If you guys get really desperate for TR, let me know and perhaps we can come to an arrangement.

My wife got me a bottle for Xmas and it re-affirmed the fact that I'm not a whiskey drinker.

My family used to get it when it was illegal. My Dad's side lives in Carroll which is real close to templeton.

I'm from Carroll and grew up in Halbur for a few years so maybe thats why I think its just overpriced. The illegal stuff is still readily available. I 'know' someone who purchased about 20 bottles of it a year and a half ago for their 'business'. The only markings on the glass was a cheap printed sticker that said: "Greetings from Templeton" on it.
I know that it was purchased for much less than the commercial rye. I have drank plenty of both to know that its good but I also know that the illegal stuff is cheaper than the store sold version.

Good grief, you're going to get trampled by these TR guys looking for this "discount" brand with comments like that!

Yes, to me, those are cost added values to alcohol that can warrant a price that its set at. When its possibly easier to manufacture, isn't held to government standards, aged longer, shipped overseas, then I can see the reasoning behind that price its at.

Government standards don't always make it better. I've tasted some real **** scotches in my day. Aging is important, but once you've established yourself, it doesn't have the bearing on cost as it did say the first 12 years of operation. Most 12 year old scotch within a few dolalrs of the price range as TR aren't that great and I would put most of them below the body, character and smoothness of that of Templeton Rye. Although it is tough to compare as scotch is a completely different animal from Rye Whiskey. Quality and care can make up for a lot in a whiskey.

Although I will throw out there, as a cost added item. The fact that most American whiskeys use new oak barrels. I know a lot of European distillers use used oak barrels. A lot of them are actually purchased from American Distilleries since they can only use them once. Which actually leads me to another favorite whiskey of mine. the Jameson 12 year old Special Reserve. It's aged in old Cherry Casks. Gives the whiskey some really nice undertones.

Anyways, I think it's pretty simple to explain the cost of TR. It's the fact that it is a craft distillery. It just costs more if you aren't in the Mass production Market. Last I knew, it was only sold in Iowa and Illinois. That's not a huge market compared to The Glenlivit. My main brand used to be Makers Mark. I found it back in the early 90s and really drank a lot of it. It has sense expanded. Originally only being able to find it in a few bars or restaurants, it's everywhere now. And to be quite honest, it just doesn't taste the same anymoe, since they expanded production. Maybe it's because I know it's expanded and I'm a whiskey snob, or maybe it's that with mass production that you lose some of the craft that goes into it.

I have drank a lot of whiskeys in my day. Templeton Rye is up right up there with the few that struck me as something special the first time it hit my tongue.

My list of overpriced booze

Dom Perignon- Buy a bottle of Andre and try to hack up a little byle into the bottom of the glass before you pour, the taste is so close

Grey Goose- is no better than Smirnoff, and more than double the price. For martinis they're are many better, cheaper vodkas like Ketel One, Stoli and Voxx

Absolute- worse than Smirnoff but the same price as Stoli, only popular because of constant advertising. The Bud light of vodkas.

Bud Light and Rolling Rock- both crap, shouldn't drink these unless you're a teenager/ college kid who doesn't like the taste of beer but wants to get drunk. If that's the case just buy 40oz of Mickeys or OE save some money and get drunk faster, or just buy PBR, Old Style or Coors for better flavor and similar price.

Jose Cuervo- this tequila is garbage and no one seems to know it until you drink the good stuff. Patron is expensive but drink it at least once to know how good tequila can be, then go get Sauza silver for a decent tasting affordable alternative.

I pretty much agree with everything you just said. +1

I also am curious. Is there some serious validity to this? It seems like it would be a bad business model to expand so much that you'd run out and go through a 3 year stretch of not having any. Some will wait it out, but others will look at different brands...

Again, I have spoke face to face with two liquor dept. heads of two different stores, both of whom I trust. Outside of a written statement from the distillery, I don't know what more I can do.

It just seems like they are continuing to try to expand. I know someone who travelled to India, met the wife of the owner, who was having meetings in India about distilleries there. I also think there was some Whiskyfest in Chicago that Templeton went to.

Not saying you are wrong, but it seems very much like a company looking to continue to expand, which would be silly if they couldn't produce anything for 3+ years.

I couldn't agree more. My regular vodka is Stoli (when I drink vodka), and for cheap stuff Smirnoff works just fine.

Jose is crap tequila too, although the "good" Jose isn't too horrible. Real agave tequila is amazingly good.

Or, it could be an amazing marketing tool...

Take a look at Westvleteren 12. I highly doubt it's THAT good of a beer. I mean, I'm sure it's amazingly good - probably in the top 25-50 beers in the world - but I suspect a large part of it's extremely high ratings has something to do with the scarcity of it. It's legendary in the US in large part due to the fact that it's not available here.

I prefer Cazadores as my tequila of choice. It's decent to sip and makes a killer margarita. It's a few dollars more than Sauza, but much less than Patron. I would actually go with Cazadores even in Patron were available for a cheaper price.

Sales have exceeded supply. A drought is now occurring. Find it, hold it, for it could be 3 years until you see more of it.

I have 2 bottles. I want more.

They don't have unlimited supply at this time but they are not out of product. They will still supply the state with the same amount per month that they have been sending. I think they are about 3 years away (aging) from having a large supply available. I should still be available.
