It’s hardly going to put a dent in that deficit, especially when you look at start up overhead and other overhead.
Neither will most donations….but as we’ve been told, it all adds up.

Sell beer. It generates some revenue and is better optics when groveling for donations (of the amount that also don’t put a dent).

Testifying
I don’t understand the “anyone who wants to sell beer in the stadium is automatically a raging alcoholic” stance.

Some people just want to have a beer while watching the game. You know, the same thing you can do at any other sporting event in America.
I've evolved into 1-2 quality beers (or drinks) as kind of my norm in life. And I'm slowly moving away from that and preferring a Climbing Kites on ice any time the weather is nice.
Only time I really have a cheapo beer is if I get done mowing and wanna have a Coors or Busch and sit on the front porch after.

You sure about that? I was under the impression that the soon to be departing President was the main obstacle. I don't know if she may have a big money donor in her ear.

I am not against JTS beer sales as long they exclusively sell Ames Lager at a high price to make it worthwhile for West O as well and have 4 separate kiosks for it in each corner of the concourse.
Agree, if they sell beer make it Ames Lager and separate it from the other concessions. Don’t need it backing everything up.

Then go somewhere where they serve alcohol during games. ISU doesn't. Nobody is being holier than thou. Maybe we've just been around drunks too much where "a drink or two" turns into five or six and decorum and your balance fly out the window and you go stumbling around making a nuisance of yourself. Hardly anyone stops at one or two drinks. The purpose of alcohol is to get tipsy. Otherwise, you'd just be drinking soda pop. So don't tell me you stop at one or two. I'm not buying it.
Now I am starting to think you or the people around you need to get checked into that clinic you mention earlier.

Literally everyone I know l, myself included, can stop at one or two or not have one at all if they don’t feel like it in that moment.

Screen name checks out.

Also, do you ever go to a restaurant that serves alcohol? Is everyone falling down drunk and tipsy?

I am going to post this every time this discussion comes up. Keep the SEZ as is with all its options and sell Ames Lager throughout the stadium. Keeps your premium seating and then you get to double dip as you make money from West O and from the sales in the stadium. Can have lots of smaller quick options separate from the main concessions (see literally any other modern stadium with the walk up coolers, grab your beer, and quickly get carded/pay). Also yes, the entire concessions needs upgraded. Better staffing and food we are way behind the times.

I’m pro-selling alcohol inside the stadium. But this thread needs to die because it isn’t going to happen while Pollard is AD.
If attendance starts to drop I think it would happen but otherwise probably not. I don’t particularly care one way or the other but I’d be lying if I said I didn’t sort of enjoy how upset it makes some people that we don’t. If we eventually do I’ll probably feel the same way about how it upsets people that didn’t want it so kind of a win win I guess.

Why does JP allow drinking in the tailgating lots then? And why does he allow fans to leave at halftime and go slam more beer or do shots??

Those two things would be responsible for probably like 95% of the drunkenness on gameday even if we sold $12 tall boys of We Will lager in the stadium.

If JP says the reason for not doing it is because of drunkenness…. he’s being hypocritical. I sure hope he’s consistent then and tells any brewery/restaurant/bar located in CyTown that they will NOT be allowed to sell any alcohol on days of ISU athletic events. Because…. you know…. some people might get drunk.

See how stupid JP looks on this issue yet??

And don’t give me this…. it doesn’t make enough money BS either. So does Joe Blow’s $500 yearly donation he makes to ISU athletics not make any difference either? Should JP be telling people that if they don’t donate thousands or millions of dollars…. it just doesn’t matter? Or does everything help?? I’m confused.

Is a small profit better than no profit? Asking for a friend.
My boss tried to give me a bonus that would have covered ~5% of my recent hospital bill, but I said “Absolutely not!! No monies is better than a few monies!”

This is a terrible mindset to have. “Sorry Chevron, we aren’t going to sell you that extra sponsorship because it’s really not that much money and won’t help singularly solve our deficit problem.”

Iowa brought in around $4 million in alcohol sales, North Carolina around $5 million. Even if 1/3 of that stays with the university, that’s meaningful towards closing a $20 million gap.

If not selling alcohol was about not bringing in enough money…we should all know that would be Pollard’s response. Not some dumb “fans are slobs” reasoning.

This might be one of the silliest things I've ever read on this board. There is no evidence to suggest in any measurable way that selling beer in JT would result in "more drunks" in or around the stadium - at any point on game day. Your take is absolutely a "holier than thou" take, and there is no other reasonable way to describe it.

Selling beer in JT is a no brainer, as it will factually generate revenue and anecdotally has the very clear potential - based on hundreds of other sporting venues/stadiums - to positively impact the game/fan experience, especially when paired with preventing people from leaving at halftime. "Not selling beer" is very obviously political and/or personal within leaders at Iowa State. And for the "I trust JP!" crowd, friendly reminder that you are free to not be forced to worship and agree with every one of his takes/opinions/decisions. He is not a king and doesn't require (nor deserve) blind loyalty. Save that sh*t for politicians (insert sarcasm here). Even leaders with extensive backgrounds in finance and accounting do things that are not in the best interests of finance and accounting.

If the goal is to make money, and it is, having one option of one craft beer at a premium price is about the worst possible way I can think to go about it....
