Settles made a really interesting comment during the end of the game. He said he couldn't recall any coaches, other than Cale Sanderson, who went on to have a great career after leaving Iowa State.

He meant it as a compliment. He said that coaches have such a good thing at Iowa State that they put their career at risk if they leave.

Hope Matt Campbell was listening. :)
Did Settles ever win a high school championship at WMU? They had three D1 players around that time.

If Milan's floor was as high as Curtis', we'd be unstoppable.

Milan's biggest issue is the inclusion of a more offensive minded front court. There just aren't the opportunities for him to operate out of the post like he did last year when we have some combination of Jackson, Jefferson and Chatfield on the floor almost all the time. I think there will be times we go smaller and he can play the 4 and get more post touches. But without that, he's left as kind of a standstill 3 point shooter.

Gable never coached at ISU AFAIK but otherwise point taken -- it's a mixed bag.

One thing is clear, the grass ain't always greener at another job.
True, he was an assistant. But I do agree with you, Settles and others. Most have not fared well after leaving Ames.

I don't think so.

That's a little bonkers that him and Edwards were on the same team in what I think would have been 1A then and they couldn't get it done.

Of course, neither did Raef Lafrentz.

WMU also had a good girls basketball team a couple of years after that. I think Linda Lappe was on that team. I think she had a brother, Bert Lappe, who played at UNI, if I remember correctly. The 90s were the heyday of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.

I think you can make the pretty solid argument that Greg McDermott fits that category, that one was clearly a win-win for both parties

First in-person game for me in 40 years! Soaked it all in until all players had left the floor.
Impressions:
- Players don't seem as tall when you're watching from as high up as I was! Lol
- During that 21-3 run to end the half, the defense was just stifling. Utah was overwhelmed.
- Most guys come off the bench and take a couple of possessions to feel comfortable. Curtis scores immediately!
- Tamin is so tough.
- Gotta get better at keeping opponent off the offensive board. There are teams much better at it than Utah. Houston and Auburn come to mind.
- There seem to be more designed offensive sets than in years past, to get the ball inside and to get ooen 3's. Having so many skilled options is great!

Overall, I'm sure those of you attend regularly know that crowds can be much better than last night, but it sure seemed loud and involved when the team was scuffling. I had a great time!
To your bolded point, for the games, you mentioned, it hasn't been "that" bad. We held Utah slightly under their average OB% and we also held Baylor and Auburn significantly under theirs as well. For reference, Utah is #62 (32.5%), Baylor is #16 (36.5%) and Auburn is #26 (35.1%). Iowa State is #43 (33.3%) and TTU is slightly above Auburn.

I agree. I actually think MM has improved a fair bit from last season. On defense and when battling for rebounds, he seems stronger and more coordinated. I think he's also stronger with the ball in his hands. It's just that, as you said, the frontcourt is otherwise improved, which takes away opportunities from him. Plus, Gilbert and Jones have also both improved quite a bit and Heise can do more things than Watson or Pav did last year. So even if Milan is better than as a freshman, his role hasn't really expanded beyond spot-up shooter yet.

I gotta give #34, the 7 footer for Utah credit. He was really a force on defense and rebounding. No offensive game, but he's a big reason that Jackson and Chat had quiet nights. It helped Jefferson, when that guy had to sit with 4 fouls for an extended period of time.

Honestly should have fouled out about halfway through the game.

Isn't Settles still playing at Iowa??

It's crazy that Settles only played 5 seasons and Perry Ellis played 4, but they're still the barometer for (been around forever) even though there are 25-7 year olds currently playing college sports :)

That's why I'd like to see him get better on the drive. If he could slash and start dunking on these guys he would be monster.

A good win while putting forth a B type effort. Will take that any time.

Still think this team is missing something, but can't quite place what it is
I think I know where you are on this but I think it is there, just hasn't been showing last few or more games.

Gilbert has been 'human' last 5-6 games. In Maui, he was superhuman. I think we see some superhuman KG over next 5-6 games, hopefully at the right time.

I think it was because he had to be the man in Maui. No one else was making things happen. He had to be the one other team’s reacted to. I was upset he took the last shot in the Auburn game because they were ready for him. I thought about it for awhile and really he earned that shot because he was what was making our offense go. We have not needed him as much as we did that first month.

We're winning, so what do I know, but I think we have to find a way to make opponents pay more for this strategy. You can sell out on it and grab a bunch of offensive rebounds, that's basically what Utah was doing last night, and "just box out" is not always an effective counter (e.g. two or three guys can't box out three or four guys). Fastbreaking is the classic way to counter this strategy, opponent sends more guys to the glass = less guys back on defense = run on them, get some easy baskets.
