Settles made a really interesting comment during the end of the game. He said he couldn't recall any coaches, other than Cale Sanderson, who went on to have a great career after leaving Iowa State.

He meant it as a compliment. He said that coaches have such a good thing at Iowa State that they put their career at risk if they leave.

Hope Matt Campbell was listening. :)

First in-person game for me in 40 years! Soaked it all in until all players had left the floor.
Impressions:
- Players don't seem as tall when you're watching from as high up as I was! Lol
- During that 21-3 run to end the half, the defense was just stifling. Utah was overwhelmed.
- Most guys come off the bench and take a couple of possessions to feel comfortable. Curtis scores immediately!
- Tamin is so tough.
- Gotta get better at keeping opponent off the offensive board. There are teams much better at it than Utah. Houston and Auburn come to mind.
- There seem to be more designed offensive sets than in years past, to get the ball inside and to get ooen 3's. Having so many skilled options is great!

Overall, I'm sure those of you attend regularly know that crowds can be much better than last night, but it sure seemed loud and involved when the team was scuffling. I had a great time!

I heard that comment and immediately put some thought into it. Not sure why he brought up Sanderson because if you include all sports his points are not as impressive. Going back a ways, but you could look at Earle Bruce, Johnny Majors, Gable, etc.

His point is better served sticking to basketball. The only one I can think of there is the enigma of all enigmas in McDermott and one could make a case for his success being 'tainted' by being in a small conference.

Maybe they're bored? Got real competition coming next three games.

I don't buy that.

He got beat several times on back cuts etc and wasn't deflecting passes etc like usual.

And this was in the first half so I don't buy it as an elevation thing.

Maybe just a bug going through the team, nothing more.

Meh, I don't think you can really apply his comment to pre-2000ish. The industry as a whole has changed too much since then.

I agree with Settles point - in general, coaches leaving ISU haven't panned out like you'd expect. I thought for sure, Tim Floyd and Freddy would have very successful careers. Gene Chizik had a flash in the pan, but clearly failed after that.

It boils down to whether or not the coaches "had it better" after voluntarily leaving. By and large, the answer is "No".

McDermott has had some success at Creighton after leaving here. An elite 8 and a few sweet 16s.

Probably more a product of having a solid NIL with no football program to split funds with, but he's had success.

Good time for it to happen. Need full throttle next three games.

Nice to know that if you go to sleep on Tamin, he can rise up and have a big night. He's capable at any time if he stays healthy.

Our guards are 3 of the best. Add in potential big nights from any of Milan, Jackson, Jefferson, Chatfield, and Heise (all of which had off scoring games, except Jefferson) and we can be very dangerous.

It's a round about way of saying that we have multiple players that can beat you on any given night.

An opponent can pick their poison, or we can pick it for them. Either way, they're in for a long night.

There has never been a former Hawkeye who has heaped as much praise on an Iowa State team as Jess Settles did last night.

It felt naughty listening to it.
Another couple in the running:

Pete Taylor
Dan McCarney

If they can get away from the cesspool downriver from the Coralville Dam they can sometimes rid themselves of the Hok Pox.

I think we had two head coaches win Natties after they left in football.

Gable never coached at ISU AFAIK but otherwise point taken -- it's a mixed bag.

One thing is clear, the grass ain't always greener at another job.

A good win while putting forth a B type effort. Will take that any time.

Still think this team is missing something, but can't quite place what it is

Is it missing something?
Or is it more a case in which it hasn’t peaked yet?

We have room for a little growth, and likely will need it to “max out” this year.

We’re still working on getting to our standard of elite level consistency, particularly on defense.

Which is a good thing. It’s only early Jan. It’s a fine line, but we need to leave something in the tank for March. Mentally and physically

Structurally speaking, we may lack some athleticism/length, and at times outside shooting. Both would have benefited from a guy like Watson actually being a 3 and D guy, but that seems like it won’t happen

Imo our upside gets even higher if Milan can be used as the primary backup to Jefferson and an all-conference caliber mismatch at the 4

I gotta give #34, the 7 footer for Utah credit. He was really a force on defense and rebounding. No offensive game, but he's a big reason that Jackson and Chat had quiet nights. It helped Jefferson, when that guy had to sit with 4 fouls for an extended period of time.

How about this stat line for CuJo: 23 pts, 5rbs, 6 assists, 2 steals, 0 TOs. 60% shooting, 43% from 3. The team may have had a "b" game, but CuJo certainly didn't. I was surprised that CW didn't even mention Curtis' night in the CF Reaction podcast last night.

He's just so damn solid. I can't remember the last offensive player that I had this much faith in. Maybe Niang? There isn't a shot he takes you don't assume is going in. Hell, I even expected the 360 layup to fall last night.

If Milan's floor was as high as Curtis', we'd be unstoppable.
