Prohm's recruiting was... weird.

Brought in some great guys. Maybe even guys with higher-end potential than TJ has.

Future NBA guys like Shayok, THT, Wigginton, and Tyrese Haliburton mixed with... future D2 guys. Plus a big man with future NBA all-star level talent but an all-timer of a headcase with Lard.

Wild to look back on it.

The only TJ guy to have recorded an NBA minute so far is Brockington (3.4 minutes... total).

I'm not counting the guys TJ recruited as an assistant (e.g., Georges) that ended up in the NBA.
Prohm was phenomenal at his top end recruiting. Didn't he get Ja to Murray State? He was also terrible at building a roster out.

Isn't there a former Cyclone that plays for Baylor?
Jayden Nunn. Spelling might be wrong but would love to hear more about that one. He was committed to ISU/Prohm and TJ kind of shuffled him to the side when he came in. He is obviously a BIGXII player, but assuming it was a fit issue. I'm guessing no one will say anything while he is actively playing but that is one I'm curious about also.

He has an excellent eye for guards. I think the reason there were so many duds were the assistants he chose. Almost all Southern guys with ties to southern high schools. Turns out it's hard to convince kids to move halfway across the country when there are P5's close to home, so they missed on almost every P5 prospect and settled on lesser prospects.

Foster looked uninterested at the state tournament as a sophomore. It just never seemed like he loved basketball.
I've wondered about that. Since he's still at it, I assume he continues to like playing, but at some point I got a feeling it simply isn't his primary passion. (And absolutely nothing wrong with that, if true).

Have a great NCAA tournament. The kind of one that makes a fanbase fall in love with you. Be anticipated to be the face of the program and the foundation of the rebuild going forward.

TJ does nothing but talk you up. TJ recruits guys on coming to play with him.

Bail. Understandably for a lot of money.

To Texas.

Still a Big 12 school. Notice I have to qualify with the "still" part.

The Texas that just tried to hold our head under the water until the bubbles stopped.

So they try to send us to the American... and no that wasn't their immediate intent but they're not stupid they knew what their SEC move would do to the Big 12... and then start buying our players?

**** these guys. And **** him. I'm glad Gabe abused him.

The fact he was going to go and play for a wife-beating ******* didn't help.

I didn't mind the decision. Had he gone to Tennessee or something where we'd never see him again I'd have forgotten about him. It was just business. Even Kansas I would have hated but KU hasn't tried to snuff us with a pillow so they can make a few more bucks. But going to Texas... made it personal.
During the 2023 NCAA tournament, Texas ended up Des Moines the first two rounds. The boos for Hunter were glorious.

I think he just likes the status of it. The lifestyle and the perks etc. As I mentioned above, over 4 seasons, he has about one season accumulated of actual games played.

I was there, we got to see Kansas choke and Tyrese airball 3s, it was glorious.
Yes, and the Arkansas coach Eric Musselman (I guess he's at USC now) ripped off his shirt after beating Kansas.

Howard University played KU in round 1, the band was amazing and Kamala Harris was in the house (Howard Alum).

I've been all three years it came to Des Moines and 2023 was the best by far. 2016 was fun because all the blue bloods were there in KU, UCONN, Kentucky, Indiana. Indiana taking down Kentucky in the 2nd round was fun because who doesn't want to see Calipari lose.

2019 was only okay, highlight was Minnesota and the ton of Gopher fans get fired up in the first round, otherwise games were kinda boring and chalky.

It is strange. In this NIL era it seems like even though Iowa State can pay guys now that they are somehow even less likely to get top end guys. It could be too, that what we're seeing with TJ guys not being NBA guys is due to the style we play, or more aptly have had to play so far digging out of the hole Prohm dug us. I hope it's the latter.

I didn't go in 2016 but it would have been awesome to see all the blue bloods.

2019 was my first time. I specifically remember Gabe Kalscheur going off against Louisiville, but the rest of the games were pretty unremarkable.

2023 started off pretty uneventful also unil the Arkansas-Kansas game that night. I forgot about Musselman and wasn't Bill Self off in medical leave or something?

No insider info here.

Feels to me our limited NIL resources are the main factor, though.

Notice TJ once was bringing in former P6 starters (e.g., Brockington and Kalscheur) to start for the Cyclones but now has to play Moneyball with guys from the Mountain West and the MAC. Hoiberg landed a former 5* recruit with Royce White... TJ is making due with guys from UNC-Charlotte and Seattle.

So we're the same Iowa State we always were... gotta rely on development, being more than the sum of our parts, and finding diamonds in the rough if we're going to be competitive.

Good news is TJ is really good at all three of these things.

That’s a really nice season for Hamilton as a RS Freshman. Would have been nice to have him for next year after losing Keshon and Cujo

I always want ISU to use a bulk of its NIL on retention rather than acquisition. In all sports, but especially basketball.

I would take a Demarion Watson 10/10 times over a high priced transfer like Hunter Dickinson, Caleb Love, AJ Storr

Prentiss Nixon would like a word with you.

Prohm had zero idea what he was doing, and the recruiting results were just a random number generator. But even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.

I think some of the freshmen recruits (like Momcilovic and maybe some of the incoming guys) will be more likely to get to the NBA than our transfer recruits when we're not going to shell out the big bucks for the level of transfer that is on the NBA radar already.

That’s either hyperbole or bad money ball.

Obviously we’d buy several solid prospects over swinging big on one prospect

I think the harder question is on retaining our fringe stars. They’ll get big offers from wealthy programs willing to overpay. Or from programs that are willing to put all their chips on a single player.

Say to retain Milan, Lipsey, Jefferson, we need to use so much of our funds that we can’t fill other needs. Do we let one go?

There is certainty and continuity in retaining guys, but I think if trading were a possible, we’d probably do that on at least one

For example, paying someone at a go-to scorer price when thus far he is a 3 and D wing, but with limited defense and poor rebounding, is not money ball.

You can replace 11 points per game (and the space it provides) from a sharpshooter that’s a weak point on defense and rebounding at a modest price. With the savings, add a wing that gets you points with defense and rebounding.

But given the potential the returning player improves and becomes a go-to scorer, if he’s closer to a 3 and D price, you overpay to some degree to retain
