Why did the Big 12 let Microsoft butcher their marketing with AI slop?

It's definitely not ideal or powerful for this kind of image generation compared to many other options and what we'll see in just a few months, but the bar right now is if it will happily go full Nazi within a few minutes of discussion so it far surpasses the work of other massive companies in some respects.

Grok also told me step by step how AI will eliminate humans as they are inefficient

It was cool.

You won't find a bigger ANTI Microsoft person than me. I've faced their crap for over 40 years. However, I can say their affiliation with OpenAI is reaping success. I'm currently involved in a DIY graphics project and over the 30 AI engines I've used to try and create what I want, so far nothing comes close to ChatGPT. I realize, however, 'tastes' can be different. That said, expect the following scenario: Microsoft becomes majority owner of OpenAI, and they proceed to love it to death like every other thing they've stuck their fingers in to.

In isolation, does this small project that will be forgotten really matter at all?

No.

Has this ruined my entire summer?

Yes.

From a macro perspective, AI is a net negative right now. (Many reasons, but that's a separate thread.) I feel the same about sports leagues being completely consumed by gambling, private equity buying teams or leagues (LIV), etc. All of these issues are obvs about $$$$$$. I get it.

Should we accept it though?

If a person becomes licensed with a school to sell products with logos, etc. they have to adhere to strict brand standards, some which can seem absolutely absurd, in order to maintain a certain level of quality and prevent reputational harm.

The gold standard for ISU is Jack Trice's story, something that shouldn't be mocked or belittled or diminished in any way, right? If an ISU licensee tried to sell a poster of Jack Trice Stadium that honors someone who died playing for the school, would it be acceptable to have it named

JACE IIIBCIGMANIA

along with a deformed I STATE logo at midfield?

Yes, some companies use AI to generate a chunk of a project, but have an actual human involved to fix or add things. If a business is asking me for attention and money while serving up slop, why should I care if they don't care?

It's like Matt Campbell said this week - ISU's best players gave up money to come back to Ames. Why? Because they care. Because ISU football/AD is full of excellent leaders who change people's lives. Because ISU fans are fantastic. Because it means something. They care, so I care.

Look at this Kansas image. How is KU's brand elevated by an image that shows deformed and dead jayhawks? Plus the video board probably needs to be censored.

Should we accept it? There's no choice. Well besides revolt but we all know that this country is never going get off their addiction to dopamine via social media, TV and consumerism.

I don't know what stadium they were aiming for, but that ain't Jack Trice...unless you're in the middle of a hallucinogenic fog.
I think "hallucinogenic fog" is exactly what they were going for.

My hunch is the prompt was something like "design a stadium for the Iowa State Cyclones" and left it at that. These don't look like they were given much guidance.

Holy effing **** guy, I assure you it's not that deep. Nobody is degrading Jack's honor by posting a friggin AI image that has some jumbled up text, FFS.

Regret to inform you that I'm engaging in a bit of hyperbole here. This has actually NOT ruined my entire summer and did say that this small project that will be forgotten doesn't actually matter.

When something can teach itself and learn exponentially faster than a human I’m not sure “tool” is an adequate description.

We don’t call a modern computer a calculator. We don’t call a motorcycle a bicycle. We don’t call an encyclopedia a brochure.

The interesting and terrifying thing about AI is that it is probably the only tech I can think of in modern history that has the widest range of future outcomes. As of right now, some of them are really just LLM. It's definitely a net negative on society right now. That could change in the future. I could write a whole dissertation on this.

From a visual standpoint, I'm interested to see what happens with Disney and Midjourney.

AI has revealed higher education as currently constructed is a bit of a joke. Being able to burp out a generic academic paper lays bare that many students view college as a mere transaction and for the absurd amount of money it costs, they better get that degree regardless of effort or actual learning.

This is literally insane.

Haha. Internet is Tuff business. I"m welcome with Glendower banner, plus Jerry says hello. Have you responded ot him?

I’m assuming graphic designer and artist types are saying they could do a better job, which is true. But it’s also true they aren’t giving money to the Big 12 to market their product. The purpose of this isn’t to give fans or the schools the best art possible, it is to make money for conference members that desperately need it to compete.

Can you imagine if a good ol' human "graphic designer and artist type" was contracted to create the Big 12 Conference's design work, then submitted a bunch of graphics with nonsensical jibberish and misspelled the names of the member schools and cities?

They'd be laughed at mercilessly and ghosted. Even if they were doing the work pro bono.

Meanwhile, large amounts of $$ exchanged hands to promote cutting-edge AI technology, and the Big 12 gets this. Hilariously bad.

This is 100000% right.

The artist might even get fined or sued based on the terms of the contract. That was my point with my hyperbolic example about Jack's honor and college sports licensing. What are the standards?

One more thing about AI from a creative perspective is that I think it's absolutely a valid use case for brainstorming or sparking new directions or ways of thinking. At some point there needs to be a human involved and these Big 12 images were not that.

Some of the stadium slop images bring up cool ideas. For example, I would love to see an actual artist use their talent to take the OSU stadium wild west imagery and create something valid out of that.

Maybe there a photographer in 1887 that made a mistake in the field with his glass negative emulsion, but the resulting distorted image (using the innovative chemical tech) sparked an idea for an innovative way of creating images or presenting a creative viewpoint.

So, all XP and FGs will be kicked at one end? That's gonna extend game time even further.

I kinda like Oklahoma State rendering. That immediately will become the coolest stadium in D-1.

And all the fans are wearing cowboy hats! What commitment.

To me, these are just for fun and soon will be lost to memory. The OSU graphic is really just downright blatant fun!
