In looking at the box scores of all their Q1 games one thing that stands out is points in the paint. When they have the edge there, they usually do pretty well. If we make them shoot over the top of us, not get a lot of run outs, and we’re able to get it to the rim for buckets I like our chances a lot.

Here's a breakdown of their 7 players that play 20+minutes per game:

PG: Sean Pedulla (#3) 6'1" Senior - played 3 years at Virginia Tech - including playing ISU last year in the Nov tourney (17 pts, 5-7 3FG, 6 asts, 5 TOs). Leads them in pts and assists, makes the team go. Has made almost as many 3s this year as Curtis has. I think he's similar to Lipsey, not as good on defense, better outside shot.

SG: Jaylen Murray (#5) 5'11" Senior - played 2 years at St Peters, second year at Miss. Similar stats as Pedulla, not quite as many 3s per game.

SF: Matthew Murrell (#11) 6'4" Senior+ - fifth year at Miss, will be his 152nd game. Thick, strong off guard. Leading scorer the last 3 seasons, but the 4th option this year. Shot almost 40% last year from 3, under 30% this year. All three guards shoot 80% from the FT line.

PF: Dre Davis (#14) 6'5" Senior+ - played 2 years at Louisville, then 2 at Seton Hall. Not really a forward, but is big and strong at 220#. Can shoot a bit (34%) and is their best offensive rebounder. Will be a fascinating matchup with Jefferson.

C: Malik Dia (#0) 6'9" Junior - played 1 season at Vanderbilt, then 1 at Belmont. Big, strong post. Can step out and shoot, making 1 3FG per game (33%). Really their only post presence. Plays about 20min per game, can get into foul trouble.

6th man: Jaemyn Brakefield (#4) 6'8" Senior+ - 4th year at Miss after playing freshman year at Duke. Started last 3 years, then became 6th man this year - plays 23 minutes a game. Second leading scorer, 3rd in assists and rebounds. Not really a post, gives them a 5-out look when Dia goes out.

7th man: Devon Barnes (#7) 6'5" Senior - 2 years at Texas Southern, 1 at Sam Houston. Plays 20 min per game, averages 5pts & 3rb. Shooting only 21% from 3. Another strong, athletic piece that mainly plays defense.

Pedulla leads them in scoring at 15ppg, then the next 5 guys are between 10-11ppg. Very very balanced.

I’d like to think our defense will show up, although Lipsey’s injury is a factor

Assuming it’s an ugly kind of game, we’ll need Milan to overcome their physicality and have a great game. Sort of a preview of next year

With the switch everything defense, that was the calling card of Beard and Mark Andrews in their time at Texas Tech. They typically played bigger, more physical guards and smaller, more athletic forwards. That resulted in five guys on the court at all times 6'6" - 6'8" who were all extremely physical players.

Ill be curious how that works with smaller guards. Id imagine if Beard was being honest he'd admit they dont currently have the personnel required to most effectively run that defense. I would think we regularly initiate our offense with Momcilovic or Jefferson screening Lipseys man and then posting up the smaller defender on the high block or elbow. Will be a fascinating chess match. Get their point guard matched up on Jefferson early and often see if we cant get him a couple early fouls.

Jeffersons passing ability, strength and guard like skills likely to cause them some serious headaches. I cant imagine theyve seen many players with a similar skill set all year.

This is a good matchup for us with Momcilovic and Jefferson. If one or both are playing well tomorrow offensively we win this one (assuming our regular defensive performance)
