I assume the esim will generate a new phone number while using it?
No, most phones now allow for dual-sim usage and and e-sim will work in conjunction wit the sim card already in your phone. Just get one from one of the bigger companies in Ireland like Vodafone or Airalo. We were just in Scotland last September and you can buy the e-sim while in the US and finish setting up when you land in Ireland.

Has anyone been and golfed Ireland? If so, I’m wondering out if these courses, which might be the best one:

- Old Head (this is the only one I’ve heard of before, and it looks awesome)
- Waterville
- Dooks
- Ballybunion
- The Island
I have played there. The only course you listed I didn’t play was The Island.

Old Head is near the town of Kinsale. There are units there at the course you can stay in or of course go into Kinsake. Old Head is off the charts. I could send you photos of all the courses. Dooks was my least favorite but not bad. The are all on the water with gorgeous views.

Message me with your email address and I can send a few photos if you wish. It’s certainly worth the effort to get there and play. Good luck to you

Take a night after golf and stroll around Kinsale. There are some great restaurants that serve really good seafood. Cool town I think

I’ve mostly golfed in the North.
Fabulous Courses (but it’s like that all over the island).

The European Club is just about an hour south of Dublin (if you don’t pub crawl) and is quite a Gem. Lightly played and can get tee times.

Justin Thomas, Jordan Spieth, Smylie Kaufman played there after The Open in 2024. They loved it.

Highly recommended

I like to think of the e-sim as data only. If you think you are going to be calling a lot from Ireland, it might make more sense to do the daily or monthly international plan from your cell company. But if you are just looking for data and don't need to make phone calls, then an e-sim can work really well.

First check to see if your plan has some data built in already (My T-Mobile plan has unlimited overseas data with the first 15GB being high speed)

Check to see if your phone supports e-sim (most phones bought in the US since 2021 have it but verify)
On an iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and look for an IMEI number in the Digital SIM section. On Android phones, go to Settings > About > Status info (the steps may differ depending on your phone) and look for an EID.

If you don't have an esim capable phone, I'd recommend getting a SIM when you land and just shop around in whatever area of the airport. Go with a big provider like Vodaphone, Orange, Virgin, DeutscheTelekom (T-Mobile). They all will have similar plans for similar costs.

If it does, get the airalo, or holafly esim app. Airalo I use the most but holafly is simple and always unlimited data and you just pick how many days you want it. Both offer country specific esims and regional esims. Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales are generally lumped into the UK esim country for reference. Airalo has 10 days of unlimited data in Europe (42 countries) for $35.

Call back home using an app like facebook messenger or whats app or whatever as these plans don't have calling ability.

So my iPhone shows an EID, IMEI, ICCID, MEID, and IMEI2. The IMEI, ICCID, and MEID are under “physical sim” and the IMEI2 are under “available sim”. T-Mobile, iPhone 12, will be going to Ireland, UK (London), and two continental EU countries. Just want text and data. Will have my wifi-only iPad as well.

Am I all set? I’m not a good millennial o_O

You have the ability to esim so you're good there. I would recommend the Europe unlimited plan for $35 on airalo, 5GB is $20 and 10GB is $37 so might as well go unlimited. iPhone 12 is unique in that you can only have 1 physical SIM active and 1 esim active. But in your scenario I don't forsee an issue.

Texting is a little tricky with iPhones in particular. Are you actually texting people or are you using imessage? Easy way to check is do the people you wanna text have green bubbles when you chat with them or blue? If they're blue, you just need data. If they're green you're gonna need to keep your US sim active (or use an app to message to folks) to be able to text.

Now you mentioned TMobile which has most plans that include international texting (IE you can text US numbers without fees but texting to international numbers cost money) so I would verify your plan to make sure.

Then you can dual sim and have the esim for your data and still be able to text from your US phone number no problem. You'll need to select your primary phone number as the voice line and your esim as the data line.

@jsb is right. Think of an esim that you buy from airalo or similar service as data only. There is technically a phone number attached but you'll never know what it is without heavy digging and it won't even work anyway.

If you must call and you can't use an app like Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp or whatever to call that person, then you'll need to buy an international day/month plan with your service provider.

wasn't sure how tough/petty the EU is being these days for visitors from the states. I have an EU residence permit, so less of an issue for me.
EU will begin their entry exit system system in October of this year, so everyone going to the game only (or hopping on over to non UK countries) should be fine with just a US passport. UK started theirs this January so anyone going there will need the ETA.

100% will be fine flying into Ireland for this game without an ETA. Providing you don’t connect in UK.

Pay attention to what this guy said. Last year, we had an event in Europe, and lots of people who connected through London had problems there with immigration.

On the phone stuff, use an ESim. You can also walk into a 3 store or Vodaphone store and get a short term physical SIM card if you prefer. You will definitely use the data more than the number. Lots of people use WhatsApp over there. You can make calls and texts through WhatsApp.

Some carriers like Verizon have an international plan. My wife got 10 days included just as part of her plan. Seamless service.

For those flying home through Dublin, you’ll go through US customs in the airport there. Give yourself a little extra time.
