the 1" line or at the very worst, a touchback for the offense. why does the ball change possession out of bounds? the defense never possessed the ball in play, why do they get it when it goes out of play?

So it’s live for the defense pick it up and score a TD, but it’s dead to score a fg when it hits the ground after being kicked (but still live for fg after being blocked).

Seems irrational given that it’s live to score for other team but good to know it’s at least in the rules that way.
