Why does everyone assume if TCU is in the top 16, they are BCS bound? That just makes them eligible, right? They still would have to get voted in over KSU, correct? Just asking.
If a team from a non-AQ conference finishes in the top 16 they get in I believe. Only the best team from a non-AQ though.
Not quite - otherwise Boise St would be a lock for the BCS, and they're not.
A non-BCS school picks up an auto-qualifying bid to a BCS bowl if the following things happen:
1. Win their conference championship
2a. Finish in the top 14 of the final BCS standings
-OR-
2b. Finish in the top 16 of the final BCS standings and ahead of at least one other BCS conference champion in the final BCS standings.
Here's why TCU is such a fly in the ointment right now:
1. They are the MWC champions (a non-auto qualifying league)
2a. Not a factor
2b. Huge factor, considering they're definitely going to finish ahead of West Virginia (the Big East champion) and will likely finish ahead of Clemson (the ACC champion) for good measure. The only question remaining is whether TCU is able to sneak into the top 16. If they do, they're going to a BCS bowl.
